The fuel filler neck that goes to the tail panel. What screws did you use or did you attach it with bolts? Also on the RS the gas cap has a cable that attaches to the tail body..did you attach the cap and how did it work out? Also at the base of the fuel neck inside the trunk how did you mount the plate that goes together with the trunk floor.... any photos? what did GM do back in the day. I checked some of the parts catalogs and nobody sells the screw attachments for the neck to body or the plate to the trunk pan...

just curious.:)

I just installed a new RS gas cap the other day and I'm of two minds about the cable. On the one hand you'll never lose your cap but on the other, while you are refilling the cap sits on the bumper and the cable will scratch the paint around the filler pipe. I'm using the gas cap from Rick's. I don't think you'd have any trouble running the cap without the cable but you'd have to cut it off.

I can get you a photo of the screws tonight after I get home, unless some one else has one handy.

Thanks for the quick reply. I am leaning towards not using the cable attachment because of the chance of scratching the paint. If you have a photo of the rear tail pan with the filer neck screws i would appreciate it. A picture is worth a thousand words. I could probably just use some sheet metal screws.

Brandon,
Origionally they were hex head sheetmetal screws. I have a cable on my cap and have never scratched my paint in 14k miles. My car's asleep, can't get you pics now.

Thanks Scott, if you have a photo it might help. The cable on the cap is just attached to one of the the screws right? (bottom left out of the four?) When you fill it I would imagine that the cap just hangs.... carefully I might add..... just regular hex head sheet metal screws?

Here is a good thread with pictures of original, late NOS and repo caps.
Originals had the rivets and later produced NOS and repo had screws in the cap. Both of the cables are attached with a bolt as seen in the pictures.

Thanks Vince, I kind of wondered where that old thread went.;) I have seen that thread earlier as well and when I went out to check which cap I had it was a GM replacement cap(no rivets, just screws). :(

I was more curious about attaching the filler neck to the rear tail pan sheetmetal. The AIM doesn't really give any indepth guidance as to how to do it correctly but I could be missing that as well. ( I know it is real simple, but I want to get it right the first time with the proper hardware)....

I guess it all kind of all goes together though with the cap and all.

details details:D

Tom, I don't think that I could ask for any better pictures.:) Those pics answer my question 100%. Thank you for taking the time to take the photos and than post them here on the site. Scott said earlier that they were hex screws so I went out this afternoon and picked up some #8 and #10 stainless steel machine screws at Lowes. I lined up the neck and the rubber boot and all I need to do is screw in the screws.

I looked all over for photos of the filler neck to get it right and the closest thing I came up with were some early production photos on the assembly line back in '67 but they were to far to tell how the neck was attached properly.

My dilemma now is whether or not I attach the cable to the tail pan. To be correct and so that no one runs off with the cap I should attach it but my gut feeling is to cut it off so that I don't inadvertenly scratch the paint. I will probably do what GM did because I am trying to get the car back to that way it was in 1967. I will just have to be careful when I fill it up every ten miles.:D

thanks Tom:beers:

I would worry about someone stealing the gas cap without the cable.

Why don't you try to wrap the part of cable with 3M's stone gaurd #84904. I'm sure you'll find a few more places on the car to use this stuff as well.

Glad I could help!

I thought about coating the cable as suggested by Hatman above but the coating will have to be extremely thin because when you turn the cap the cable slides through its mount also.

My car was missing the cable for the last 20 years. I may just run without it. The car's never really out of my sight so I'm not worried about the cap walking off.
