I had bought a 406 and am getting ready to install when I go to put on balancer I find pulley bolt holes stripped and the area where pulley mounts on balancer all screwed up. the guy who built this engine is basically screwing me so I was wondering my alternatives. It is supposedly balanced to the rotating assembly. this engine is just ready to install untill this problem. do I have to remachine and helicoil this one or how do I go about replacing if it is balanced. thank you Allen young

First, before you get too excited, check and see if a bottoming tap can't be run down into the bottom of the tapped hole and see if it works then..

Usually the tapered puller end just buggers up the first several threads as you pull against it instead of a bolt head with a centering hole!!!

Been there, done that... Good luck... pdq67

actually of the three bolt holes for the pulley only one actually lets the bolt thread in then one allows the bolt to thread but keeps spinning and the last the bolt just falls in thehole. the center where the pulley countersinks in has been hit atleast 2 times with a hammer and needs to be put in a lathe to have the counterbore re turned

Heck, get a cat. from Northern Automotive Parts and pick up a stock type new one for not all that much money and be done with it!!

I was going to say go to a Bone-yar --, er, Recyclers Yard and get a good used stock one, but then realized that you probably can't find one unless you get on their parts "Watts-line" network and order a good used one through them.

I bought a stock bb damper from Lunati's as well as a 454 aftermarket, stock type 454 flywheel from a Recyclers Yard and have been happy with both... pdq67

Thanks for your reply. the reason i posted is because this is on a 400 which is externaly balanced and was balanced to this rotating assembly. I wouldnt have a problem buying a new one but i was afraid it would have to be balanced exactly as the other one.

Usually the balancer and the flywheel/flex plate are left alone and the crank is balanced to them.

But you might ask around and double check... pdq67
