View Full Version : was the '69 built around the kick panels?
seeburg220 Mar 27th, 09, 01:38 PM I cannot for the life of me, get the passenger kick panel to come out! It's completely loose, the glove box is out. It's hanging up inside the body on the plastic extension piece. It's a non-ac car. I have spent 30 minutes trying to wiggle it out, but don't want to break it. Any suggestions? This appears to be the first piece on the assembly line, that all other pieces were attached to...

LOL! I hear ya man..... we've all been through it.
It will come out if you keep pulling. Try getting an edge to stick out of the hole and then 'twist' it back and forth. Or get a wide-bladed putty knife behind and edge an work it out that way.
rad454 Mar 27th, 09, 01:47 PM Check this out. One of the best threads here. It will save me a lot of time when I go to put my 69 back together.

seeburg220 Mar 27th, 09, 01:49 PM Thanks Joe! That did the trick. I ended up pushing up from the bottom of the extension piece, while twisting it out. Whew! :beers:

Thanks Rad, I'll bookmark that one!
SPARKY69 Mar 27th, 09, 02:26 PM been there!!! rough one, im saving the thread too!!
sick67 Mar 27th, 09, 06:53 PM I would have broke it in half then glued it back together but thats just the way I do things since I have such a short temper
john68 Mar 27th, 09, 07:00 PM Parts are made for ease of assembly, not for removal. Ask any flat rate mechanic, the
parts clip in are not made for removeability
Richard Cranium Mar 28th, 09, 03:20 PM I definitely laughed when I found this thread via Google a minute ago. Low and behold, it was just posted yesterday too.
I am replacing these kick panels on my father's '69 Z right now. I've got some new replacement kick panels.....and figured they'd be a matter of taking out a few screws. Boy was I wrong! This might be one of the hard interior panels I've removed......and I've been a flat rate tech for 12 years now. :o
I managed to get the passenger side out. It put up a hell of a fight......but I won. The drivers side looks as if it is not going to cooperate as easily. It appears the parking brake assembly will need to be removed to get the drivers side kick panel out. Am I right? Anyone know?
:beers:
NHBandit Mar 28th, 09, 04:22 PM Parking brake assembly definately has to come out and it's still not easy even with that out of the way.

I figured as much. l:) Anyone know how many fasteners hold up the parking brake assembly? I can clearly see one bolt at the front.....just didn't have time to check the rear of the assembly.

Two nuts on the firewall and one bolt under dash. I just finished stripping ALL the guts from my dash to get the sand out and put some second skin in. I will be putting the kickpanels and defrost ducts in first! :)
Mkelcy Mar 28th, 09, 08:35 PM Reading the title of this thread, I saw an image of two kick panels travelling down the very start of the assembly line, about 5 feet apart. :D

Two guys holding them in mid-air, while other workers start welding-in the body around it! :D
Richard Cranium Apr 16th, 09, 06:01 PM I won the battle on the passenger side, got the kick panel in and perfect without having to remove the heater box or anything else. I've gotten the drivers side in place and screwed in......but I am currently losing the battle with the one bolt on the interior that holds the parking brake assembly in. :p
I'll try to get some pics up tonight.
Richard Cranium Apr 16th, 09, 08:27 PM Here are the old crusty kickers I took out.

Here is the passenger side, almost done. Sorry for the messy carpet......once I get the package tray in and the seats back in, it is going to get completely detailed. :beers:

RickD Apr 17th, 09, 04:27 AM When I put mine back in I trimmed about 1/8" off around the lip. I though the Red Cross would use these to get blood donations when I got done!
KevinW Apr 17th, 09, 04:45 AM Dont forget to put the wiring behind the drivers side first! :)
Dale8346 Apr 17th, 09, 06:00 AM Kevin,
It is a really good idea to put the (speaker) wiring behind BOTH the drivers side and the passenger side first. It can be done after the fact, but is definitely a time saver if you have it run in advance or already attached so you don't have to do it later.
The wiring for the courtesy lights are much easier if you attach them before you install the kick panels. In that same regard, if you are replacing the tail light harness, do that FIRST before you install the Drivers Kick Panel.
HwyStarJoe Apr 17th, 09, 09:35 AM Those are your 1969 kick panels?
They look different than mine. The vents on mine are removable plates that snap into the kick panel, and the mounting screws are behind them. Also there is pinch weld molding that's part of the panel that extends about 12" up along the door opening.

Talking to me? If so, yes. Not sure if the ones I took out were OEM or not. The OER's I put in were almost 100% identical to the ones I removed though.

Those look great! Where did you get your speakers? I have some in now, but they didn't come wth grilles, so I want to replace them with some that have grilles. Thanks
