I've got a mix of stock pulleys that came with the engine I bought for my build. My question is how good/safe are stock pulleys in a drag race application? If not, are a set of aluminum pulleys from Summit a good substitute?
I've read some posts on belts being thrown type problems. But nothing on pulleys handling higher rpm's. In my Ricks catalog there is a disclaimer in the pulley section about running the stock pulleys at high rpm's.

Do you plan on Drag racing a lot ? By a mix of pulley's what do you mean ? There are 5 basic SETS of pulleys, and you can not mix them.
I-6 Chevy 67-69
Small Block Chevy with short water pump. 67-68
Small block Chevy with long water pump. 69
Big Block Chevy with short water pump 67-68.
Big Block Chevy with long water pump 69
The 302 SBC has deep groove pulleys available.
An Electric water pump is available for drag race only applications. (no belts !)

Hmmm, my orignal machined large diameter alternator pully is in the memory-parts box so the alternater will charge at idle, but the rest of these guys are original, balancer and fan too. (well, not the power steering)

Mixed pulleys meaning; the chrome 1 wire alternator has its own. The crank pulley and H20 pump pulleys are of unknown origin. The H20 pump pulley had washers epoxied on the back to help with alignment (I was told). It has the long water pump installed on the block. The block is a 66 396 casting.
As far as how much drag racing I will do? The best answer is not much to start with. The local track has some special events like "Chevy Day" in May and a "Fastest Street Car Shootout" in July. I'll be in the Sportsmans class on days like these. Eventually either next year or the year after I'd like to get into their Gold Cup Challenge. It is a points system over a series of 10 events during the season. I won't do that with this engine. The block is better suited to a restorer of a vette or chevelle (375 h.p. suffix code).
Nice engine bay Fred!
thanks

Thanks Brett! Ya know, I better take another picture. That distributor is gone, so's the coil, headers, spark plug wires, Holley Projection, engine freshen-up,,, even the thermostat housing. where's the camera?

Apparently the water pump pulley is off of a small block. I'll get a BB pulley. I'd rather keep it stock in appearance. So if the stock pulley will handle track duty, which it probably will, I'll try the junk yard. Or spend the big money from a resto catalog.
