I dont remember having these problems before paint. My car idles fine but when I hit the gas I get hesitation and sometimes a pop through the carb. I read every post I could find on this and I think ive narrowed it down to the carb. I adjusted the valves and verified cam doesnt have a wiped lobe. I checked the resistance of the plug wires, firing order, advance is at 15deg. Fuel pump is working. Float levels look good. When I tried adjusting the idle screws it seemed like I had no change in vacuum, which is about 12in at 800rpm. I still need to check for a vacuum leak but I cant hear any, motor is kinda loud. Im about to take it to someone if I cant figure this out on my own.

I did pull the dist at one point. Would the motor run with the dist off 1 tooth?

recheck your timing!! find tdc and go from there...off a tooth or two will do it!!

It wasnt a tooth off. But I did discover I was only giving it 13 degrees advance. I upped that to about 16 and that seems to have stopped the pop but I still get a little bit of hesitation. Is 16 degrees enough initial timing for a BBC?

I'd go for more timing - big chamber to start a fire and feel the effects later.

And Stop. There is no such thing as a distributor being a tooth off. All that matters is what you see with the timing light.
Tim, move the timing up. Start around 18° and go up from there.
