Here is the data. 69 Camaro, 454, Edelbrock Air Gap intake with Holley 800 DP, 14" round drop down Air Cleaner (3" element) The top of the air cleaner is 1 1/2 inches above the cowl line. The front cap is off the car. Will the standard cowl hood clear? I should have thought about this when I built the engine!!! If not, any suggestions beside the obvious.

Bruce i also have a BBC with BB frame/motor mounts, Standard Cowl Hood, Air Gap, and a Holley 1000 DP. I also have a drop base with a 14" x 3" K&N air cleaner and it clears no problem.

Should be fine under a cowl hood I would think.

Just make sure the air cleaner stud out of the carb isn't too long so it punches the hood...

....again :D

i got the same, bbc,bbc frame mounts, airgap, standard cowl, holley 750 DP w/electric choke, 14"X3" drop base, plenty of room, from inside of the car u can see thru the cowl the top of the air cleaner sits flush with the hood, and i recommend the K&N X-stream air cleaner as well

Thanks guys. The pix look terrific, I will send some when I get a chance. I like the KN air filter. I have chrome plated billet aluminum tall valve covers with matching AC, Chrome pulleys and brackets, PS 9" booster. Got carried away with the chrome. Now on to the body! Hey Dave, no need to remind me of that hood slam. How about when the kid opened the door to the freshly painted hood that fell on the floor!

Similar deal here, BB Frame and motor mounts, Standard cowl hood, RPM Air gap and Holly Street Avenger.

I have a 3" tall filter on it now but I have more than enough room for a 4" filter (checked with modeling clay).

Here are some images. You will notice how high the AC next to the Dist cap and the cowl. Is this similar to you guys engines? I realize the angle of the image changes the perspective. Thanks, guys

Bruce can you measure the drop base in the bottom of the air cleaner, it looks like you don't have enough drop. But that fine because they sell just the drop base separately if needed.

The bottom is the lowest drop down from Summit Racing. It only lowered it 1/2 inch from the one it came with. Maybe some other company makes a lower one . . . Edelbrock recommended Summit. I put a level on top of the AC and measured it to the top of the cowl and it was 1 1/2 inches above the cowl. It should fit in the 2" deep part of the hood, provided it lines up with the AC hole. I could get a lower profile air cleaner as well. Or as you can tell I can wait until the car is together and then see what happens!

Your side pix show that your air cleaner sits like mine as I compare the shot you have on the engine stand in relation to the dist cap.

I don't know who/what you're talking about

And who would lean a freshly-painted hood against the opening-side of a door anyway? :p

Anyone run this engine/intake/air cleaner combo but with a SS hood? I would like the benefits from the Air Gap, but I would really like to put my SS hood back on. Does the regular RPM sit a little lower?

OK....here i go "BUMPING" up an old thread (atleast im using the search function)
So my 454 is mounted on BBC frame stands with the correct rubbers,I have a Edelbrock performer Q-jet alloy intake and i'm going to run the original Q-jet carb for now
I have a S.S cowl hood but theres no way a 14" air filter will fit as the engine sits along way to the passenger side THUS stopping any possible fitment of a large filter??
What have i done wrong??
