View Full Version : Removed entire front suspension, where do I start for alignment? forttusken Mar 31st, 09, 05:51 PM I had my car completely dissasembled, I have a new steering box joints etc. I am not sure how to get my tie rods equal length and the steering wheel centered. Where do I start? Thanks! daverichard Apr 1st, 09, 08:46 AM I will assume you have the control arms, springs and spindles already installed. Install steering box, and and idler arm. If the steering wheel is in the car, make sure you center the steering box and clock the steering wheel correctly before you attach the rag joint between the column and the steering box. Put inner and outer rod ends together with the adjusting sleeves and place it in the aproximate middle of the threads on both rods. Attach the assembled tie rods to the center link and then install the assembly by attaching the tie rods the the spindles and the center link to the idler arm. Install the wheels and center them. Using a tape measure, adjust the adjuster sleeves until the measurement from wheel to wheel is equal from the fronts and backs of the wheels. Make sure you adjust the same amount on each side. Finally, with the wheels pointed straight, and the steering box centered in its range of travel. Install the pitman arm by attaching it to the steering box and the center link. This should get you close enought to get to the alignment shop. "This should get you close enought to get to the alignment shop. " And check a recent post re camber/caster/toe setting. you need a guy experianced in A frame suspensions other wisehe will be going around in circles trying to get shims right and more or less even both sides. yellow69RS Apr 1st, 09, 03:38 PM Should only be three places that the steering wheel can get off center, the wheel itself, the pitman arm and the tierod sleeves. The rag joint should be a one way only assembly, flat spot on box , two different pins and a one way shape to column. Pitman arm will go on four different ways. And the steering wheel will go on any direction (except locking column cars). Someone on this board has set caster with a magnetic angle guage on the spindle, that will work. Camber can be set with a carpenter's level. Jeff forttusken Apr 1st, 09, 05:00 PM Thanks, all helpful! Since I put it all together a while ago and forgot what I checked. I think I may have my rag joint to box shaft off a few splines. I am not sure mine has a flat spot there. My old one doesn't. |
