I'm trying to remove both drain plugs from the block to drain out all fluid. The driver side is going nowhere. First, I ruined the hex head trying to turn it so I drilled it out and tried using a thread extractor/easy out whatever you call it. The easy out is in the hole but it ain't going NOWHERE. Now I've ruined the square bit on the end of the easy out trying to turn it. I even sprayed WD40 down inside the block hoping to catch the plug from the inside.
What now? Put heat on it? Oh yeah, the engine is still in the car full of oil. Somehow that doesn't seem wise. I think a big pair of vise grips might hold it enought to turn it, assuming I can free it up. If I heat just the plug from the outside it should loosen up, right?
Thanks.:(

Yes, I would try heat. The other thing, that you could do is to drill it out almost to the the threads, and then collapse the plug with a chisel. The plug should be in a water jacket, so you shouldn't need to worry about the oil. You just don't want the metal shavings in your radiator ! If you drilled through the plug, you could also tap it for a smaller plug !

Tapping it for a smaller plug sure sounds like a good idea. I would also try using a chisel. If you can get a good bite you can hit it hard, usually more effective than trying to turn it.

If it's not leaking, I'd leave it alone. I speak from experience.

I'll try heat first, and if that doesn't work, maybe I can drill it out bigger and collapse the threads. I had no idea it would be that hard to remove. thanks for the help!

The trick with those (for the next time...) is that they rust on the inside of the block.
The threads won't come OUT because the threads inside the water jacket are covered in rust.
Break it loose trying to TIGHTEN it. Then go back and forth until it comes out. It will be tough all the way out. The vibration from an impact helps, but still go both ways, like rocking a car stuck in the now. A lil heat don't hurt either.
ONce I got mine out, I replaced em with 1/8" N PT brass rediator petcocks. Peice of cake to drain the block now.
