That motor look s like it's about 5 minutes old. No way it is that clean after 41 years even if it was in a barrier bag. It's been cleaned up and painted at the very least.

He even says the heads have harden seats added and that no seals were put in the motor when he cleaned it up. So it has been apart to some extent at least. Hard to prove that it is NOS and not just rebuilt IMO.

Those are called "pink rods". It's magnaflux residue, not rust.

Also, if you look at the rods, it shows the piston bottom and has a #1 on the bottom of the piston...dont know if factory stamped pistons for cylinder placement???

I'm not saying it is or isn't worth the bin price but some of the points being brought up to fault it are a bit thin!

IT HAS BEEN DISSASSEMBLED AND CLEANED AND HAS BEEN ON MY ENGINE STAND IN MY BASEMENT FOR YEARS.

THE HEADS HAVE HARDENED SEATS INSTALLED SO NO LEAD ADDITIVES WILL BE NEEDED. Depending when he got it this was a no brainer folks were freaking out about unleaded gas when the switch came about.

I HAVE NOT INSTALLED ANY SEALS, THAT WILL AGE, BUT ONLY HAND TIGHTENED EVERYTHING TO KEEP THE DUST OUT

Sounds like this guy is fairly anal about things, I have seen all kinds of collectibles look as good as day one 40, 50 plus years later.

This forum is in jepordy because too many use it for sport and I would hate to see us loose it. Let's please try to keep to facts that you can back up.

Now as for price, last year at one of the goodguys shows there was a complete used DZ302 carb to pan inc exhaust manifolds but no smog that was priced at about $6500. The seller said price was firm and he didn't know the mileage or if it would run but it turned over. As Bill stated this stuff is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

My guess is the seller listed this as an advertisment and even though he would love to get his bin the idea is sell it off ebay to avoid the fees...

Just for the record, I wasn't trying to fault the engine or claim that it is or isn't NOS as the seller says it is. I just said that it is hard to PROVE in the environment that we are in now where even honest people have to prove themselves because of all the crooked people that are out there.

I just said that it is hard to PROVE in the environment that we are in now where even honest people have to prove themselves because of all the crooked people that are out there. Not really all that hard to prove if the seller is willing to allow some minor dissasembly and it sounds like it's already been taken apart. Original GM bearings are date coded and will have a GM part number. Factory cylinder honing will almost always look different than something done by hand. Etc. With that all being said I agree the asking price is a bit high but for someone with a mint condition Z/28 that is only lacking the correct engine it may be a bargain. Buyers set prices, NOT sellers...
