: Will a 92 454 TBI easily convert for a 73 Z28?
townhome May 19th, 03, 06:00 AM I have a 454 from a 92 pick up that was totalled. My unoriginal 1973 Z28 needs a motor and I really like the BB torque as well as fuel injection. (throttle body in this case) Anyone direct me to info on this swap would be appreciated. Can I eliminate most of the sensors, computer, etc and just run a high pressure fuel pump for fuel injection, older HEI ignition, and make it work properly? I will be running the original Muncie.
Thanks for any advise.

Dutch69Camar May 19th, 03, 09:28 PM Probably not, you will need the computer and most if not all the sensors to make swap work. Did you get all these parts from the wrecked pick-up? If not it might get expensive buying them new. Then i would convert the engine to a quadrajet or holley.
Everett#2390 May 20th, 03, 12:43 AM As Dutch suggested, only if you have the donor truck can the swap be made simple. You will need all the sensors, wiring, fuel pump and its lines, ECM, VSS, and Charcoal cannister to make the swap.
Or, like Dutch said, make it carburated and plug in an older HEI.
BBCamaro May 20th, 03, 02:01 AM hey, as they have said it could be done but all the tbi injection motors have peanut heads, very very small ports, they make like 450 ft lbs and like 230 hp, now you can use the bottom end but i am not sure how happy you would be with the performance other than 1000-2000 rpm, i would throw a set of oval port heads a intake and some headers and that will help the power out quite a bit, goodluck

townhome May 20th, 03, 06:21 PM Thanks you guys. I have all the computer parts but Jakes comments about the heads make me want to change them. If I was to do that I might as well sell the 454 complete with computer and start from scratch. It is assembled and complete with harness. Probably worth more than just a short block.
That's what I needed to hear from you guys. Thanks again. You helped me decide.

Everett#2390 May 21st, 03, 12:56 AM Personally, I wouldn't worry about the heads. You're going to build for torque. I have 454 TBI in my '88 Std Cab dually and there is no problem with it, gets 2nd gear chirp and runs low 15's in the quarter. Not bad for 6000 lb.
The truth comes out you do have the ECM and its harness. This would be a good project. Build for torque, small port heads needed, it has them. But, being ECM-controlled, you are limited by camshaft design. Of course, you can drop in a 454SS cam and re-chip from GM.
Just my opinion, everybody has one........
