View Full Version : Rear end Doldrums
chief Sep 27th, 02, 10:39 AM Well I finally scrapped off the crud and found the rear end code: BB 0624G1 E. Great a dang 2.56:1 posi. The previous owner who changed the rear end from the 3.08 peg leg thought it was a 3.08 posi. At least he put multi-leaf springs in! With a slightly built 327 doing around 300HP and a munci 4 spd no wonder this thing was a little slow off of the line. I would like to go to something around the 3.55 to 3.73 range.
Question now is do I change the carrier and gears (probably $600 - $800 including labor) or do I shop for a posi 12 bolt or 8.5 10 bolt with gears closer to what I'd like? All opinions gratefully accepted!!
Chief
big gear head Sep 27th, 02, 12:45 PM The 8.5 from a '72 or later Nova will be a stronger rear end and cheaper than a 12 bolt. It should handle anything your 327 can put out. The posi units for the 8.5 are not hard to find in '71-'81 Camaros and Trans Ams. All later model 8.5 gears in the full size trucks will fit it. These usually have 3.42 or 3.73 gears in them. If you want to make it stronger you can use the new Eaton posi with 30 spline axles. This will make it almost as strong as the 12 bolt.

BBCamaro Sep 28th, 02, 01:32 AM hey biggearhead, sorry for taking away from original post, but i have a ford 9 inch rear out of a bronco that i had redrilled for chevy bolt pattern, with 7/16 studs, and have not welded the perches on, what do you think of landrums clamp style spring seats???for 3 inch tubes only you can weld once you have correct angle or you can use the set-screw, i thought these would be great cause you wouldn't need shims to get it right, then you could weld it or if you ever draged any you could change pinion angle for optimum drag performance, anyway let me know, thanks alot

big gear head Sep 28th, 02, 07:08 AM Jake,
I am not familiar with these. Is this something ised in a dirt or asphalt oval track car? Sounds like a good set up, but will it work with un paralell springs like the Camaro has?

big gear head Sep 28th, 02, 08:21 PM Jake,
I looked at them and I think they would be fine if you welded them in place after you made your adjustments. I don't think I would trust them if they were just clamped in place. I have seen too many welds break and I don't think these would clamp tight enough to holt the axle tube.

BBCamaro Sep 29th, 02, 02:55 AM thanks, so i will use set screw just to test drive toi make sure i have no vibration at cruise and then weld to axle, i think you might have to drill and tap whole which set screw would go into, this probaly would be strong enough, but i think i will weld once i have proper angle, thanks alot
