Hood_Lum Apr 5th, 09, 09:04 PM Do you really save much putting together your own kit?
Zman's LS1 brackets from ebay - $60
Shims (.480") for disc spindles - $60
Might have been better off getting one from speedtech.
LS1 front brakes (rotors, calipers) - $100
Resurface rotors and new brake pads - $75
Various grade 8 bolts ~ $20 (5/8"x1.5" fine + M12x1.75 25mm)
New bearings ~ $35
Drum hubs - $60?
Machine hubs down to 5.90" - $forgot
Change out wheel studs - $75
5 line kit from Kore3 ~ $150
That's about $650 already and that's just for the front.
Rear caliper, rotors, brackets - $65
Resurface rear rotors - $tba
New brake pads - $tba
Parking brake cable - $tba - any suggestions on where to get some?
Weld parking brake bracket - $tba
This is all I could think of while sitting here at work. :p

Hood_Lum Apr 14th, 09, 03:35 AM The install was actually quite simple. Everything just bolted right on. I had a frozen caliper and I think I spent more time getting the pin off than doing the whole swap.

You'll probably need a new MC for that set-up, and most likely a prop valve of some sort. (adjustables are nice and around $50) And you'll need to do some work on the rear brake hardlines. Super cheap if you can flare your own. A bracket for the hard/flex union.
I did a similar swap a couple years ago - I think you CAN save money over a kit, but all of the running around makes the kits attractive. I actually had fun doing it myself, though.
Keep up the good work!

chuckboy7 Apr 15th, 09, 03:38 PM Al what are these shims your talking about? I don't see them in your pics. {lease fill me in, thanks Jeoff.

I think this was directed to Hood Lum...but anyway, look at the third picture down from the top. The shim is the big fat round washer (spacer) between the spindle and the caliper bracket.
Mat Klemp Apr 15th, 09, 05:33 PM I think you do save compared to a kit when I Compare to Baer brakes for over $1300.00 just the fronts, no lines ETC?

pdq67 Apr 15th, 09, 09:09 PM Please run the numbers on my "pdqCBB" 13" 1988 'Vette front rotors and homemade caliper brackets that hold Van big single piston calipers and also my 11.75" 1989 Camaro rear rotors again w/ homemade caliper brackets that mount 1980 Cad Seville e-brake calipers and see what it costs!
I figure the cost savings is in carving out your own caliper brackets and a cardboard template of my front bracket is free for free!

How many miles do you have on that set-up? How well does it work?
pdq67 Apr 16th, 09, 07:07 PM I know!!
I'm a sorry SOB b/c I'm not on the road yet after ALL these years but it's gonna be running this summer!
Just run the numbers taking out the cost difference of bought caliper brackets vs homemade ones! And don't forget the rebuilt big single piston caliper price diff. too!

Hood_Lum Apr 17th, 09, 02:15 AM I have a 7" booster and MC combo I got off ebay. Dunno if it'll work right for my new set up. If it doesn't it'll give me an excuse to get the CPP's MCPV-1 master cylinder.
Haven't started on the rear yet. Looked at it thought. The the previous owner's work is a joke. He's got lines doing loops back there on a drum brake set up. I bought a tubing bender and double flare kit so should I add that to the price tag as well. LOL. I love buying tools. :)
pdq67 Apr 17th, 09, 07:42 PM I'm going to attempt to run a 1.25" dia. piston power M/C in a manual mode for my "pdqCBB" conversion only b/c I have an old mag that said that one really helped these conversions b/c of fluid volume!
If it take's too much stomp to haul her down, I will do as my friend David Pozzi says!

novaderrik Apr 17th, 09, 08:42 PM i had about $550 in the 12" C4 Vette parts for the front of my Nova- and everything except for my stock drum hubs was brand new GM or reputable aftermarket equivalent.
that price included the 77 Malibu manual master cylinder, Wilwood prop valve for the rear brakes, and Russel stainless steel flexible lines.
that car just flat out stopped.
it would probably cost a bit more now, since it bought the parts here and there from 2000 or so until i got them on the car in the spring of 2003.
Hood_Lum Apr 17th, 09, 09:46 PM I'm just afraid that after all this it wont work right because my motor's not making enough vacuum.
pdq67 Apr 18th, 09, 08:20 AM I'm talking the 13" front rotor jobbers and the cheap big, single piston calipers..

Doing this on my 68.
Ditto on pricing total.

run it as a manual setup and vacuum isn't a problem.
my car was as easy to drive and stop with the manual C4 brakes as any car with properly working power brakes- my 50 year old mom didn't have any problems with the brakes.
Hood_Lum Apr 18th, 09, 01:24 PM If the booster is not getting enough vacuum isn't that the same as running a manual set-up?
Hood_Lum Apr 18th, 09, 05:13 PM I did a test fit and it seemed like my rims would clear.
I tightened everything up to day and the spokes on my rim hits the very corner of the caliper. Guess I'll have to get a 1/4" spacer.
So FYI, 17" Budnik Gasser rims does not work with LS1 brakes without a spacer.
Hood_Lum Apr 22nd, 09, 03:02 AM Ordered some .125 wheel spacers from summit and recieved it the next day. Awesome!
Drove it in n out of the garage and I definately need a new MC.
Not enough vacuum + wrong MC. Feels like I only have rear brakes it's so bad.
