Man...solid surface and jack stands and I'm still worried when I get under my car...

This guy had concrete blocks in soft ground and was found by his 4yr old daughter....daughter tried to fix him by putting band aids on him...HOW SAD.

i try to never get completely underneath a car unless absolutely nessesary. And, if i do, what i do is to lay 3, 4 or more tires and wheels (tires mounted on the wheel) down underneath the car. This way if the jacks and jackstands fail, i won't get flattened into paper.

Tragic to say the least... I know it can happen but you never or very rarely hear of a car falling off jackstands on a solid foundation. Cinder block, concrete block, brick etc you are really asking for trouble. Soft ground is a sure way to set yourself up for something bad or fatal as in this case.

A little fear helps motovate the respect needed to undertake the job safely. Like I said it's tragic for the guy to have died working on a car and it's very sad to think that little child lost a parent. Let this man's mistake be a wake-up call for all the things you do and don't give a second thought about that could harm you...

This is a very very sad story. And a warning to all of us. I use jack/jackstand on cement only. I think I will also start putting something under the tires...

I always use 2 extra jacks stands just in case...
I'll toss an extra tire or two under there from now on as well... this story is dramatic enough to make me. My daughter is 5.
Very sad.

I was in the Volunteer Fire Dept for 6 years... we had a call of someone trapped under a car once.
The guy was doing his brakes with only one tire off the ground..... from a bumper jack :clonk:
As a large box truck went by the wind rocked the car enough that it fell off the jack breaking both his legs.
So
#1 is use the proper tools/jacks/stands.
#2 always use extreme caution changing a flat on the side of the road.

This is a very sad story that should have never happened.

I guess its not overkill when i use 6 jackstands and put the jacks themselves under the car when i work on them.. if one fails i have 6-7 backups!

You know, I still see guys who will place a stand under a car, but will leave the car up on the floor jack. They don't bother to bring the car down on the stand. I can see a potential accident by doing this, as the jack might let go, and if the stand isn't in the right place, or the lever in the proper postion on the stand, the vehicle could still come down on them.

wow...that is very sad. I feel for his daughter.

on a side note......this is why I own a 4 wheel drive: No need to jack it up....just crawl under it! I often feel like I overkill it though if I have to jack it up and use multiple stands with the jack as well. Never can be too safe ya know.

What a tragic story. I have a 5yo daughter myself, and I could see her doing the same thing. I feel bad for the poor little sweetheart having to find her dad like that - this will probably affect her for the rest of her life.

Whenever I put a car up on stands, I take great care in making sure it is stable before I get under it. I usually try to rock it back and forth to make sure that it is stable and does not move at all. The idea of the extra stands is a good one.

We had a member of our church and a father of 4 killed last year when his Corvette rolled off the ramps it was on and crushed him. Many times this kind of things happens to people who would otherwise know better, but get in a hurry or improvise when they don't have the needed equipment.

My 99 is up on 4 jackstands on a concrete floor right now, been that way for a couple days, spring clean up and inspection. I still try to keep my time under the car to a minimum, get all the tools ready first, everything I might need, etc. It's a necessary evil, but I've had two instances of jacks failing during my 47yr lifetime, and caution has always played a signifigant part in never having suffered an injury from a car falling on me.
