View Full Version : Begining cam class 101
Greg 67SS/RS Apr 6th, 09, 07:46 PM I need some basic questions answered as I'm just the owner of an old 1967 camaro. I was going to start with a basic engine rebuild as the original motor is not running, but now I've been reading the site and I have more questions than answers. When I talk to the engine builder, I at least want some basic info and don't want to sound completely ignorant.
What is a stock cam for a 1967 Camaro 350 V8 4 bbl, and what is meant by "slightly over stock" ? I see numbers like 262 268 270 etc. are these known as mild street cams? I want a mild street cam that idles smoothly but sounds good but not a loud rumbler that sounds like its going to putt out at idle.
The original carb is gone, but I have a nice clean Qjet 4 bbl that is for the car, I think it is a 750 CFM, so I plan to use that instead of buying a new intake and carb. No new heads- but it will be decked and it will have hardened valve seats. I don't know what the compression is, but I assume it will be close to the stock CR. It Will be bored 30 over, add headers, 373 rear end, 350 TH and maybe a 400 TH, 27 inch rear wheels.
It will be a street driver, so what cam will give me the quickness, hp and all around good driveability. I like what I've been reading about Voodoo versatility. This is the start of a long project, but I want to do it right. Some day I will want to take it to the strip just once in my lifetime.:yes:
Any cam comments will be greatly appreciated.
Codi Apr 8th, 09, 10:48 AM Kind of surprised this post has languished with no answer. Sounds like you are planning a stock rebuild of the 350. Besides the rebuild, reconditioning the heads is another good idea. As for a cam selection, keep in mind the valve springs should also be changed/upgraded. The originals are just old and may not support the new, more aggressive cam. As for a cam, hydrallic is the norm in choice, with new lifters, springs, and retainer. I would order a complete cam kit from the cam manufacturer. This should give you the entire package. I would review several cam maker sights and read about the cams they offer. Comp Cams seems to be the leader but others are just as good, isky, Elgin, Howards, etc. Stick with a cam that will work between idle and 4500 to 500 RPM, 110 to 112 LSA (lobe seperation angle), moderate duration, 230 to 245 and mild lift, around 450 to 470. BUT FIRST, read the manufacturers d4escription of the cam profile, this will be most accurate. Some are good with a manual shift, otehrs with an automatic.
wiskeesour Apr 8th, 09, 10:57 AM If you want, you can pick a few cams that you are set on and we can sort thru them and give advice and help decide what is better for your application. There are ALOT of ppl on this board. I highly doubt you will find a cam someone doesnt have experience with in just about the same application. I have done MANY strokers and mild rebuilds myself.
Im still learning. I wish Osmosis actually worked.
Kage79 Apr 8th, 09, 11:05 AM Here are two good voodoo cam kits to look at 60101 and 60202. I think that either one would work great for what you want. They will both idle fairly smooth but you will be able to hear a little beef in the idle. And both work well with automatic trans. and stock exaust. The 60101 has operating range of 1000-5500 rpm and the 60102 is about 1400-5500. Also if you call lunati tech line, they are very helpful and will help you decide what cam to get. They will take time to answer all of your questions you have above and explain how the cam works. Tech Line: 662-892-1500

pdq67 Apr 8th, 09, 08:42 PM I just found this thread!
It's the great old -929 cam at 195/202, 112/108, .390"/.410" lift!
And imho a great one step up cam is Summit's generic Performer Cam at 204/214, 112/107(?), .420"/.443" lift or thereabouts.
I switched out my -929 cam at 1200 miles from new in the early summer of '67 for the great old 350hp/327 cam, the -151!
My 350SS L-48 engine pulled like a F** freight-train from the mid of 1st all the way to the top of 3rd and it pulled 29.5" tall tires w/ my M-20 and 3.31's up to 145 mph easy back then.
He, He!! Got my keaster in a tad of trouble back then b/c of it early one Monday morning! The Trooper on a tripod radar watch couldn't unhook quick enough to catch me is all.

Greg 67SS/RS May 11th, 09, 09:46 PM Guys, I've been reading, reading all this cam stuff and still haven't made up my mind (mind boggling). Lunati, Comp and Summit.
I think Lunati 60101 or 60102, Summit K1102 or K1103, Comp 12-670-4 nostalgic cam or 12-234-2.
I've decided I will be going with the 2004R tranny and the stock 3.73 posi and this car is a street/highway cruiser but, I want a little kick off the line for fun. I really don't want a lumpy lopey sound but just want to know its there. I keep thinking slightly over stock.
Please I need you finale comments as I'm in the 11th hour. I bring the motor to the engine builder this Friday. Budget is also a concern but, I want to get it right the first time. Please, I need your last minute comments and opinions.
Thanks Greg
ace's68 May 11th, 09, 09:54 PM You can't go wrong with a comp cams 268.
I had one in a .040" 327, crappy 210 heads, and a few other supporting mods.
It lugged a 3.08 rear gear and a 27" tall tire around DANG good, great low end grunt and had no problem rapping up to 5,500rpm, though I had taken it to 7,200 just for shats and giggles a few times.
Good cam, good streetability, not all that aggressive, some what noticeable idle, idle to 5,500rpm is what I felt out of it with my other mods on top of it.
pdq67 May 12th, 09, 06:10 PM Ditto the old CC 268HE!
Note, Nothing fancy here at all and it flat works!
The SOTA version will be Harold's Lunati VooDoo 268 or UDHarold's newest version of his VooDoo.
Call Harold here at...
(662) 562-4933
if you want his latest 268 cam!
And if you do, please say hello to Harold for me.

yellow heap May 12th, 09, 06:45 PM DittoX2 on the cc 268he in a 350-Rally a awsome match for a milder application
Greg 67SS/RS May 12th, 09, 09:31 PM I talked to the engine builder today and he is going to order the Lunati 60101 cam and lifters set. Now, I have a new question, should I order springs from Lunati or order Summit springs p/n Sum 174001? However, it seems like they are a lower spring rate.
Thanks,
Greg

pdq67 May 14th, 09, 08:18 AM Back again, I just caught the part about "cam-cackle", so please consider the old Crane 274HO6.
It's on 106/102 so will cackle fine and then it will smooth right out a schosh off-idle, imho!

docwilcar May 15th, 09, 12:23 PM Ditto on the 274H06. You can get an Elgin clone #E1785PM for $99 including lifters from competitionproducts.com On a 8.0-8.5 c.r. 350 this cam will make 14" of vac at 1000 and 11 at 850 rpm. Nice cam if you want the "cackle" as Paul says but from a cam with a short duration. Have your cake and eat it too. Valve timing is 7-31-39-(1) at .050 so it actually closes the intake valve 4 degrees earlier than the comp 268 cam which is good for low speed cylinder pressure. Valve timing on the 268HE is 3-35-43-(5).
pdq67 May 15th, 09, 01:56 PM And another, "back again's"..
The OEM, 350SS L-48 engine is right at 10 to 1 CR'd w/ true 4-notch, flat-top pistons and stock GM .020"/Mr. Gasket shim headgaskets. It's supposed to be 10.25 to 1, probably blueprinted.
It had a 750 Q-Jet.
Now to get to why I came back.
If your engine is still an OEM 350SS, you can run one of MANY 268/270/272 and even a couple of 274 advertised duration cams like we are talking about.
You pull her down and find big chambered heads and +12 cc dished/4-notch flat-top pistons and then you need to figure out what your real CR. is so we can help you pick a cam that will suit your dynamic compression ratio.
I go by this... Advertised duration here....
8 to 1, 250;
9 to 1, 260;
9.5 to 1, 265;
10 to 1, 270;
10.25 to 1, 280;
10.5 to 1, 285;
11 to 1, 290; and finally
12 to 1, a 300 cam...
