Haven't posted in a while, been busy and not working on Camaros much, but fixing to do some tradin'.

I am looking at a low mile (22K) L78 four speed Norwood car. It has been restored, but everything I have seen on the car leads me to believe the mileage is correct. The front seats have been recovered, but the rest of the interior and glass is orginal.

This car has the POP and everything checks out with the exception of the transmission. It is an 02B car and POP shows the transmission as P9B05.
The partial VIN is stampted on the case, but the number on the trans is P9A19A. It does not appear to be a restamp. It still has the original "bayonet" style shifter.

Is there any way the transmission got switch on the assembly line or switched and stamped by the dealer? I have seen several made up cars and this one just doesn't appear to be one.

Any ideas?

How about a fake POP? The trans date is more norm than the date for the trans. on the pop, so my guess would be a fake pop. If the pop is original, then the trans is a restamp.
Try and determine which is more original.

The POP is still stuck on the warranty book and appears to be original. I compared it to the POP for my car and it appears authentic.

One other thing that seals the deal is the partial VIN is stamped on the pad behind the alternator and NOT by the oil filter. It is an 02B car.

On a 02B car the parial VIN should be stamped by the oil filter. This would raise a red flag. The muncie should have a partial VIN, does it match the car?

I'd have to see pics. But as noted, VIN is normally by the oil filter in Feb. Not that it's not possible......

What assembly plant built this car. If it was assembled in California the stamp on the pad could be correct from what I understand. (Posted while Kurt was posting)

The partial VIN on the trans matches the car. I inspected the car, but I didn't have a lot of time and I did not compare all the numbers and start digesting until I got home.

I have owned about 7 camaros in the last few years, but all of them were small blocks. I have a 09A (68) car that has the VIN stamped on the engine pad, but all of the others (01C, 02D, 05A, 06?, etc.) had the VIN stamped by the oil filter. Not being as intimatelyfamiliar with big blocks, I thought maybe the VIN might be stamped on the engine pad for an 02B car.

Problem with a fully restored car is that it's harder to look for clues as to original b/b or more importantly original L78. First thing is to determine if the POP is original...followed closely by the cowl tag. Photos on this site will help with that. At least then you will know if it was a b/b. If you can't confirm original cowl tag, look for all the "usual suspects" for SS. (disc brakes, delay valve-aka prop valve by booster, pressure reducer valve on subframe beneath driver door, reinforcing plate for exhaust hanger in left rear wheelwell, etc) See if there are any signs of it having two fuel lines. Check the fuel line clips, and the sending unit. (that would rule out L78, but would be correct for L34 and L35.)

Cowl tag is authentic, it does have a single fuel line, and the proper exhaust hanger. With the Trans not matching the POP and the partial VIN on the deck pad have given me an uneasy feeling. I am going to pass on the deal, especially considering that I was going to trade my 9300 mi pace car that I KNOW is right.
