: UDHarold's Cam is in the 302 WOW
69z28boy Apr 7th, 09, 12:59 PM YouTube - Aaron's Z new cam and headers
got the new cam in, broke it in... shut it down, let it sit for two hours... set up the camera and took this video...
it hasn't had a timing light on it, nothing touched on the carb...aside from the curb idle screw, and i'm sure it needs the valves checked after the 45 minute breakin.
this cam replaced the 30-30. i also installed headers on the car, so it will be hard to do a deadnutz comparison, but i've driven this car with headers before so I know what the 30-30 felt like.
just from pulling it back into the garage, it is much more responsive downlow and will be 100% easier to take off from at lights...
tomorrow, i get the exhaust welded back up and it will be back on the road.
can't wait to get it tweaked and i'll report back with more info on how it runs.
Aaron
BLADE4444 Apr 7th, 09, 01:33 PM Sounds awesome, what are the specs on the cam? I love small motors that rev like crazy thats why i threw out the 350 and going with a 327/4-speed this year. I'm running a comp solid flat tappet with .540" lift and about 280 duration.
69z28boy Apr 7th, 09, 01:56 PM its like 272 at .020, 243 at .050 and .518 lift on a 108...
it revs something fierce
A
Kage79 Apr 7th, 09, 02:36 PM I have the same cam im getting ready to install but it has a custom grind to it so that it will pull more vacuum. (243/243 @ .050 and 518/518 lift, with a 112 LSA). Do you have any idea what you are pulling for vacuum so that I can kind of get a ball park idea of what to expect. I am shooting for 17
69z28boy Apr 7th, 09, 02:52 PM dont' know... i didn't put a vaccuum guage on it yet... i almost got it on a 112 myself... but glad I went for 108..
it definately makes over 10 becasue my brakes have more vaccuum now than they did with the 30-30 LOL..
thats the tight seat duration working there.
but it is much nastier sounding than the 30-30...
once I have the exhaust connected... i'm going to do another video.. and then do a video/audio comparision from the same angle with my car when it had the 30-30.
should be an interesting comparison.
Aaron
Kage79 Apr 7th, 09, 03:10 PM I wish I could have gone with the 108 LSA but I just dont think that would have made enough vacuum for my rules. I think that the 110 might have but to be on the safe side I went with the 112. Guess Ill put it together tonight and find out what it pulls for vac. and I will no for my future builds
Mike68RS Apr 7th, 09, 04:12 PM Sweet sounds Aaron!

pdq67 Apr 8th, 09, 08:21 PM Some of the guy's over at Big Brother have said that some of Harolds cams have a distinct sound to them that guys in the know notice! It's about the exhaust valve opening point if not mistaken and the slow close ramps he use's to keep from beating everything hard.
He's explained it over there if you want to do a search??
pdq67
69z28boy Apr 8th, 09, 08:42 PM PDQ is right...
he explained it to me once... something about exhaust pulse harmonics >?
his lobes are asymetrical....
i can tell just in the short time i've had it running that it has a very distinct crackle to it... very unlike a "lope" that one typically associates a big cam with.
it actually sounds like a top fueler idling in the garage...
i have another video with me trying to adjust idle and stuff... i'll post that next...
A
Kage79 Apr 8th, 09, 08:54 PM I got mine all buttoned up tonight and wow do I love the sound of that cam...:) Can't go wrong with a UDHarold cam....
69z28boy Apr 8th, 09, 09:05 PM YouTube - aaron's z idling open header in the garage
here is more of the car idling... i'm just doing some fine tuneing.
Kage79 Apr 8th, 09, 09:10 PM Wow I like the sound of that a heck of alot more than mine.....Wish I wasn't trying to stay inside of race rules or I would be aiming for a sound like that
69z28boy Apr 8th, 09, 09:26 PM don't forget that is open header.... so it has a LOT of crackle to it now...
the chambered exhaust you see in the photos will be hooked up tomorrow... not that it will quiet it down that much LOL..
can't wait... 12 hours and counting... more vids to come
Aaron
Kage79 Apr 9th, 09, 07:54 AM I have mine hooked up to a fresh set of Thrush Glass packs.....not liking how quiet its making it now.....Know of anyway to burn out the glass packs faster so i can get a little throat sound out of them???
70chevyz28 Apr 9th, 09, 09:28 PM man thats sounds nasty!
69z28boy Apr 10th, 09, 01:58 PM YouTube - Aaron's Z28 new cam with headers and chambered exhaust
finally with the exhaust done...
my battery is weak..which is why it has a slight hesitation in the cranking...
Kage79 Apr 10th, 09, 02:03 PM what exhaust are you running???
rsbecool Apr 10th, 09, 02:33 PM Great sound! What is the grind number or is it custom?
69z28boy Apr 10th, 09, 04:20 PM the exhaust is a Gardner Chambered Exhaust.
www.gardnerexhaust.com
very spendy but Gardner is the best for Concours Restos

sbcBill Apr 11th, 09, 05:13 PM Yes the sound is real nice "music", but how does it perform compared to the stock 30-30 cam? What trans and rear gears are you running? Is the performance moved down in the power band or is it more in the mid to upper RPM range? I would like to know the driveability on the street, how has it changed with the cam change?
Bill
pink panther Apr 11th, 09, 05:57 PM that sounds awesome, u got let us know how it runs on the street? harold recamended a cam for my 355 also can't wait to get it, it's a lunita voodoo soild flat tapped:)

And ask Harold to spec a cam for you and if you do, then please say hello to him from ol' pdq67 for me...
And you can't go wrong w/ a UDHarold spec'd cam...

DougP Apr 12th, 09, 07:07 AM Sounds pretty good -- I haven't heard a car with chambered exhaust for quite a while. Brings back memories of a friend of mine who had an orange Z/28 with chambered exhaust back when we were seniors in high school.
69z28boy Apr 12th, 09, 09:44 AM HI Gang,
i got to take the car for a few nice rides yesterday.. and i am not as thrilled as I hoped I'd be...
so either, trying 2 different carbs with multiple jet changes didn't get my car's A/F ratio even close otherwise it should have blown the doors off the old 30-30 cam....
i have neither a Rich nor Lean condition that I can tell... and the first two setups used the 4053 DZ holley, and the other setup used a Proform Double Pumper Holley
or
Harold's cams are simply too much for the head design of the old Fuelly/Z28 heads...
i don't know for sure... but I've been down this road 3 times already trying several different modern cams in Vintage 60s Smallblocks using the factory unported (or mildly ported) heads.. in all three cases, the factory cams out performed the aftermarket cams.
So i'm trying to figure this out, but if I understand correctly....
the modern cams have more aggressive ramps which keep the valve on the seat longer..and then snap it open faster... and close it quicker...
this is supposed to build more cylinder pressure (which builds more torque) and more HP by keeping the valve open longer , allowing more fuel/air to get in the chamber...
I'm guessing that this speeds up port velocity... or at least that is the goal.
in three previous cases... i went from Factory cams... one was the LT1 and the other a 30-30 in a 327 Corvette. I switched to a modern roller grind without changing exhaust or porting heads.. and in both cases power output went down... One of the Rollers was an ISKY and the other was a Lunati... both had similiar duration figures to the LT1 cam at .050 with significantly more lift.. and on 108 and 112 LSA's respectively.
Low end picked up slightly, but the top end suffered drastically.... this was hard to believe considering that I went from Solid Flat to Solid Roller. I went all over the chart with Carb Jetting... and nothing seemed to do the trick... after 6 months,,, and 4 cam changes... I found that the car simply performed the best with either the LT1 or the 30-30 cam.
In this case... I went from a 30-30, exhaust manifold equipped car to the new cam and headers with an H pipe... so it isn't a fair comparison... but I did have headers on this car about 18 months ago, and I could swear that while the low to mid range is now a bit stronger with the Lunati cam...the top end isn't any stronger than it was with the 30-30.... low to mid-range is improved but stop light to stop light is rough if the rpms drop below 1200 rpm.... and i never really had the 30-30 cam with headers dialed in...
What i'm finding is that the OE Z28 intake manifold and the exhaust ports on my 186 heads just will not support the camshafts ability to speed up port velocity.. and as a side effect, the motor doesn't make the torque or HP that it should.
I wish I had a set of AFRs and a Vic Jr or RPM Airgap to bolt on just to see. :D
I'm gonna try to get some dyno time to see what is going on.
More info soon

cam sounds really cool but maybe to big? I talked to Harold last year about a cam for my 69 Z and he sold me a
272/282
duration @.050 238/248
gross valve lift .485/.503
lsa/icl 112/108
valve lash .020/.022
Hope you get things squared away.is your motor still 11 to 1.any head work?
please keep us posted
Rich
69z28boy Apr 13th, 09, 05:09 PM i got it screaming today.... using an 850 Proform Holley... LOL
its got a little bog when you nail it... but it catches its breath and at about 3500 rpm... it will start to break the E70x15s loose....
doesn't have the Gut wrenching pull that I was hoping for....
i've yet to have the chance to really hammer it through the gears... but it definately has some guts.
I just seem to remember the 30-30 cam having more UMPH when it had the headers on...
i've decided to pull this cam out (for now) and go back to an OE hi-po grind... either the 30-30 again, or most likely the 140 offroad..... I've always wanted to try that cam, and as long as I'm doing some swaps... now is the time.
I'll probably have it swapped out in three or four days if I can get the time... I'll post again about it, when I have that cam in... I'm saving the lifters and their install order... so if I don't like the 140... this Harold cam will probably go back in.
Thanks
Aaron
69z28freak Apr 14th, 09, 12:44 AM Hi Aaron where do you get a 140 cam these days? I used to have one in my 70 Z28 and that car went like stink. Looking to build a motor right now that will out perform the LT1 with the 140 cam and 411's. Any ideas? Can't wait to hear how the 14o compares.
Everett#2390 Apr 14th, 09, 09:27 AM You'll like the -140 camshaft. I did when I had one,
67SS&99SS Apr 14th, 09, 12:42 PM where do you get a 140 cam these days?

69z28boy Apr 14th, 09, 01:21 PM Crane made a Blueprint... but now.. with the latest news on Crane.. i'm not sure you can get one.
a company called Predator Cams has them available... I think they operate under midwest or midamerica motorsports...
do a search on Ebay for Duntov 30-30 and you'll find them..
email them and they'll have the 140... in their book.. its the step up from the Duntov... you might have to ask for it by the .050 duration specs...
i've had great luck with their 30-30s so it shouold be fine...
i've got the Harold Cam out and the 140 is in... but i've got to button the rest of the motor up.. so that will be about 2 days before I get it broken in and driven... i'll report back then

sbcBill Apr 14th, 09, 04:00 PM I really loved the 140 cam when I had it in my 62 Nova LT-1 race car. I built the engine about 1970 when we had great gasoline. I remember the instant power it had when it hit about 3000 rpms, it would really plant you back in the seat. I hope you have a 4.56 rear gear or higher to get the car moving, low end torque is very, very weak. I had a 2.20 Muncie with 4.88's, the numeric multiplication made everything good. When the 12 bolt rear had its original 3.55's the car would bog like crazy while slipping the clutch terribly to get it moving. The 88's solved that problem. This was no longer a car that was easy to drive on the street, I really had to be careful with it.
Bill
69z28boy Apr 15th, 09, 02:18 PM I've got 4.10s and the wide ratio muncie.. so i'm good with gearing...
should have it on the road by the weekend...
i rode in one about 2 years ago where the car had a 2.20 muncie and 3.73s ... it didn't come on until 3500 as you say.. but it wasn't terrible to drive stoplight to stoplight... it just didn't have the torque...
this was a 302 also...
can't wait

chassisboy Apr 22nd, 09, 06:37 PM GM's p/n for the 140 cam and lifter kit is 12364053. They list it as:Mechanical flat tappet
I: 257 E: 269
I: .493 E: .512
112
For 11.0-12.5 C.R. high rpm off-road small-blocks. Blueprinted replacement for factory P/N 3927140. Auto needs 4000 rpm stall converter.
$218.57
SY1 Apr 22nd, 09, 07:28 PM GM's p/n for the 140 cam and lifter kit is 12364053.
Matt GM gets their 140 cam from Crane, have for some time. With Crane going out of business I don't know where that leaves them. Clevite TRW offers most of the old GM cams, including the 140 grind. I just sold a new one I got from Clevite, and it is still made in USA. Their lifters however are made in Mexico. Not saying that's bad, just information.
pdq67 Apr 24th, 09, 06:55 PM Might consider this CHEAP PAW solid lifter cam??
PN 10341 spec'd at;
280/246, 108/106, .498" gross lift and need's .030" lash hot on both sides!
It's in my bedroom closet now for my next junk292/301/306 depending on pistons.
They call it a 264/246 so go figure??

I only go to TC when I was looking for cam advice, and wanted to get as much info as possible.
i'm pretty sure I am where I want to be with my car now.
