Hi everyone I was wondering if anyone has an x-pipe installed on there car??? If so did it make a big difference in sound and horsepower? I am running a 427 with rpm aluminum heads, Dual 3 inch exhaust with 2 chamber flowmasters. No crossover or h-pipe Just straight dual exhaust.

Thanks

Randy
also where did you buy it from...

I had a buddy who had one on his 5.0 mustang. It sounded the same to me but he said he did gain some top end power via the better exhaust flow.

i would think it would help upper rpm power, if only because the gasses would have more pipe area available to it...would be like having a 5" pipe, instead of a 2.5, or something like that. also, the exhaust pulses would perhaps pull the next pulse out of the pipe much better. but that is just my hypothesis.

www.mrgas.com (http://www.mrgas.com) has a description of the "X" exhaust and what you can expect it to sound like (180 degree headers).

Super Chevy did a test with all three pipes,H pipe,X pipe and just straight 3".The X system was the smoothest and made the most HP.

I just did a motor swap and when I went for a new exhaust system I had the muffler shop fabricate an X pipe and put 40 series flowmasters behind it. Its a small block 350 this is the first time I've had this exhaust configuration and so far I like it.

My buddy just put one on his Mustang, we noticed it is a little quieter and will be going to the track friday. I'll post some times next week if you're interested. Its just a 302 in need of some mid range torque. Its gone a 12.15@113.5 about 3 weeks ago. The only other mod done to the car since we ran it before will be some drag struts, which should help it 60ft, but we expect to see some mph from the X-pipe. I'll let you know what it runs http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif

I think the site that Toby is referring to is: www.drgas.com (http://www.drgas.com) . This is where I bought my X pipe for my 69 SS. I just installed it last week and have'nt had much of a chance to drive it since then, but I can definitly tell you that I love the sound... very deep mellow rumble!

I have a homemade X-pipe on my 68. I installed it during a complete rebuild, so don't have a good before and after comparison. http://www.geocities.com/hrayhouston/exhaust.html

Do a search here and in "Engine and Drivetrain" and you'll find more info. When I did a search, I found a couple of interesting things that my current system seems to support.
1- The X pipe makes the exhaust note a little less deep, so get the deepest sounding mufflers you can to keep a deep exhaust sound.
2- The X pipe exhaust sound makes your engine sound like it is turning faster than it is. I didn't know this, and always worried that my tach didn't work right and that I was going to blow my engine - at six grand it sounds like it's turning seven plus. I learned this when I did a search here, and I now don't worry so much when it sounds like its going to explode.

i put a 3" dr gas x pipe on my car along with a full 3" exhaust with 3" tails. I have a 1970 chevelle with a 454 and i was tired of unbolting the pipes to get some real performance. Now i just leave it all in, full exhaust and I've run as close as .2 faster. My 60' times reduced to from 1.95 to 1.80. Pretty darn good for a full exhaust compared to an open loud exhaust. Improves the sleepr image.

take care
Rob

I have run the Dr Gas x pipe on a 350 for the last three years and am very pleased with it- real nice tone as compared to a conventional twin pipe setup

Firs of all Hi to eweryone, I'm new here.

I beleive the location of the x pipe or cros over pipe is very important. I recal reading somewhere that, pipe should be painted and after a hard drive wherever the burn is the location of the x or cros over pipe should be.

I run a 3 inch system with the x-pipe from dr. gas http://personal.clt.bellsouth.net/clt/m/g/mgervin/smilies/fart.gif and I like it. To the new person

Help me with this....

Where did you get this information? http://personal.clt.bellsouth.net/clt/m/g/mgervin/smilies/confusedbig.gif from Dr. gas? My kit came with the pipes already cut. All I needed to do was put the thing together and weld it.

Toby - actually practiced by some. It's a crayon type thing and where the markings stop burning is the spot to locate the H or X pipe into your existing system. Problem is it usually puts it in a bad spot. I think most try to put it where it is out of the way.

In your case I take it you bought a complete system from collectors to mufflers or something?

I installed the Dr Gas version in 3" inlet 2-1/2" outlet, it was also the less expensive I found. The sound is different to all my other friends Camaros. The "X" gave me some improvement in the low end torque and I don't know if it's reveing better now or is the sound but it climbs to high revs faster. If you wait a little you can hear my car in the signature address. I hear a little hickup on the recording but that was before I adjusted the Holley 600, had to open the secondaries a bit to compensate for the cam.

I used an H pipe cross over with 3" all the way back, becouse I wasn't sure about the $180 price tag for the DR gas X pipe. I notice an increase in low end and a real nice low tone through flowmasters on my 73 RS/Z28 with 350. Not real sure if it makes a $160 differace to go with the X pipe.

Hey ORENCH, what are your engine specs? That thing sounds good! And I love the howl that only the x-pipes can give.

Engine specs. Travis? Really nothing special, appart from the 280H Comp cam and 1.6 roller rockers, the 4 bolt 350 has all it's stock internals. External add ons, Hedman headers with 3" collectors and Flowmaster 2-1/2" exhaust system (40 series) from the "X" back to the tail pipes, HEI with Flame Thrower kit, RPM perf. man. and vac. secundaries Holley 600. For what it has, it's running OK, but I want to install a good set of heads in the future. X pipe sound, incomparable...

speedy, good call when your building your car with keeping the $$ down. I thought the same but I have worked over my wife enough to let me buy some extra goodies for my car. the x system was one of them.
