Steptoe Apr 9th, 09, 11:52 PM Come to car computer chips tbs etc to me just a bunch of junk to go wrong....
BUT I do know a carbureted engine has a small effective rpm range...TBS is monitored right thru the rpm range...better power better around town better open road...
If I had a clue where to start, I would go tbs...
If your car is working, dont fix what is not broke!!!
The reason I dont know, want to know about car computers and tbs is I work with networks every day...and when I knock off, I dont want to even see a computer...

speedfreek Apr 10th, 09, 03:10 PM I changed my 87 tbi 350 to a carb and it was incredible of the amount of hp that it gained. What I did was put on an early model edelbrock rpm intake. To do this you have to slot the two middle holes in the intake to get it to fit the late model heads. Or just buy the correct intake for it, it is a bit higher priced than the early model ones. You also need a regular hei distributor, that's it.
I have done this swap several times, it is very easy.
novaderrik Apr 10th, 09, 04:15 PM if everything is working properly, the TBI is just as good as a carb and will probably use less gas when you aren't playing around.
TBI motors like more timing- ignore the "0" setting on the underhood sticker and pull it ahead to about 10 or so.
they aren't that complicated- it's just a few sensors and a couple of injectors.
for about the cost of buying all the parts to change to a carb, you could replace all the sensors, rebuild the throttle body, and get a better chip for the computer.
JimM Apr 10th, 09, 04:34 PM Josh, while you may look at it now and say "I hate all this computer BS" look real close beofre you condemn. Computers can and do "Tune on the fly." The things you can do to improve the performance of your somewhat strangled 2bbl tbi are real similar to what you would do if it was a carbed system.
My list: 670cfm 454 tbi off a pickup in a junkyard for virtually nothing.
Holley manifold for 2bbl tbi, similar to edelbrocks performer.
Headers and a good exhaust system
custom chip with a good tune.
You will get as much of a performance increase as patrick did, will still be legal and will probably still pass emissions, and you'll get double the mileage he gets.
Lest you think I might not know where of I speak... pics of my "TBI" car below. 23 MPG on the highway, 12.87 @ 109 in the 1/4, and able to leap cross country any time I point her west.
of fer craps sake, my picture machine is broken... but she's a 68 vert with a numbers matching 383, holley 4bbl tbi, tko 5 speed. And all here will attest to her success.
Steptoe Apr 10th, 09, 10:45 PM Im glad Jim has turned up..
1/ go back thru some of his older posts on the subject..I do know enough to know when someone is not talking thru the hole in the head on his shoulders....Jim knows his stuff on the subject
2/I have a bro inlaw, orginally a autosparky, now CEO of a company that designs chips and stuff for high end machinery...he went up thru the company designing chips etc....I showed him some of Jims old posts charts etc...., and showed me 3 dimensional computer programs that do this stuff....He was impressed with what jim is doing, If he was a Kiwi most prob given him a job.
Sry Jim not a complement...dont give those...just called as I see it.
Vette468 Apr 11th, 09, 12:00 AM HEY guy if you want to put a carb on your car1.- you need to get a non computerized distributor,,2.carbs run on 5-7 psi of pressure so you need to either pull your pump out of your stock tank and run a low pressure.carb type pump...another way some people go is to run a regulator that will lower the pressure.... just get the right intake for your year of engine and your good.... no more computer put a BIG BLOCK IN IT EASY BOLT IN........check the third gen Forum ....
