: New best MPH, 4spd vs Auto

Finally got out to the track with the 4
spd. I don't have rims for my slicks, so I raced with my 275/60 radials. This was in my daily 67 Camaro. Here are the 5 best times:

60....1/8............1/4
2.47 8.897 88.39 13.285 112.827
2.23 8.560 88.67 12.946 112.774
2.23 8.529 88.95 12.912 112.588
2.26 8.548 88.79 12.925 112.962
2.21 8.582 88.13 12.979 112.706

I had to launch easy in 2nd, 1st is worthless. It spun enough everytime I shifted so I didn't bother powershifting. The best mph was with 38 total timing, the worst was with 35, but still less than .5mph. It also ran best with engine temp at 170.

My best with TH350, TCI Street Fighter and slicks is 12.10 @110.6, 1.66 60ft.

I'll have it back at the track in Jan. with slicks, then the comparison will be better.

383, Edel. RPM heads, 9.5:1, XE274, 1.6 rockers, Holley 750, RPM intake, 1 5/8 headers, 2.5 full Flowmaster exhaust. 4.11's. 87 octane.

try the 4 speed with slicks before switching back. not a fair comparison, especially since your launching in 2nd gear.

Yeah, yeah, rub it in. We've already had 5" of snow here, although it is gone now and was about 65 degrees today. It wont be much longer though and the cold will be here to stay.

I see you got a solid 2+ mph increase out of the deal...will we be seeing some high 11's in the near future?

I wouldn't waste time trying 4-spd w/slicks, it's gonna break something. Believe me, slicks will hook, and something will eventually break. I always bought plenty of U-joints as a fuse for the driveline, they're cheap!

Make up your mind as for what purpose your gonna use the car for, street or strip.
Street? keep the 4-spd, practice on speed shifting, no power shifting, lose too much rpm's. Track? use the A/T, it's more consistent.

My two cents...

I agree with Everett having run a number of 4spd drag cars with slicks. My fuse is different though! I always used good u-joints so that my 12 bolt became the weak link. Break tan axle, replace with hi perf, break the pinion, replace with hi-perf, break the carrier...... (The 9", F@*$'s only "better idea"!)

If your gonna drive it street, the 4spd is way more fun. If it's gonna be a racer, put the slush box back in!

How does your mph compare at the end of the 1/4? You should have a little better mph with the 4 speed because of the slip in the converter (unless it's a lock-up converter).

BTW, looks like a real nice combo, especially being able to run 87 octane http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif

Edit: OOPS, I meant to ask how your rpm's compare, not your mph (since you already indicated that). If your mph is higher with the 4 speed but the rpm is the same as before at the end of the 1/4 then the mph improvement would be due to eliminating the converter slippage.

Hi Lonnie, what were you running at super chevy last year, you were around 12.5's ? if I remember correctly.

Hey Travis, I'm thinking it should hit 11's pretty easy. Pretty sad, my daily is almost as fast as the street/strip.

The 4 spd definitly made the car quicker/faster. I gained a solid 2MPH with it. I will not be side stepping the clutch when I have the slicks on it. I'll only make a couple of passes. Then it is goodbye 4.11's, 3.08's will be going in. I hope I don't break anything, but if I do, that is the chance you take every time you drive a fast car hard. That's hot rodding.

Hey Jack, didn't see your post there. The best pass was a 12.38 @ 107 at Super Chevy, I did hit a couple of 12.50's. It was about 45 degrees hotter out, and traction wasn't perfect. The 12.10 @ 110 with the auto, was in cool weather. What have you been up to?

Hey Lonnie, long time no talk to.

Good times. I think with slicks you should be better with the 4 speed. Darn good automatic times though. Not to mention, looks awesome!

Thinking of swapping to the XE274 in my 383 versus the XE284.
How does it pull in your 383?

Hi Lonnie, time to pull the engine on my 67, bad oil leak from pan seal. So I need to talk to you about building a 383 !!

Hi Tracy, the 274 will probably work better for you in a heavy vehicle, have you taken it to the track yet?

Jack, give me a call or email.

Have you done any chassis mods for traction? You shouldn't have enough torque to cause 1st gear to be useless.

No, not yet. went all summer with other friends, just never got mine to the track after I got the slicks.
But plan on pulling the heads and having them re-done and possibly chaging cam to the XE274 while I'm at it.

I have a friend that worked all the bugs out on his '68 Camaro. On a 10" wheel ran a best of 10.12@ 137MPH a couple months ago.
Now that's what I'm talking about. http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif
Thanks for the feedback, great talking with you again!

C'mon now Tracy, you can't give times like that and not share the combo. http://www.camaros.net/forum/cool.gif

oger, 1st gear is indeed worthless with radials. Full throttle in 1st at any speed, the tires are smoking. With slicks on the other hand, 1st will be great. I have a mono leaf rear with slapper bars, with slicks and the auto, it hit a 1.66 60 with a dead hook. If I can get close to that with the stick I'll be happy.

The auto is out of my other car, I was just using it while I rebuilt the M20.

Don't know all the details, but it's:
'68 Camaro
3.55 gears
TCI Streetfighter stall
468BB
Lunati forged crank
Lunati forged rods
JE forged pistons
ported Edelbrock aluminum heads
Lunati roller camshaft(not sure of grind, but over .700 lift)
Team G intake
1" spacer
Holley 950HP carb
All MSD setup with NOS control
27" Hoosiers
180HP shot of NOS

We drove it to Tulsa, about 70 miles from here, ran low 11's on the motor and the 10.12 with the NOS, and ate dinner, and drove it home. http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif
