: Drag radial vs. rim width
RATified68ss Apr 10th, 09, 11:29 PM I currently have 275/60/15's on a 15x7 ralley wheels on the rear. They have been on the car for almost 15 years and have probably less thatn 10k miles on them. Well, it's time to replace them due to their age. I want to go with BFG drag radials. I'm just concerned whether it will be safe to run them on a 7" wheel. The car never sees the track (too far away). It is purely street driven. Or should I step up to an 8" wheel? I have never had a problem in 15 years, but I was just wondering if the wheel width should be addressed with the drag radial. If 8" is needed, what back spacing should I be looking at. As it is right now, the 7" fit perfectly, no rubbing. If I can pick up the 8" wheels used, is there a certain code on them that I need to look for to get the right back spacing? Any help would be much appreciated.

68rs406 Apr 11th, 09, 08:30 PM Good looking car! I love the color combo.
The drag radials are going to fit about the same as what you have now, maybe a little more of a "ballon" look to them because I think the true dimension of the drag radial section width is wider, but not much.
I have them on a 15X8, 4.5" backspace ralley and they fit great, I would personally not go smaller on the wheel, but they would work I think, the tire will probably not fit as well as it should and have more of a 'crown' to it though. I know they say 7.5"-9" wheel for that tire, but I doubt it would comprimise safety with a 7".

I would have to ask why a drag radial if you don't race ? They will not last as long, cost more, and if you get caught in the rain they can be very scary.
Microgiant Apr 12th, 09, 07:26 AM With stock GM I think the 15x8 ralleys are 4" backspace so they stick out a bit far. You might want to get some aftermarket wheels.

JimM Apr 12th, 09, 07:44 AM Very cool list!
But why no newer (70's) stuff on it?
I always thought there was a 15 x 8 4 1/2" bs wheel used on Monte Carlo's in the 70's....

Thank you for all the replies, gentlemen. The reason for a drag radial is the car has a Gen V 502 (440hp, 515ft-lbs rating). It produces gobs of torque off idle. It doesn't take much throttle to start the tires spinning. I wanted a tire that would keep somewhat of a 'stock' look with a little more bite. I've put a whopping 10k miles (if that) in 15 years on the set that's on there now, so service length isn't really a concern. As far as rain, c'mon! It's California! J/K I don't drive the car if there is a cloud in the sky anyhow. I did once and of course it rained. Currie 9" with a Trak-Lok meant I was looking out the side windows more that the front.
DOUG G Apr 12th, 09, 10:22 AM Well with the torque of the 502 I doubt the BFG DR will be much if any better but I guess it couldn't hurt.
