I've got a79 camaro with a stock rear end. I believe its 8.5. I'm junking a 86 Ford F150,its ate up with rust. Should I keep the rear from truck for future use in camaro. Or, should I sell 9" to racer some where and beef up the stock rear in camaro. I bet I'd be farther ahead to keep it GM. What do you think?

are you sure it's a 9" in that truck? sometime in the mid 80's, Ford started switching over to the 8.8 in the 1/2 ton trucks. i parted out an 85 a few years ago that had the 8.8.

i ran a stock 10 bolt in by 71 camaro for years 4.88 gears trans brake the works. ran 10.90s never could break it. unless you are making crazy power that ten bolt will be just fine. install a new clutch pack and get with it.

There is a very good chance you have the 8.8" rear end.
In any case, it would still have to be narrowed, and the suspension brackets and stuff welded on to the ford housing. IMO it isn't worth the effort to pull it off the truck, unless you are going to drop it into another ford truck.

Beef up the 10 bolt.
New after market axles, 30 spline, and C-Clip eliminators will do wonders for strength.
Have the axle tubes PROPERLY welded to the housing too.

I agree with the other posts: you might have a Ford 8.8 rear end. In either case, you'd probably be better off selling the rear to a Ford guy and building the Chevy 10-bolt rather than trying to cut and weld the Ford to fit under your Camaro. From what I've read, the Chevy rears also have a weight advantage. Reducing unsprung weight is generally a good thing. The only real advantage I can see to the Ford 9" is a better gear selection. I really don't change the gear ratios once I figure out what I want, and having to choose between 3.55s and 3.60s would really just mess with my head.

Another advantage of the 9" is the fact that gear changes can be achieved without having to remove the entire rear end from the car........unbolt and partially remove the axles from the housing, remove & replace the center section, reinstall axles and gear oil......done!!!!!

The only real advantage I can see to the Ford 9" is a better gear selection.
And more gear contact which makes it stronger.
And the axle configuration won't let the wheel fly off if the axle breaks inside the tubes.
And better pinion support for added strength.
