Hi all.

There must be lots of big blocks in 1st gens with AFR heads. What headers fit?

I recently installed a pair of AFR 305 heads on a 454 in my 69 camaro.
It is drag race only - set up for 1/8 mile. It still has factory steering setup. I currently have a set of hooker #2457 headers with 2 inch primaries that I used with the old engine combo but they have some issues when bolted to the AFR heads - I have a problem with spark plug clearance on cylinders 2,4 and 5. It is worst on 2 and 5.

I would like to go to 2 1/8 primaries.
Can anyone help with advice on headers that will fit?

I am in Australia and nobody here can help me. Thanks.

John

I would highly recommend Lemon Headers. From what ive read and have seen they fit awesome.. I currently am running Hooker Super Comps on my BBC with Brodix Race Rites heads but the exhaust ports are in the same location as stock iron heads, even so i still had to grind on the headers flanges to clear my ARP head bolts.

I second the lemons. Just got mine last week and easy access to plugs, room for Z bar clutch, etc. Expensive but mine is a tall deck and nearly had to get these . If your AFR heads have raised exhaust ports you're in the same boat as me. I got the 2 1/8 diameter tubes and had them set up for V clamp and had them weld in a O2 bung in case I decide to run air/fuel meter.

Lemons Headers #BBPT-600. 2 1/4" Tubes
World Products "Merlin" BBC Raised Exhaust Ports.
Stock front subframe and power steering.
Excellent spark plug access.

The Lemon headers are beautiful but how do you get to plugs 5 & 7? Assume there is more access than picture would imply.

Not sure if this helps, but running the 2455 Hookers in my 69 chevelle with AFR 305's also. But, I had the heads angle milled to 105cc, which brings the exh port down a bit. Only plug that's tough to get to is 6 and 8, with 6 being the real PIA. I have to use a cut down socket and wrench. Other than that, the fit is great. Ground clearance sucks though...I like the way those lemons tuck up nice and tight, but I think they a 3-4x the price of these. Honestly, my old 2" Hedman 66002(?) fit REAL good and had excellent clearance...shoulda got another pair of them.

The #5 just use the socket from above and an open 5/8 wrench, the #7 use a socket and small socket wrench but from under the car... Thank god for my lift. My Hooker supper comps are the same design as the Lemons but mine doesn't have the nice ground clearance as the Lemons do.

Going 2 1/8" primaries will make it worse.

I have 2 1/8 Lemons but I have a DSE sub. Still, the plugs are very accessible.

2457 are Hooker comp headers
Hookers Super Comp will fit better
2205 -2"
2285 -2-1/8 "

2205's on my 468 with AFR 305's. Check out the vids, plenty of clearance under the front tires! LOL

With the wheels up you have lots of ground clearance on the headers.

Being street/strip, do you have power steering? Assume you are using BB frame mounts?

No PS and using BBC mounts.
