View Full Version : 1969 L89 Camaro Pro Touring Build
ClassicCarStudio Apr 14th, 09, 01:22 PM I'm new to the site and after some prodding from John with Clean Cut Creations, I joined so that we could post some photos of a retro-mod conversion we are performing on a gorgeous 1969 Camaro SS equipped with an L89 motor, and 4 speed M22 rock crusher transmission. After much debate, my client decided to stick with the current drive train which and do some tasty upgrades to the suspension and the brakes. The result will be a sort of "best of the old, best of the new" set up that should definately turn some heads.
I'll link to some photos later this week that we took before any of the mods were completed and then post our progress.
Here's the current upgrades that we've selected for the car:
DSE Hydroformed Subframe and suspension
• Hydroformed Framerails
• Stamped Crossmembers
• Tubular Upper and Lower Control Arms
• Coilover Shocks for Subframe with "Detroit
Tuned" valving
• Coilover Spring
• Power Rack and Pinion Steering
• Splined Sway Bar
• C6 Steering Knuckles and Bearing Packs
DSE QuadraLink rear supension
Ford 9" rear end with aluminum center section
Baer 6 Piston Aluminum Calipers and 14" rotors
Mini Tub and Subframe connectors
Vintage AC with black front runner kit

Eric Kammerer Apr 14th, 09, 03:21 PM Welcome to TC Noah! It looks like you are trying to link directly to photos on your computer, which does not work here. You can host them someplace free like Photobucket and then use the IMG coding to bring it up here, or you can become a paying site member and get photo posting privledges.
Sounds like a great project, looking forward to seeing it! :)

ClassicCarStudio Apr 16th, 09, 09:21 AM sorry about the double post! More photos to come later!
98blackburb Apr 16th, 09, 09:24 AM Sweet, keep the pic's flowing. Did you guys have a 69 Hugger Orange awhile back ? I loved that car.
ClassicCarStudio Apr 16th, 09, 10:37 AM We did have a very nicely restored Hugger Orange Z28 RS with a snowflake intake and dual matched carbs. If I recall correctly, she was a matching numbers Norwood build, but we didn't have dealer documentation on dual carb set up. Gorgeous!
AJSZR2326 Apr 16th, 09, 11:48 AM that car looks great the way it was, why are you changing it to make a pro touring car does it not handle well as is?
ClassicCarStudio Apr 16th, 09, 12:29 PM The Camaro could not drive any better for an "original" type restoration but my client is looking to take the handling and braking to the next performance level. I'm glad he is keeping the L89 motor because it runs beautifully!
The car originated at an SS Camaro, however, it was not originally equipped with the L89 motor. Many people will look at it and say, "why change anything?" but because the car is a clone of an L89 car and not a documented original car, my customer saw it as a great starting place for a beautiful retro mod car.

69z28freak Apr 16th, 09, 05:28 PM Nice car, but still would have been nice as original as well. If I was going to do a protouring car I would try to use a base car since normally they seem to get heavily modified. Just seems like a shame to me cut up original Z28's, SS's etc. But that's just me. I am probably just jealous that I don't have the money to spend on a car like that. I couldn't even afford the car the way it was too start with. But damn that was a fine looking car. I wish I had it instead of my Titanic!
ClassicCarStudio Apr 17th, 09, 02:45 PM That was the Z28. Gorgeous car!
ClassicCarStudio Apr 20th, 09, 09:14 AM After drilling out all of the spot welds, we removed the original wheel wells

Pro-Street69Camaro468 Apr 20th, 09, 06:58 PM I 'm guessing we re going to mini-tub keep us posted looking good so far....
RATHOWSE Apr 20th, 09, 08:24 PM This is both painful and exciting to watch:noway::yes: I am torn yet I love it. I think I will call Dr. Phil for some feel good talk:thumbsup:
rafbody Apr 20th, 09, 10:07 PM Me too. It is sometimes hard to see what happens to a car to make it what the owner wants. A beautiful car will be transformed into a beautiful car with a totally different attitude. (Attitude meaning the look of the car) Nice work, keep the pictures coming.
ClassicCarStudio Apr 21st, 09, 03:07 PM I 'm guessing we re going to mini-tub keep us posted looking good so far....
You've got that right! The mini tubs require that we modify the the rear sub-frame. Here is a photo of some of the fabrication work with 1/8th inch steel.http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/ww256/CCStudiophotos/IMG_7520.jpg (http://www.camaros.net/forums/%5BIMG%5Dhttp://i725.photobucket.com/albums/ww256/CCStudiophotos/IMG_7520.jpg%5B/IMG%5D)
ClassicCarStudio Apr 21st, 09, 03:11 PM The very, very nice DSE front sub-frame arrived today and here is a photo. This is the 4th GM car we've done in the past few months that has received coil over suspensions from DSE and we've been very happy with the "Made in the USA" quality, and awesome customer service!

My client struggled with the idea of modifying this car as well. Before we start any projects I create a "story board" if you will of how the project will progress and the end result we are looking for. This is key in terms of both sticking closely to a time line and producing the desired. We changed the plan is this one about 20 times...:)
zman1969 May 28th, 09, 07:26 AM Back about 20 years ago I sold my 70 SS350 camaro 2 owner car because I didnt want to modify it. still to this day im glad I didn't , I feel we owe some heritage to the survivor cars not to, but cant say your cutting it up either nice looking ride and nice plans.

You cannot go wrong with DSE!!!:bow:
I assume you are using the DSE quadra-link rear end as well and DSE mini tubs?
Keep us posted please.:thumbsup::beers:
67'540cu Aug 18th, 09, 11:29 PM Great build, but unfortunately breaking my heart....:pout:
Building trends come and go, (Pro Touring, Pro Street tec...) But years from now, original will be the rarest and most desired. But clean work though.
Dayton68Z28 Aug 19th, 09, 10:08 AM This is a hard thread to watch.
If I were married to Jennifer Aniston, the last thing I would do is haul her into the plastic surgeon to make her look/ride different.:D

I don't think it was a orig L89 car.
cowboybob Aug 20th, 09, 08:46 AM Based on the build specs (old school drivetrain with modern suspension) I would consider this to be a hybrid Restomod / Pro-Touring car. Regardless of how its classified...I love it! In fact, my build is following along the same lines (L78, TH400, upgraded suspension, mini tubs, etc.).
I can't wait to see the car finished...just wish that there were more build updates.
69z28freak Aug 20th, 09, 05:38 PM Hey how much for that sweet looking sub frame set up?
tones2SS Aug 21st, 09, 04:12 PM Any updates on this bad boy?
NvrEnough67s Sep 22nd, 09, 05:22 PM Sooo...
Any thoughts on changes to the motor?...Gonna go with a newer Fuel Injection setup, maybe one of those Carb/injections systems from F.A.S.T. that still "look" like a carb but offer some FI bennies?...That woiuld be cool...
Geeeze...just the mention of "L89" makes my pants fit different...
Whatever the plan, neat buikd and thanks for sharing with us...

PBT on both sides of the firewall? Is that "Pro-touring"?
69z28freak Sep 22nd, 09, 09:49 PM Good call Mark. I was asking the same thing myself.

I just don't see how it can be pro-touring with an L89 and M22 tranny. I'm not bashing the car, just not sure about the direction it's heading based on what I've been studying about pro-touring. Call it what you want though, kick ass car to say the least.
69z28freak Sep 22nd, 09, 10:47 PM Looks pretty stock to me. And if it was me I would leave it like it is, cause it looks pretty fine as is. But then again I love pure stock muscle. The more original and vintage the better. Anyone can build whatever they want, but it takes true appreciation to preserve and respect a classic. Call me old fashioned or don't call me at all.

I don't think Pro-Touring will die like pro-street did. why does it hurt to make updates if they're not sawzall cut fender wells -IE butcher jobs and they're done right like this? the Factory made "updates" like adding bigger V-8s and even Big Blocks. They just had no need for bigger tires because they hadn't been made yet - time marches forward- done right- wont go out of style!
Jarcaines Sep 28th, 09, 02:46 PM Why don't you guys read the whole thread before you post?
This is not an original L89 car and they are totally redoing the suspension and brakes. It WILL BE "pro-touring".
AutoRodTechnologies Oct 4th, 09, 05:30 PM More pics please!!!
Love pro-touring styled cars!!
