I have a 454 that has a chip in the block near one of the oil galleries. It is the one closest to the drivers side motor mount. Oil is leaking there when the engine is running. The guy at the machine shop wants to pull the motor, dip the block and weld it. I'm going to try and clean it up and apply some JB Weld to it to see if that will hold. Any ideas? He said that it will cost around $700-$800 to have the motor worked. Should I look for a new block?

Is $7-800 a reasonable price to pull the motor, strip it down, dip the block, weld it and then re-assemble?

RS, (wish you guys would use your real names)
Without actually looking at the "chip" its hard to say. I wonder if it is a small casting imperfection, if so could it be drilled and tapped for a small pipe plug, or even a very small, short, machine screw ? I have done those types of repairs without taking a motor apart and never had any problems. If you are very carefull drilling and tapping, and use the shop vac real often to pull the chips out, it can be done. There are also small, threaded, tapered pins used to repair cracks that could be used.
Just a suggestion, but I cannot see the problem, so it might not be a feasable repair. Any way to send a digital picture so I can see it ?

Well, I am going to try the JB Weld trick. I ground it down and cleaned it up. It looks like the oil is coming from around that oil gallery. The chunk that is missing exposed some threads of the plug that screws in there. I doubt that I could even get a camera in there to take a picture so that won't work. I just covered it up with the JB Weld. I should know tomorrow if it is leaking or not. If I can get it to hold for the summer, I will make it a winter project to have the block welded. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
