I found 462 heads that were advertised as rebuilt, with hardened seats, guy let them sit in garage for 20 years but kept lubricated with WD 40.
What I found was a 3890462 and a 3917291 one each. Can I use these together as I wanted to run unleaded gas. I didn't find a place to mount the alternator bracket either - no holes. Cheap price. $100
Please help.

$100 is cheap
If the runners are the same size, buy them, it is imperative that they are the same size, as well as the combustion chambers.

I ran a 461 and a 462 head without issues. The combustion chamber 'should' be the same size unless one is a very early production head and the other isn't. If you need the accessory holes you're screwed though. At $100 you should be able to get your money back out of them.

If the combustion chambers are the same size your good to go "the engine wouldnt know any different,, with a slight port difference, I knew a guy with a BIG BLOCK CHEVY.that had a OVAL PORT and a SQUARE PORT...it ran FINE "GHETTO" but fine....

Guys, I have another question. First, these heads are going on a 1st gen 350 v8 with a mild cam. The 462 heads have Z28 springs, and pinned studs so what does that mean? And, I was also planning on using summit 1.6 roller rocker arms, will this be ok? The heads were rebuilt about 1500 miles ago.

Hardened seats are kind of an old wives tale. They are really only needed if they are used for pulling a trailer etc. (from what I have been told) The heads are pre-69 so no, they don't have bolt holes. If your car is a 67 as your user name implies, you don't need the bolt holes unless your car was converted in the last 40 years. There are only a few good set ups that may require 1.6 rockers. Sometimes they help, usually they don't. Pinning the rocker arm studs is a cheap way to keep the studs from pulling out, screw in studs are better, but neither is really needed for a mild 350. I have a set of 461's (almost identical to the 462's) on my car and I am not a fan of them. The intake ports are only about 155 cc's and would only flow well on a mild 327 or 350. I would take that $100 and the $150 + that you were going to waste on 1.6 roller rockers, and invest in some better heads. If you are just building a "shade tree" engine... then go ahead.

I have the original heads too, but I wanted to run unleaded and I thought I could find some camel backs that have hardened seats already in rebuilt heads.
Now I'm going to look at another set and want to know what to look for, I'm new to this and need any advice. He said on the phone the valves were darkened but they are used. Are there any obvious red flags I should be aware of. I'm trying to maintain the original look, that's why I'm not investing in a new set of high perf aluminum heads.
Your comments and opinions are appreciated. Thanks, Greg

My friend has pulled apart SBC engines w/a 76 CC head on one side & on the other side a 64 CC head,,guess what ,,,those engines ran fine.

Also,,, my same friend used to race in stock car racing,he would have on one side of a SBC engine fully ported production 202's in 160 ex cylinder head & on the other side a "spec" head for the class he was in.

When he would win races, the manditory tare down would require one cylinder head removed & the intake manifold,,,,,well he would remove the stock spec head & stock intake to the judges & it would pass of course because he would bring the "stock/spec" parts to the judges.

BTW,with a fully ported head on one side of the SBC & the other side being a stock head, he said his engine ran good also. He won!!!

I am not saying you should do this, just some conversation info.

The only problems would be your accessory holes and you may be nearing the limit on those Z28 springs with 1.6 rockers, depending on how much lift your cam has. They're good to about .480-.500 lift depending on which manufacturer you listen to.

A rebuilt set of double humps with Z28 springs, pinned studs and hardened seats for $100 is a great deal as long as there aren't any hidden problems like cracks or crappy 'modifications' done by previous owners in the last 40 years.

What heads came off your engine? Like was previously stated, you don't need hardened seats for occasional driving if that's the only reason you're looking for heads.

from experience from running a 461/462 head with a 291 on the passenger side. The engine got hot and eventually exhausted itself and finally cracked the 291 head. After much research I have found you can run different head casting numbers as long as the head surfaces all match. The runners flow about the same, the combustion chamber is the same the deck surface is the same, valves are same size and position, etc, etc, etc. What Im saying is you cant have one head flow 145cfm and a 58cc chamber then have the other head flow 165 with a 62cc chamber. It will get hot and eventually crack.

I think you had some other problem with the 291 head.

Well John, both heads came built and fresh from the machine shop. However I dont think he knew a 13 yr old kid was going to install them on the same motor. And it was the block that cracked, not the head. Used the heads for another motor and it kept getting hot, thought that one of the heads was cracked and swapped both out for 882 heads and the engine quit getting hot. After the heads were checked, they were found to be in great shape.

Thanks guys for your help. The heads ended up not having the hardened seats, I wanted to run unleaded so I passed on them. So I'll close this chapter for now.
