View Full Version : New 68 Owner
OstOgBajer Apr 15th, 09, 09:43 AM Noticed the "Welcome" forum, so thought I'd say hi. Bought a 68 Camaro a month ago, and the day I drove it home a rocker arm stud broke. Just my luck, this was the day after I totaled my Ducati in a hit-and-run. Ah well, I figured it could use a bit more power so I put a nice trick-flow top end setup on it. Next job is to get a Magnaflow exhaust system installed then a TKO600, and at some point a brake conversion and new wheels/tires.
Currently has a TH350 with 4.11 gears and it gets annoying driving it on the highway. Anyway, here's some pics...

KEN F '68' Apr 15th, 09, 10:22 AM Welcome to the site Brian, from a fellow '68'er. This is a great place to learn and share information, lots of knowledge from good people. Welcome aboard!!!

I don't see an annoyance.........
vjp819 Apr 15th, 09, 02:56 PM Welcome Brian. Sure is a nice looking car, and I agree with the others as it being the best year. I just made a year restoring mine. Hope to have it on the road by summer. I've had mine for over 25 years but it was set up in the shop for the past 17. It was time to give her a new life.

Great how all these 68's are joining

I meant the highway RPMs are annoying with those gears. Right now I "cruise" at 3500-4000 RPM. The car is only fun from stoplight to stoplight right now. Or when being worked on in the garage :D So much to do, so little time and money.
Thanks for the compliments. I think 68 is the best year too. I like that they got rid of the vent windows, but kept the nice classic dash. Despite the 69's good looks on the outside, I really don't care for the dash or instrument cluster at all. I'm torn on the 68 and 69 grills... they both have their charm. I LOVE the 69 RS grill though...
zlek131 Apr 15th, 09, 09:36 PM Welcome to the site. Get that 350 swapped out for a 700R4 and keep those 4.11 You'll have best of both worlds!

I'm pretty set on the TKO. The TKO 600 with .64 overdrive paired with 3.73 rear gears, plus the fun of shifting will make me very happy. I'll have 10.7:1 overall ratio in first, compared to my current 10.3:1 which is already plenty. And the .64 OD with 3.73s will have me cruising at 2200 RPM at 70 mph, allowing me to cruise at "normal" highway speeds just fine as well (normal here is at least 80). Just have to wait a while before such a big purchase... :-(
The 700R4 would probably be cheaper, but not really what I want. I'll leave the automatics for my daily drivers.
zlek131 Apr 15th, 09, 10:09 PM 3.73 is great gear. That's what I am about to bolt up this weekend. Yes, something about rolling your own gears that we all love! Sounds like you'll have a nice setup. I went from a 350 to a 700R4 that's built up drastically and love it. Glove box pops open when it shifts into 2nd but that can get annoying at times too...maybe sometime down the road there is a nice 5 speed in sight for me as well.

Yeah, well my glovebox pops open randomly when cruising... so... uh... yeah!
Worst latch design ever. Wouldn't open without prying with insane force, so I bend the latch a little and now it randomly falls open.
zlek131 Apr 15th, 09, 10:32 PM It wouldn't be a first gen if it didn't do that. Got to love it!
