I can now say this is the first. I just got a 67 Camaro and the alt. has one wire, going to the + on the battery, that is it? I can't wait to find more, I can see this is the first stop to the nightmare. More fun to follow :hurray:

sorry should have explained better, I have 2 wires coming from my battery (both 2ga) 1 is going to the alt. and the other is going to the starter. No other wires on the alt. just the 1 from the battery

OK, you're going to explain even more.

There should be two fat cables from the battery (OE is 6 gage, but you say you have 4 gage, OK). The fat lead from the postive terminal on the battery should go to the big lug on the starter, and the fat lead from the negative terminal on the battery should go to ground on the engine block. I have not had a 67 in more than 20 years, but because the alternator should be on the driver side, I believe 67 and 68 small blocks both do ground to a bolt on the block side. Because 69s have the alternator on the passenger side, the negative cable did bolt to the top of the alternator bracket on the small blocks.

Then, there should be a smaller lead off the positive cable that goes to the junction block behind the battery, and from there over to the voltage regulator on the driver side rad support, before coming back over to the alternator.

So what it it that you need to know? To help we need more info, like what exactly you are asking, what setup you have (which series alternator, which side it's mounted on, internal or external regulated, etc.). Pics are almost always a plus :)

...the alt. has one wire, going to the + on the battery...

Sounds like they may have converted it to a one wire alternator. Check to see if you have a plug on the alternator with paralell connections aligned like this ' || ' or like this ' -- '. If you find such a connection, look closely at it to see if the pins are shorted together. Recently there was a post with a picture showing a ' --' connection with a shorting bridge connected between. You might search for recent 'alternator' posts to find the image. Let us know what terminal arrangement you have and if it's shorted.

One wire alternators work fine. Personally I prefer a three wire setup because it gives you the option of remote voltage sensing and preserves the GEN lamp function. But technically a one wire setup is OK.

Heck, if you want a three wire one I just bought a 105A one wire alt for mine. I'd been running the old one as a one wire anyways.

By the way, if you consider that a "nightmare" then you'd better never look underneath my dash. I guarantee you'd either sh!t yourself or have a heart attack. Or both.

If you are just starting off with your 67 and not worried about originality, go with Eric's suggestion. MAD electrical. Get the NEW SYSTEM. Read the other recent post on MAD elec. Your cars wiring will love you for it. I know mine did.
