Im in the process of rewiring my 67. I'm to the point where I need to wire up the neutral safety switch. My question is on a 67 with a turbo 350 is the neutral safety switch and reverse light switch one in the same? I took apart the center console and I have some sort of switch attatched to the shifter mechanism. It has two flat blades to connect the wires to. Im just not sure about what exactly this switch is. When I look up a neutral safety switch at Ricks first gen it looks nothing like what I have. Any ideas.

Thanks

Yes, the switch on the shifter inside the console is both (reverse lights and neutral safety). The pick you are looking at may be generic hence the differences. Check out these two threads as they should help you out a lot:

There is one more thread that I used in the past but I can't find it. I do have a printout of the picture that's on the thread as well as the link to the picture but not the thread. The picture itself is included below and on my printout that I have in front of me, I hand wrote the following:
4-Purple/White Stripe
3-Purple
2-Light Green
1-Pink

Hope this helps.

Maybe one of the admins can cross reference the picture id to the original thread.

Which shifter do you have? Do you have the OE 67 Camaro floor shifter that mounts through the floor and operates a rod linkage underneath to the trans selector lever? Or do you have something else? The NSS/reverse light switch Rick's shows for 67 floor shift cars looks like what I recall, with the four terminals riveted/affixed to the switch body, and wires going to a four place plug.

The pic and threads above mostly discuss the 68-69 style horseshoe/staple shifter, and the NSS is a little different on those.

AAW makes a 67 style switch that works for cars converted to TH350, but still using the OE Powerglide floor shifter. You can always call AAW (800-482-WIRE), select the dial-by-name function, and punch in "B-o-c-k". This will get you to Donny Bock, who is now in R&D but has foregotten more about GM wiring systems than many of us will ever know.

I am looking at the 67 NSS from Rick's and it does look slightly different than the 68 but conceptually it looks the same. It also appears to have the same four wires going in. Can you post a pic of the NSS in your car that you're looking at? Also, as already asked, what shifter does your car have?

Ok guys I screwed up, went back out to double check my switch and it does have four prongs on it. It does look identical to the pic that zlek131 posted. I took a couple of pics that I would like to post. Can anyone tell me how to post them.

Yes, looks like the same switch as the 68/69 with the horseshoe/staple shifter. So back to the issue. You need to know how to wire it, right? I see a couple non original green wires coming in that are connected to prongs #3 and #4 on the switch per the above pic I posted earlier. Normally this switch is serviced via a console harness which then plugs into the main dash harness. I would recommend getting this harness if you do not already have it (check under the console to make sure it's not tucked away or somehow connected to the green wires). If you don’t have the console harness and are not going to get one and just want to get the reverse lights working then trace hose two home made green wires as they should run out and connect directly to a dash harness or its plug . Find that. They should be connected to the purple and purple/white wires. This is what makes you car start in Park and Neutral but not the other gears. If you disconnect them the car won't start, period. If you take them of the switch prongs and connect them directly to each other, the car will start in any gear (that's how my car was before I changed it, not a good idea). The other two prongs (#1 and #2) on the switch should be connected to the pink and light-green wires on the main dash harness respectively. These two control your backup lights. Make that connection and your reverse lights should start working assuming no other issues. If you get the console harness and do it right you will also get the option to have shifter illumination lights (nice at night) and the rear console curtsey light. Let me know if you need more help. Glad to help as I’ve been down that exact road.

Zlek131.... Thanks for the help. I'm sure once I get working on it again things will make alot more sense. Thanks again.

How did you guys route the new wires to the switch. I haven't gone back to work on it yet. I did go back out to take a quick look and it seems like the existing wire runs through the floor under the car then back in behind the dash. Is that right?

The wiring is part of the console harness.
You can see the connector with all the wires in this picture.
The harness runs inside the lower console on a 68-9.

Mine is alittle different. I have a harness running to console for the rear courtsey lights (orange and white) and the gear selector lights; this harness runs to the front of the console and the connector is just hanging loose out of the front of the console. The two green wires going to the neutral safety switch are run seperatly to under the dash. I haven't been able to track the green wires yet to determine if it runs under the carpet or under the floor board.
