View Full Version : 69 sale price
Don K 70 Apr 22nd, 09, 09:03 PM Hey guys. I'm a classic Chevy fan looking for some advise. I love Camaros but I also love Chevelles and I own a 1970 Chevelle Malibu that I've had for 7 years. I was at my grandparents house today and they want to sell their 69 Camaro (instead of just giving it to me) but they are not sure what a good asking price for it would be and neither do I. It may be hard to get good feedback without pictures but I will describe it as best as I can. I will get photos this weekend and post them up if that would help anyone out. I was wondering what you guys would suggest what a fair price would be for this car. Ok, its a '69 (not an SS or Z28, also has no spoiler) with a stock 327 (2 bbl.). Column shift automatic with a powerglide. The car is dark green with green interior (bucket seats). The car has somewhere around 80,000 miles on it and the engine has been rebuilt a few years ago and also repainted. The body looks good, and as far as I know, theres no filler in it. If it were wheeled out, I think it would look awesome. The only bit of rust visible is some very small rust spots on the rocker panels. The weatherstripping looks decent and the chrome is in pretty good chape. The engine compartment could use some TLC. With a couple Saturday afternoons and a few part replacements (i.e. tune up, valve covers, air cleaner) I think the engine would look pretty clean. The interior is in real good shape aside from one seam split in the driver's side head rest. The car has Cragar SS wheels on it that are a little rusty. I'm not sure if some chrome polish and steel wool would take car of it or not. I would guess that some of the rust spots are probably there to stay, but I'm not positive. I should mention that this car sits in a barn for probably 360 days out of the year. My grandpa pulls it out in the summer once in a while to wash it & go "blow the carbon out of the exhaust" (as he likes to say) but other than that it just sits. I know if it were my car, I could have it looking pretty good with a couple hundred dollars and a few hours of my spare time. I store my car in their barn next to this car and some random passerby stopped in to see if they were for sale. My car is definitely not for sale but the guy offered them $4500 and they turned it down. It sounded like they were expecting more like $6000 for the car and I'm not sure what amount of money would be reasonable. If you guys could tell me what you think, I'd really appreciate it. If you would rather see some pics before you give me some feedback, I can get some this weekend and at least I'll already have the description posted. Please let me know. Thanks.
joesattitude Apr 22nd, 09, 09:30 PM sounds like a deal at $6000
travlinz28 Apr 22nd, 09, 10:36 PM Dan,
Welcome to the site. The way you describe the car it sounds like a pretty easy 10K to me. Pictures would certainly help but a very low mileage, very original car is worth much more than 6K unless it has a lot of rust issues.
Cyclopsracer Apr 22nd, 09, 10:57 PM 10 -12k
SPARKY69 Apr 23rd, 09, 05:03 AM welcome to team camaro!!!!!!!!!!!!! sounds like a 9-11k car!!!
MichiganMan Apr 23rd, 09, 05:13 AM welcome to team camaro.. sounds like you need to spend more time at the grandparents house maybe doing the yard work, home repairs more often. some detailed pics would be helpful
Don K 70 Apr 23rd, 09, 07:05 AM Thanks for the help guys. I'll be over there again this weekend and I will certainly get some good photos for you guys to see. Talk to you soon!
clill Apr 23rd, 09, 07:45 AM Somewhere between 10-15K depending on the condition...
okiemark Apr 23rd, 09, 08:50 AM wow, the price keeps going up with every post! I'm a BIG fan of original cars; especially if you know all the history. As I've stated before, there's gonna come a day when original stuff is at a premium. It gets back to what "collectable" is all about... how many "Z-28 clones" do we need in this world. Also: do not put a spoiler on that car! I'd pay $12,000 if in the market.
thorpe67RS Apr 23rd, 09, 08:57 AM I agree with everyones assesment on what its worth. No matter how ya slice it 6k is a steal based on your description. Which is good cause I would hope you could get it for less than what its really worth considering its your grandparents. :)
Are your Grandparents the original owners? If so that makes it even better. Not to mention that if you bought it its still technically a one owner family car.
98blackburb Apr 23rd, 09, 10:57 AM Are they original owners ? If not ,if it were my grandparents car being a 69 is worth more to me than other 69's to keep it in the family.I talked to my son and told him I plan on passing down my car to him when I'm too old to drive only if he were to do the same to his son or daughter. His eyes watered up and he told me yes. That would be a cool thing to have your grandparent's car and a 69 WOW!
camaro6769 Apr 23rd, 09, 11:47 AM I think anyone and everyone would pay $6,000 for that car! It's a steal at that price! $9,000.00 would be a fair price. In my opinion, anything above $9,000, would require finding a person who appreciates the originality of the car, and then you might be able to get up to $15,000. The options aren't that desirable to me personally, and I wouldn't be willing to go much over $9000.00. Knowing that it hasn't been moved much means it is probably going to need a lot of mechanical refreshing and so forth. Just my personal opinion.
Don K 70 Apr 23rd, 09, 06:00 PM Hey guys, I got some additional information. I just got off the phone with my grandma and they are not the original owners of the car, nor do they have the build sheets, unfortunately. She said she had purchased a Camaro in "69 brand new but it was totaled in an accident and they bought that one used. She didn't remeber the exact year but said they've had it "forever" so I would say its very possible that they are the 2nd owners of the car. I wish they had the build sheets too, but maybe they're hidden somewhere. Heres a quick story that I think you guys will enjoy. When I bought my Chevelle, the owner couldn't produce the build sheets so I figured I would never have them. About 2 years ago I had pulled the rear seat out and under the seat I found 2 original build sheets for the car. Why they were there, I don't know but I was really excited that I had them.
skipdaddie Apr 24th, 09, 12:51 PM I was the one that offered your grandfather $4500 for the green Camaro. You guys all ruined my deal.
Don K 70 Apr 24th, 09, 03:35 PM Are you serious, Skip? Were you really the person that made them that offer?
69SS 350 5 Speed Apr 24th, 09, 03:56 PM If I were you, I would be at my grqandparents house doing the lawn, cleaning the house, doing the grocery shopping and anything else that I could think of. After all, regardless of the car they are your grandparents and you are supposed to take care of them if you live close enough to them.

thorpe67RS Apr 24th, 09, 07:55 PM Are you serious, Skip? Were you really the person that made them that offer?
He's just messing with you.
And the buildsheet really isnt all that important with this car being that its a base Camaro. Still, with that said...buy it now!
Don K 70 Apr 26th, 09, 06:19 PM Ok guys. I took some photographs yesterday. Please take a look and tell me what you think a fair asking price would be for this car.

Don K 70 Apr 26th, 09, 06:22 PM Ok, evidently the photos didn't upload correctly. The photos of the car can be seen here. Let me know what you think. http://www.flickr.com/photos/37788933@N05/
MichiganMan Apr 27th, 09, 05:16 AM hey neighbor from Owosso Mi here.I'll throw out 10k to 13k as my thought.I'd also suggest to you to keep it as original as possible thats one nice looking car.
thorpe67RS Apr 27th, 09, 06:45 AM Lets put it this way..if you can buy that car for 6 grand im not sure what you are waiting for. Its a no brainer. Although i suppose its not going anywhere and...after all, you should be getting the grandson discount right?
clill Apr 27th, 09, 08:02 AM 10K...Light green interior and column shift hurt it. Great place to park 10K if you want a car to play with.
Don K 70 Apr 27th, 09, 03:51 PM As much as I'd like the car, I can't afford it. If they are set on selling it, then I don't want to see someone "steal" it from them, so to speak. That's why I was looking for some input on what it should be able to sell for. Now on the other hand, they're not selling it for the money so perhaps I could stall them for a while until I could get my hands on it.
clill Apr 27th, 09, 03:53 PM If they are set on selling it, don't let them take less than 10K.
rich pern Apr 27th, 09, 04:10 PM If they don't need the money, as was said before, beg, plead, cut their grass, paint the house, whatever it takes. It's only in the family once.
See if they will take payments from you?
I agree with Carley, if they do decide to sell, don't let someone else take em for a ride. 10k is what that car is worth, even in this stagnant market. Just might have to wait.
Rich
thorpe67RS Apr 27th, 09, 04:55 PM Sorry i misunderstood. I thought you were buying it..and somewhere i thought you said you thought 6k would do it. IF someone else is buying it i agree with the others...10k. Unless of course they would like to sell it to me for 6 grand cause im such a nice guy. :D
Don K 70 Apr 30th, 09, 03:12 PM Well guys, I appreciate the help but my grandparents didn't wait for me to relay the feedback that you guys provided. I just called my grandpa to tell him not to take less that 10k for it and he told me they sold it yesterday for $5500 to the same guy who made the initial offer of $4500. I asked him why he didn't wait for me to get back with them and he said that the car was just sitting there taking up space. Apparently that small car was consuming too much of their 5 acres of property. I'm kinda pissed that they asked me to help them find out what it was worth and then just sell it before I even give them an answer. Oh well, there's nothing I can do about it now. I figured I'd just pass along this info since many of you took the time to help me out. Thanks again.

Holy crap...that guy just stole that car from your grandparents. But i guess they have no one to blame but themselves. Theyve had it for that long and couldnt wait another week to make another 4-5k?
rich pern Apr 30th, 09, 07:05 PM Wow. At least you won't have to cut those 5 Acres anytime soon! :)
Don K 70 Apr 30th, 09, 07:59 PM I forgot to mention that they told me the guy who bought it doesn't plan to restore it to drive and keep. He wants to restore it and sell it for more money. I guess he could just turn around & sell it right now for way more than he paid for it.

Knowing that just adds insult to injury.
purecam May 1st, 09, 04:58 PM That sucks.. I can't imagine my grandparents doing that to me..Unless they were hard up for cash.
MichiganMan May 2nd, 09, 04:44 AM too bad you didnt read the PM i sent you early on in this thread.
Don K 70 May 5th, 09, 12:30 AM Michigan Man, I did read the PM you sent, however, it was shortly after my grandparents told me they sold the car so there wasn't much I could do. On another note, are you familiar with the Au Gres car show/cruise? I think it's usually in July. I love driving in cruises but the Au Gres cruise is the only one I'd rather be on the side of the road taking pictures. There's not too many cruises these days where it's expected to see people hosing down spots on the road for burn outs and that's exactly what happens there. I can't wait.
