The head and cam combo I have is what I have to work with already. My budget for this season is into the short new block. Was hoping to get around 450hp at the flywheel out of the combo listed about but I think the heads will be the limiting factor here. I know the compression with the 64 cc heads is a little high for the street and will need to run an additive or a mix of racing fuel and 93 octane this year. Thinking of next year purchasing some Pro TopLine 72cc heads and a new cam package. Any suggestions would be appreciated. This is a weekend only ride with a few planned trips sown the strip. Thx in advance for you help and sorry for the long post! If I missed any informed for the dyno let me know and I should be able to provide it.

bowtie1Z28 Feb 26th, 03, 05:18 PM Thx onovakind67!
Some other pertinent info I maybe should have included:
The block is zero decked
rods are 5.7"
.039 compressed gasket thickness
Looks like the hp starts falling off at 5000.....due to heads??? or cam??? or maybe conbo of both? Was thinking of 6000-6200 max shift point when running at the strip. Due to budget I was again leaning towards the next step up in the Energizer series......302*adv/246* @ 050 .500 lift, 106lsa. Was alos hoping for a good racy sounds idle which this cam should provide. Would you mind running the dyno again with this cam. thx!
Tom
68rs406 Feb 26th, 03, 09:43 PM the heads/cam are definately holding you back, but i would say leave the cam untill you upgrade the heads. i personally would look into different manifolds as well, the torker is kinda old school, imo. but, it will still be lots of fun to drive, untill you step up to better heads. 400's like good breathing heads, and naturally make lots o torque. also, my guess is w/ a zero deck, .039 gasket, flat tops, and 64cc chambers, your compression is closer to 11.5:1, my 406 is set up similarly to that, compression wise. good luck graemlins/thumbsup.gif
onovakind67 Feb 26th, 03, 10:04 PM To quote John Lingenfelter:
A strong cylinder head will always make more power, even if poorly matched with the cam. A weak cylinder head matched with an optimized cam will never perform as well.
You lose a lot with too much cam coupled with too small a head. Here's the same engine as above with the 246° cam with a 102° ICL:

This is the price some guys pay for that 'racy' idle.
Take your engine with the 228° cam, add Pro 200cc heads, a set of 1-7/8" x 40" headers, 20" merge collector, crossover, a 900 cfm carb, Vicjr manifold, 1.6 rockers, a windage tray, electric fan, and you get the following:

The average power remains about the same since the top end gains are offset by low end losses.
bowtie1Z28 Feb 27th, 03, 04:56 PM Thx alot everone!! I was blown away by the HP difference in going to the Pro TopLine 200cc heads!!!! :D Of course after sseing those numbers I am bummed with having to wait to get a set.
Would changing to the Crane Energizer 286 do me any better with my current heads? The specs on this cam are 286*adv/230* @ 050 .465 lift 106LSA. I was thikning maybe a little more duration, a little less lift and I keep reading that these long stroke small blocks like the LSA to be around 106-108*. Perhaps there would be a better solid lifter cam at a reasonable price that I should consider? Or maybe just leave well enough alone and wait until I get the Pro TopLines? Not sure which way to go?

I wouldn't waste any money on the motor until you can do it right.
