I have a comp cam 294s that i ran in my sbc a few years back and then switched it for a crane bracket cam. Now I am thinking that I should go back to the 294s. Can I run this cam using new lifters? Or should I dump it and buy a new one? My crane cam is way too radical for the street. I installed it when I was bracket racing but now am using the car on the street for fun.
Lobes on the comp cam look fine, wear patterns on lobes track evenly to one side of lobe on each lobe. Would really appreciate some input.

For the price of a cam, why compromise??
Get a cam that`s right for the combo.

It being your cam you know it is good should not be a problem to run with new lifters.

If one lifter went bad on a new car during the warranty period, GM would change that lifter if they could get away with it. Newer more aggresive profiles might make a difference but if you want to try it, it can save you a few bucks. I hate to tear them down again myself so I always toss the cam if it had been run before unless I can match the lifters to the lobes. All new lifters might be fine.

I guess I would try it in this case. smile.gif Be sure to let us know if it works out for you.

Taken from the crane cams website: "If you are rebuilding an engine and plan to re-use the existing cam and lifters (in the same block) it can be done, as long as the lifter goes back on the same lobe it is mated to. To keep your components in order, a Crane Cams “Organizer Tray” part no. 99015-1 would be helpful. If the lifters get mixed up, they cannot be used, and a new set will be required. The new lifters would also have to go through the break-in procedure to mate to the old cam."

The lesson I learned in my youth was this:

ONLY install used lifters if they go back on thier original lobe.

ALWAYS use new lifters on a used cam if you got the old ones mixed up.

NEVER put used lifters on a new cam.

(The above advice is for flat tappet cams. I think it's OK to put good used roller lifters on a new roller cam.)
