View Full Version : ZZ4 Performance?
jacksz28 Nov 21st, 00, 07:40 PM I'm considering a ZZ4 For my 69. Anyone have performance numbers what this thing does out of the box? I Hear from high 12's to mid 13's. I currently have an M21 with a 4.10 but am considering a Tremec overdrive and 3.73's. Do I need special headers? I saw one at the Super Chevy Show in Vegas and the exhaust ports look D shaped. Any opinions, experiences? Thanks.
rojo Nov 22nd, 00, 06:49 AM I hope this post gets going. I'd also like to hear some opinions, install issues, etc. from those that actually have ZZ4's.
gheatly Nov 22nd, 00, 07:47 AM I have a ZZ3 which is very similar to the ZZ4. It was a good engine that could run with late model F-bodies. I raced my brother in his 94 Firebird Formula and beat him 3 out of 3, but only by a nose. I had an M-21 with 3.73s.
My ZZ3 burned oil from the day I installed it until 3 years later when I got tired of burning oil. I had it rebuilt with forged pistons and a different cam and so far so good.

1st & 2nd GENGuy Nov 22nd, 00, 10:30 AM I have not had mine on the road yet so I do not know performance numbers yet. I do know this - it sounds outstanding. You will need headers for angled plugs. It is rated at 345hp with 400 ftlbs of torque so it should stay with new F bodies (LS1). I hope I will have mine on the street this coming summer. The fast burn heads with hot cam will get you to around 485hp!!!

lnjstreetrods Nov 22nd, 00, 07:58 PM Everyone here knows my opinion but here it is again. Put a LT1 in w/ 6 spd keep the 4:11's and get the good time slip and also 20 + MPG.
Just a thought.

RAY NORLIN Nov 23rd, 00, 06:38 PM I have a '69 Z28 with a ZZ4. Have never run car on the strip but love the engine. Ran it stock for awhile and found it very streetable and fun. Car has 411 gears, t10 trans, BG 750 double pumper, MSD pro billet dist, digital 6plus box, blaster coil, and a boost timing master. Heads have now been ported and polished and a B&M 144 roots blower added and the hot cam from GM. it is now a lot more fun to drive. This is very streetable and a nice set up. Runs great. the one thing I didn't like is if you add roller rockers and hot cam you must buy $100 aluminum spacer from GM and I found this thing to be of very poor quality. No one seemed concerned or interested in helping me with the problem.
Round headers will worked with the D shaped exhaust port.

choptop Nov 24th, 00, 06:27 AM The ZZ4 is a great engine! Mine does very well on the street and has plenty of power without modifications. Correct gearing will help with putting the power to the ground. I run a TH400 behind mine with a 3000 stall coverter and 3.73 gears. Haven't had it to the track yet, but if my driving is good I would guess that the car could finish in the mid 13's. I have heard that this engine responds well to head/ intake/cam modifications. Wish I could find out but I don't have the cash for parts...yet!
