: AFR's, any last words?
LoneStar68 Dec 4th, 01, 05:47 AM I'm gonna do it. Don't dare try and talk me out of it. Been trying to decide for months which sbc aluminum head to go with, and now I'm absolutely, positively, without a doubt, fairly confident that the AFR 195's are pretty close to being at least one of the better heads on the market at this time. So don't come on here and start talking about all those other heads, and quoting flow numbers, and telling any horror stories about the AFR's, and trying to get me to change my mind(again), cause it just ain't gonna happen.... anybody?.... somebody?....please?
PS. heads are going on a 68 with a 377, 10.8:1, Lunati solid lifter, .528/.550 lift 292/288 adv. duration, 3500 stall TH350, 4.56 gears, 29x10 Goodyears, 2920lbs.

Sleepy-69 Dec 4th, 01, 06:58 AM I'm looking for aluminum sb heads myself for one of the 69's.
Almost everything I hear about the AFR's is positive...great flow, good price, aluminum, good customer support.
I researched this on this sight and the only negative to be found was that of oil consumption. The thought is that the valve guides are spec'd a lttle loose. Do a search...see what feedback you get. If this is the case, it's something that could fixed before install. Let us know what you do.
Good luck!
Crucible Dec 4th, 01, 07:10 AM Hey guys,
Care to tell me what "great flow #s" these produced. I'm curious how they flow.
The only head I would consider other than 195 is the Brodix Track I head. I just ran my car this weekend for the 1st time. It's a 406 with 11:1 compression, track I heads, victor intake, 750 carb. Car weighs 2960 (no driver). I was hoping to run in the 11s. Well, first pass was 11.70, and this is with a 2.08 60 ft. time. Mile per hour, 119.73. Next pass, I came out @ half throttle, 1.79 60 ft., ran 11.49 and 120.
This is a solid lift lunati motor, 3200 stall, and 390 gear in rear. I have no idea why it is so fast, pretty simple motor with the exception of track I heads, CNC ported from Brodix..... my 2 cents.
67RS502 Dec 4th, 01, 08:31 AM My 215R Trickflows, after home porting do flow better across
the board then my friends 195 AFR CNC'd heads.
I dont know how big his AFR's are after the CNC job, I would
think my TFS is still bigger. Both heads were flowed on the
same flowbench back to back.
My TFS heads cost me around $1100, he spent around $1600+
for his. So if you can do some port work yourself - save yourself
the extra $500 on the heads and get some TFS heads. Plus my
TFS came with 7/16" studs, a 2.05 intake valve (or 2.08), and
a better chamber - its not easy to unshroud the valves on the AFR.
Not to say that the AFR is bad, but why pay the extra bucks?
Put the money in some port work and get a better flowing head.
Just my opinion.
Hey Crucible
Those are good times http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif

Crucible Dec 4th, 01, 12:56 PM I knew you would ask me that. It's a Lunati solid lifter. I have the cam card @ the house, I will make note to bring the specs tomorrow. I was really pleased to see the car run this right out of the box. Problem right now is traction. The 406 just ripps the tires out of the hole. Art Morrison rear on the way to fix that. Looks like your car runs really well also. Nice mph. Do you have a website or some pics of car???
chevys4me Dec 4th, 01, 04:46 PM I put a set of AFR 195 cylinder heads on a 383 I put together for my 70 Nova. I'm real pleased on how they run and the quality of the CNC port work that comes on the head. I think the AFR 195's do a good job of stratlling the line between a nice street cylinder head and one that can hold it's own on the 1/4 mile. I don't think you'll be disappointed if you decide on the AFR's. http://www.camaros.net/forum/wink.gif
LoneStar68 Dec 4th, 01, 05:49 PM 67RS502, I looked long and hard(still am) at the Trickflows, but I'm afraid the angle plugs will hit my headers, and don't want to have to fork out for another set. Guess there's always shorty plugs. Are the trickflows made by Summit? I've bought tons of good stuff from them, but have had a problem or two with stuff that they manufactured themselves, but nothing serious.
Crucible, those are some dang good numbers! I'm jealous, been working on mine for a year and a half to get into the 11's. You must have really done your homework.
Thanks to all for the replies!

boodlefoof Dec 4th, 01, 07:08 PM what about the AFR 210s? If this is a mostly drag motor (sounds like it) they have some big flow numbers.
ed kyle Dec 5th, 01, 03:21 AM I currently have a set of AFR 210's on my drag only car 2700# runs 9.89@134. I am in the process of filling the floor area of these heads to get the cc's down to 200 (they are 215 now) to try and improve the velocity thru the heads. I'll let you know the results next season. I can post before and after flow figures sooner then that though.

Crucible here. Thanks on the comment about #s. As silly as it is, I bought this car from a really good guy in Arkansas. He was on a budget, so put all the money in the heads and pistons. Other than that, it's a stock 400 crank, 5.7 rods, and a solid lift cam from Lunati. I got the car about 1 year ago, and haven't touched the motor since I bought it from him. Like I said, 1st pass was in the 11's just shy of 120 mph. I really have to think the Brodix Track I head is helping this equation. Simple motor other than the heads. 120 mph @ 2960 lbs., something is right about the Brodix. Sorry, no big homework here...
67RS502 Dec 5th, 01, 08:22 AM Trickflow isnt made by Summit, but I think Summit bought
them out.

About filling the floor on the AFR 210, (I'm thinking of doing that on
a set of BB rect. heads one day, and raising the roof too, trying
to keep a smaller cross section on the runner size - since
my car runs well with the oval ports). I dont think that doing that
on your car that runs 9s will help - it should like the bigger head,
but it would be nice to see what the heads flow before/after the
port work, and what the car does at the strip.
Crucible:
If your wanting to see a pic of my car, dont bother - its the ugliest
thing you've seen - all primered with a blue roof and a 4" cowl hood. Next year it will be silver http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif

Ken Davidson Dec 7th, 01, 09:41 AM The only thing I can say bad about AFR's are watch out for their guide plates. Mine were slightly "tweeked" and when they were installed, most broke. AFR did not stand behind them when my engine builder called them about the problem.
Buddy Dec 7th, 01, 07:39 PM valves were bent on ours and so was the guideplates. engine builder had to re assemble the heads.
CamaroNOTcamero Dec 7th, 01, 07:44 PM double check everything! if your gonna lay down your money, then dont let your invest just break up on you, dont think that things arent out of place.
