I need some info on electric fans. I have a 468 BB, VA AC, 4 spd with the factory 3 core radiator, rebuilt. What is the advantage to an electric, other than HP gain, to an engine mounted clutch fan. If I go with electric what diameter and cfm. I am thinking 16" at 2700 cfm? Do I use the factory shroud with the electric or not. With the factory set up the engine runs cool and no electric shorts or those issues and the cost is reasonable. Some thoughts before I change just for the sake of modernization!!

If you are having no problems then why change. I use them because of fit issues between the radiator and water pump. The stock cooling system is the best if it is in good working order.

Now if you want electric fans you will not use your factory shroud. I recommend a custom shroud to go across the whole front of the radiator or by dual fans. The shroud on the dual fans covers the front of the radiator. But a dual setup from Spal is about $350.00 from Summit.

Go with a Lincoln Mark 8 fan setup. Moves about 4000 cfm and can be had new for about 135.00.... If you are already running cool I would leave it alone...

Your not saving horsepower by switching to an electric fan. Whatever HP it takes to operate your stock fan will be less than the HP it takes to run the electric fan once you take into account the efficiency of the electric motor and the extra load placed on your alternator. The only reason drag racers use it it because they can turn them off for the 30 seconds between staging for the run and completeing the run. On a daily driver there is ZERO advantage in switching to an electric driven fan, if you don't have a physical need to do it (like a mechanical fan won't fit between the water pump and the radiator face).

Thanks for the input. I will stick with the original stuff and keep cool!! Going to the unveiling of the new Camaro at Hendrick Chevy on Sat. All Camaro owners are invited. So head down to Monroe, NC for a drooling fest.
