I just bought a set of Vortec heads I will install on my 68. Looking for advise on intake choice between the Edelbrock performer and performer RPM. Also any comments on hood clearance and what air cleaner to use with 3" filter. Here are the specs. Used for street and occasional strip. Thanks

350 cu, TH350, about 9:1 with vortecs, 1 5/8 headers, Edelbrock 600 CFM, Comp XE262 Cam (1300-5600 RPM) 3.23:1 gears

I just saw an ad for a RPM air gap for the vortec heads, I'd go for that one. I definitaly wouldn't go with the regualar performer.

I would use the RPM intake. I have seen the Air Gaps up close and even though they look cool, the casting is pretty crummy.

The performer RPM is a very good intake and will work well with your combination. GM also sells an intake that works very well but it's price tag is a little on the high side. You won't go wrong with the RPM!

I was looking at a kit from Pace Parts. It had the Vortecs, head gaskets, GM intake and gasket, all for $600. They were the better springed haeds too. I still think thats a killer deal.

By the way, you asked about clearance with a 3" air filter; it's no problem. I had over an inch of clearance under a stock hood on my 67 with a drop base air cleaner with a 3" filter. This was on top of the Edelbrock 600 carb and Performer RPM intake, with the Vortec heads.

Thanks for the info, I called Edelbrock and got two different answers, one vote for the performer and one for the performer rpm, I'm thinking performer RPM as it matches my cam closer than the performer. What brand of drop base air cleaner are you talking about? I presently have a flat base on a holley spreadbore and only have about 3/8 to 1/2 inch clearence. Thanks again I appreciate the input!! Unfortunately I put my car away today for the winter and won't get to try all this until about april.

Sorry I missed your question. I'm using the Summit brand drop base air cleaner (14"x3").

Edelbrock makes the GMPP intake as well, with a few added water ports per GMPP spec's.

The Edelbrock is less expensive and works well. Be carful when using the droped base air cleaners with Holley carbs that have choke towers. There is not much room between the lid of the air cleaner and the top of the carb choke tower. If it gets too close, you can lose power.

I shopped for these awhile back. One thing I found out is that only the Performer RPM allows you to plumb hot water thru a passage under the carb for cold climates. Something you might want to think about in the Great White North.

I run the performer rpm, not the airgap and run a 4 inch filter (drop base) and a 1/2 inch spacer with plenty of clearance on my factory cowl hood. One thing to be aware of is if you run a dbl pumper carb there will be an interferance problem between the secondary accelerator and your break booster fitting, thats why I run the spacer.

I am really surprised that Edelbrock didn't say to go with the regular Performer intake. I believe that the rpm range of that manifold is idle to 5500 which is right in rpm range of your cam. You also might want to check out the Weiand Stealth manifold if you don't want to have what everyone else has. I believe they have one for Vortec heads now and other people online rave about them
