1968 Camaro RS/SS, Corvete Bronze with a black top, Muncie 4 speed, Big block, driven in and around Hulbert, Oklahoma (Tahlequah, OK) in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

According to the 2nd owner people would come from all over to race it. "It was the fastest car around." "Nobody could beat it."

Just curious if anyone remembers anything about it or what dealer would have sold it new. I do know Jimmy Knight ( a used car dealer) sold it used in the early 1970's.

Thanks.

Was it a 427 converted car?

I own the car today. It was a factory original RS/SS 4 speed BBC with air, but other than that your guess is as good as mine. That's the reason for this post.

I have spoke with the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th, owners. I have the title history to 1978(3rd owner). Second owner bought the car in Tahlequah, OK in the early/mid 1970's. 3rd owner builds race car motors for a living, Bobs Machine Shop, Hulbert, OK. He bought the car in the mid/late 70s from Larry Waters (2nd owner) of Hulbert OK, pulled the motor, rebuilt it, and sold the engine to a racer. The car less engine was sold by Bob to the 4th (mystery owner) in 1984 with as a lot with other cars. The car has never been wrecked, repainted, or cut on. The body speaks for itself, but it is missing a lot of parts.

When I spoke with the 2nd owner all he could talk about was how fast the car was and how people would come from everywhere to race it. Yada yada. When I spoke with the 3rd owner he said he just bought cars to get the engines for his business and most had something special about them. A 396 may qualify as special, I don't know.

I'm just fishing for more information. If you know anyone from Tahlequah, OK maybe they know something about this car or maybe not. Like I said, I'm just fishing.

Thanks for your post.

It reminds me of a car I knew well from the 70's.It was my friends 69 SS 396 4speed car.He bought it around 1976.Gorgous car White with black hockey stripe and Black vinyl top ,White hounds tooth interior, console with gauges and factory tach.Power steering ,tinted glass and A/C! Car was from Reedmans Chevrolet in Langhorne PA.Get this when he bought it in 1976 it had a 1969 L88 427,Sun Guages and Tach, headers,MT valve covers,Lakewood slapper,Cragar SS mags and 488's in the 12 bolt.It was originally the low Horse Power 396 motor because of the factory A/C. Who put it in,we wonder to this day!! Car was freaking fast and always thru the A/C fan belt when he nailed it!! Man those were the days! Your car could of been the same situation, some guys wanted the Go Fast but with creature comforts. If you know the town or area it was originally from start there, old automotive parts stores, body shops and of coarse speed shops if theres any. Good luck,,Dan
