View Full Version : Is a new Toy Box a tool?
Fred Ficarra May 3rd, 09, 03:06 PM Here's my new Camaro hauler. Now I can spend the weekend at the strip, go out of town to other strips and maybe even Hot August Nights.:hurray:
Here I am picking it up at the dealer for some 'owner installed' work. Hope this picture isn't too big. I used the wrong setting.
http://epitomesrebuild.com/images/338.jpg
The other side. After this weekend it went back to the dealer for the awning that spans the flood lights and for air conditioning. That'll run from the camper generator. The trailer generator compartment will be used for storage.

Test run with the camper.

A look at the hitch needed with a long camper.

I've already spent two weekends at the strip with this setup. Yep, there's bugs. Luckily they have simple fixes. Now I can relax and enjoy racing.
These toy boxes dominate up here. Our cars go home during a rain out and stay clean. Not the case with open trailers. And they're much more secure against theft.
speedfreek May 3rd, 09, 03:38 PM That looks great. I'd live in it. I wish I had one. :D:thumbsup:
82Vettrin May 3rd, 09, 04:04 PM THAT is sweet , Fred. congratulations. :beers:
now, go on and buy the generator that goes in the box; you know you'll need it sooner-or-later.
Everett#2390 May 3rd, 09, 04:42 PM Nice rig, all of it, including the slide-in.
SPARKY69 May 4th, 09, 05:09 AM very cool!!! thats awesome and thats what i call enjoying life!!!!!!!!!!
Fred Ficarra May 4th, 09, 10:34 AM Thanks men! There isn't a day that passes that I don't thank the good-luck-gods! I'm the luckiest man I know, by far.
(pssst, it's all paid for. No credit, just cash. We don't have a mortgage. Paid that off 4 years ago):hurray:
Fred Ficarra May 4th, 09, 10:38 AM That looks great. I'd live in it. I wish I had one. :D:thumbsup:
First race was soooo cold that the entire car club stayed inside the trailer between rounds. One of the guys provided the propane heater.
1969ProStreetCamaro May 4th, 09, 05:47 PM Looks awesome Fred:yes:. 28ft?? or 24ft?? Storage cabinets and work table??

Fred Ficarra May 4th, 09, 05:59 PM Looks awesome Fred:yes:. 28ft?? or 24ft?? Storage cabinets and work table??

24 ft. And yes, yes, yes, yes.:hurray:
I should take more pictures but it's raining so hard right now that I'd get washed down the street if I went outside!
1969ProStreetCamaro May 4th, 09, 06:04 PM 24 ft. And yes, yes, yes, yes.:hurray:
Awesome....same configuration as my Vintage Brand "Outlaw" model toy box:beers:.

98blackburb May 4th, 09, 06:31 PM Good Looking Rig Fred , Take Care of my Original Hugger :D. That is probably my next big purchase. Is that a Pace brand or ? More pic's and info, likes and dislikes......Thanks Alan
Fred Ficarra May 5th, 09, 02:12 PM Yep, Pace.
'Likes' so far;
Wide. I can drive in with the car lined up off center so as to be able to get out. That means the electric winch is only needed in case of breakdown.
Smooth outside. Great for matching camper graphics. Now if Eagle Cap would call.
Rubber floor.
AC lights and air conditioning. (owner installed 2kw Prosine inverter) Also runs off of campers Onan 2.5kw propane generator.
Brakes on all axles.
Cool rear ramp.
Not so good;
Tongue jack. Exhausting! 3500# electric jack should arrive Thursday.
Trunk Monkey installed the Pit pal. (aluminum rack on door) Two thirds of the mounting screws failed at the strip when I used it to close the door. Said Monkey spun the mounting screws in until they ripped out all the wood that was suppose to hold it in place. Then on the way home the rest of the screws failed and the cabinet smashed the forward cabinet door. It could have gone the other way and done a number on my car.
The Pit pal is now correctly installed (by me) and passed the gorilla test. (the test used on sailboats) and the damaged door was replaced by Pace. No complaints with their service.
Cutaway brake battery mounted so as to block load leveler hitch bracket. They should mount this little battery on the center frame rail, not the outside. It's changed.
Oh! It stopped raining! More pictures?
Everett#2390 May 5th, 09, 02:35 PM Not so good; the damaged door was replaced by Pace. No complaints with their service. Are door hinges heavy enough to support the added weight of a loaded cabinet?
98blackburb May 5th, 09, 02:59 PM Thanks Fred:thumbsup:
Fred Ficarra May 5th, 09, 03:21 PM More snaps, hot off the presses. These should answer your question Everett.

The strap hangers from Jegs aren't here yet so this'll have to do. Not as convenient.
http://epitomesrebuild.com/images/346.jpg
I flipped on the inverter for the AC lights.
http://epitomesrebuild.com/images/347.jpg
The tool box is bolted down of course. The hatch on the floor is for the spare tire. I don't have one. Instead the floor jack is there, plus wood blocks for wheels and the tongue.

Hatman May 5th, 09, 03:52 PM Looks good Fred I do recomend getting spare tire, My now wife and I were hauling after a Saturday night drag race in Great Bend Kansas to a Sunday drag race the next day in Kearney NE . Some where between the two I heard a tire go south on me I said Uh,Oh, she said well just put the spare on ,I said Uh the spare is about 200 mile away sitting in the shop. She said ^&%$, <(*&$< ,^&*&(* !!! So from now on I carry two spares. We did make it to the race that sunday morning after getting a room at a very small mom & pop motel. I went down to the local coffee shop the next morning & asked I if there was a tire shop in town & one of the old guys there happened to have a tire shop down there steet .He said bring your rig down ,we put on a good used tire and had us going down the raosd in no time at all. With all that said I am going to have to post a pic. or two of my new hauler. Stay posted !
Everett#2390 May 5th, 09, 05:45 PM Nice hinges, Fred. As Will suggested, two spares are better than one.......one never knows........I carry two on my open trailer, plus the fact the trailer are GM bolt pattern rather than Ford, so I can use the front tires of the car......
Fred Ficarra May 5th, 09, 06:10 PM I have a problem. Never had a flat. And in these parts there's a tire store in every hamlet. I'd just have to slow down to be safe. And these tires are brand new,,,,
OK, I'll try the floor jack in the generator compartment. Lot's of room. I can't use my car tires. The trailer is six lug. Wonder what a matching aluminum spare wheel would cost??
GMJoe May 6th, 09, 03:54 PM Thats one nice looking set up you have there.
Have you towed it with the car in and the camper on? It has to be extremely heavy, that combo should give your truck a work out for sure.
Everett#2390 May 6th, 09, 05:38 PM I can't use my car tires. The trailer is six lug. Wonder what a matching aluminum spare wheel would cost??Yes, you can't use car tires because of lack of weight rating. This is why one uses a ST tire, specifically made for trailers, and yes, weight is the issue for the 6-lug wheels.
Buying a single alum wheel from the vendor may be a little hair raising experience...............if you have hair.
Fred Ficarra May 6th, 09, 05:54 PM Joe, yes, and up the steepest hill (15% grade)between my house and the track with a full load, I do 10mph over the limit. Hey it's a Duramax! With the factory power option. Hauls ass too. AND THANK YOU!
Everett, thanks for the warning.
This just in, $240, aluminum matching wheel and tire. Might as well match. It's on its way.
clwilcox33 May 7th, 09, 07:29 AM Now you just need a huge Team Camaro logo on the sides ;) Just kidding, not sure Al would approve that. Definately could do a sticker somewhere though
Very nice setup Fred!!!
Fred Ficarra May 7th, 09, 12:42 PM Thanks Christropher!
And my electric tongue jack will the here in 15 minutes. (UPS is timely)
Oops, five minutes. They're here. Gotta go.
2:55pm. Done. Wanna see?
Seeing as how I took a picture, here it is. And it works.
Also the jammed hand crank jack is fixed. The inner plunger rotated and jammed inside the outer housing. Don't ask. Anybody want a freebie? Works like new.

prostreet69camaro May 7th, 09, 06:54 PM Fred,
Very nice trailer. I just had mine stolen. Buy some good locks for it. Also just bought a 24 ft Haulmark Edge trailer. Looks very similiar to yours.
Also I dont recommend putting stickers on it. The ones I had on my old trailer faded and peeled after a while. I am not going to put any on my new trailer.
Everett#2390 May 7th, 09, 07:56 PM Agreed, most anything you can do to prevent it from being taken.
Ball lock, locking chock between the two tires, remove a tire or two, neighborhood would really like that, GPS cell phone when it is taken.
no69x-44 May 7th, 09, 09:18 PM Man Fred, very nice indeed. I think I can live in that dang thing!
Enjoy it
Fred Ficarra May 8th, 09, 09:57 AM Thank Men! As far as theft? I'm a retired cop. As such the number one requirement for this home was to build in a low crime area. We're there. We don't lock our doors. Well, now and then, but we've never had a theft in 14 years here. Hell, the farm stuff has the keys in them. Truck included.

Fred, that is what I thought also. I had my trailer 14 years in the field behind my house. It is locked and gated. The trailer was also locked. Never had a problem or anyone mess with the trailer. Then on a rainy night April 10th, it is gone. This time I bought a newer style tongue lock and the wheel lock boots to put on 2 of the wheels. Hopefully this will prevent it from being stolen.
2x67rs/ss May 8th, 09, 04:15 PM Fred I like your setup!
I weighed just a little over 23000lbs last year. I have added a 4 wheeler and will also be hauling a Jr Dragster to a few races this year along with my car. I don't have a generator in my camper so it rides in the trailer. I took the small battery off the tongue and wired the break away direct to my winch battery in the trailer.
That hitch is HEAVY! You may dread hooking it up at times but Torklift makes some great stuff. I see you have the tie downs too. We have spent some great nights camping at the track and when its hot my wife stays in the camper till I make a pass. She then comes out long enough to video the pass and jumps back in the A/C.

Andy, didn't mean to ignore you but I've been racing or out of town since your post. We should form a club and park side by side. Oh wait. That's a Ford!
Weight: Truck empty=7100lbs, trailer=4800lbs (I was told), Camaro=3500, camper 3700 (depending on tanks). Lets see,,,,, WHOA! 19100. Good thing I've got a Duramax HD.

Down in the field behind the house huh? Mine is in the driveway in front of the garage. And none of my stuff can be seen from the road. Oh, and everything is insured. :o
CamarosRus May 17th, 09, 10:45 PM Fred, I live in Renton,WA............CONGRATS on your purchase. May you use it in good health!!!!!!!
Curious if you bought this (very expensive) trailer NEW from Truck Town........or are you 2nd owner.
Several months ago I bought a (lightly used)10,000GVW 20' PACE American Shadow GT, very similar to yours. I'm just hauling a restored or show type Camaro and felt 20' was adequate for my needs.
I'd like to find at when youre usually at Pacific Raceways (Kent,WA) so I can come out and see your rig and race car.
BTW, I bought a one owner 2003 Quad Cab 3500 DODGE Longbed/Single Rear Tire with Cummins/6spd stick to pull mine.................
Fred Ficarra May 18th, 09, 10:09 AM Chuck, yep, Truck Town new. Dave is an old buddy so I can't tell you what I paid. (it was a very fair price) And ya know,,,,,, I spotted a golf cart that just doesn't quite fit in my 24 footer. A 28 would do it. Maybe we could work something out???
I've not been to SIR in probably 20 years. But on the 4th of July I've penciled-in the weekend to be there. I'll get to drive around the track with my road wheels. (car club event) But we miss the fireworks from the sailboat. What to do?
Fred Ficarra May 23rd, 09, 03:00 PM Time for changes!:hurray:
The toy box got an upgraded front end yesterday. Hey! Its front end has to look good. It's carrying a Rally Sport with Endura and a spoiler on its front end!
Get a load of this! I just rewired the front of the trailer. The factory used Scotch-locks and tape. Horrible! See the cutaway switch? It's under the front of the frame. It's suppose to lock the brakes if that silver cable gets pulled out. Forgetaboutit! Defective. Can you imagine driving one of these rigs around for 20 years with such a false sense of security? The switch is getting changed before the next trip! And I also modified the load leveler frame clamps. The frame is now thru-bolted so the diamond plate doesn't have to be notched to clear the ugly clamps. Plus, the clamps would have had to be brought forward to clear the new gear-box. Next project is to cut off the unneeded clamp steel that still sticks up. And!,,, I have enough diamond plate left over to cover the exposed sides of the frame. I'll do that when I shorten the brackets.

The other side with the Costco-special box open. The little emergency brake battery is now on the work bench looking for a new home.
http://epitomesrebuild.com/images/362.JPG
Here's the new tie-down strap holders from Jegs. The use of the floor rings is to keep them from marring the wall. I'm thinking that just letting the heavy ratchet mechanism lie on the floor will solve that concern.

98blackburb May 23rd, 09, 04:15 PM Fred, 2 Words..........I'm Jealous :D
HarleyD67 May 23rd, 09, 09:06 PM I have trailer envy. http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c87/HarleyD67/Smilies/36_3_81.gif
Everett#2390 May 23rd, 09, 09:23 PM Why not put the breakaway battery inside the tool box?
Fred Ficarra May 23rd, 09, 09:33 PM Why not put the breakaway battery inside the tool box?
Because there's 250 amp hours of batteries in the trailer. See the boxes under the jack stands?
http://epitomesrebuild.com/images/350.jpg
prostreet69camaro May 23rd, 09, 10:11 PM Fred, You can buy another set of the strap hangers and mount them closer to the floor. Then hook them to both hangers and tighten the strap. Then they wont hit the wall or scrape it. That is what I am going to do to my trailer.
Fred Ficarra May 23rd, 09, 11:43 PM Mike, duly noted. Thanks for that!
CamarosRus May 24th, 09, 01:11 PM Fred and others, I need to learn how to install, mount, connect, wire etc etc batteries to my new floor mounted winch..........
And what charges the batteries????? Just old school 110Volt Charger????
Also do I/You need a temporary removable roller at rear edge of trailer floor to keep cable from rubbing/cutting floor covering????
Thanks,
prostreet69camaro May 24th, 09, 01:51 PM Chuck, I take my battery out of my trailer and keep it in my garage. I only use my trailer about 3 or 4 times a year. I put a battery tender on my battery while it is in the garage.
You should be able to run your winch wires directly to your battery in the trailer. Mine came with a circuit breaker for the positive side.
I noticed the same thing about the cable hitting the floor at the back where the dove tail is. I bought some cheap front door floor mats at Home Depot. I am going to lay them under the cable when I use the winch. They were only $3.50 each. Another problem I have is my car is real low in the front and on my old trailer the header flange on the drivers side would hit my tile and crack it. So I am going to put one under each header flange to protect my new rubber floor.
I bought a plastic battery box from Walmart, then screwed it to the floor. Then ran wires to my winch and electric tongue jack. I mountd my winch in front of my cabinets. But I remove it when I dont need it. Then I store it in the cabinets. I have a quick disconnect that I got from Superwinch to unplug the winch. Plus when you unplug it the terminals are protected from touching any metal. Here is the disconnect I bought. They make bigger ones depending on how much current your winch draws. I only have a 3000# winch.

Chuck, the inverter is a marine model. It has a 100 amp automatic battery charger. I just plug in the shore power cord, either to the house or the camper generator and it charges the batteries. And it's 3 stage.
http://epitomesrebuild.com/images/350.jpg
As far as your winch cable rubbing, I'm not sure. I've only used it twice. The car drives right in without it. I can even walk normally past the side of the car without shuffling. It's a really wide trailer. The owners manual warns that it's not legal in some states.
SPARKY69 May 25th, 09, 10:41 AM love the tool box on the front

Costco. Cheap. $189.00. ON LINE. Go get one. And it's bigger and cheaper than the ones at Summit.

Fred Ficarra May 29th, 09, 12:11 AM Oh man! I stood sideways to avoid the setting sun for this one so I wouldn't blind you Andy! The other side is done AND the spare tire and wheel are here. Also the new breakaway switch is installed. (I know good advice, huh?)
