I have a guy down the street who does magic with vehicles- paint, body, engines, fabrications, etc.. He's hard headed in his thinking though, so I'm throwing out a question on paint type. He's suggesting the "new" Acrylic urethane Single stage, with wet sanding and buff finish- he said no need for clearcoat with this type paint?? He also said there is a 2 stage urethane with 2 coats base, 3 coats clear.....bottom line, whcih type paint should I go with for shine, durablility, etc. I have seen his work and it looks great. He just finished a 57 vette and it is awesome. Been painting 30 yrs, looks and lives like the una-bomber though, so I don't know what I really want to ask for withour offending his "know-it-all" attitude. Little quirky, but knows every bolt off of every car- you know the type....

Any help would be appreciated. Btw, he is charging me $4,000 if I buy the materials- to paint, wet sand, buff, etc. Also include painting the 2 SS stripes, all jambs, under the hood, trunk, etc. He will be taking off fenders, etc. Seems pretty reasonable, huh?

If you are using a solid color like huggar orange, a single stage urethane will work fine. It wet sands and buffs much like clear coat. If you want a deeper gloss and more durable finish, use base/clear.

Times 2 what bama said. Metallic color, you almost have to use BC/CC. I still struggled with this decision even though my car is black. I ended up using a single stage urethane. My car has taken more of a "factory" build direction and the single stage is a little more true to what the factory did.

I'm very happy with the results. It buffs easy, looks deep as glass, is very durable, and if you get a chip or scratch, the repair will look much better and be easier than BC/CC. All of this doesn't matter if your color is metallic though. What's your color?

Here's a picture of my decklid before the buff.

Good luck, and yes 4K for what he's doing is a great price. Brian

Thanks for the info- I am painting a solid color- yellow with black stripes- no metallic, so it sounds as though single stage urethane will be fine. The yellow is a Chevy 06 color that I have been seeing on Colorado trucks- not a "lemon" yellow, a deeper yellow looks- this has been a hard decision- from red to hugger orange, to silver, etc., but I'm doing the old bumble bee!

Chuck, Yes, it's before the buff. You should see it now. I couldn't be happier. I'll get some pics up here soon.

Kev, I think I'm going to have to change my answer now that I have more info. In my opinion, if you're doing stripes, I would use BC/CC. If you use SS for a base color and the stripes, you're going to have a huge line.

If you don't mind the line and are looking for a "factory" paint job that's fine. But it doesn't sound like you care too much about that. If I was doing stripes, I would lay down the base and the stripes and bury it all in a bunch of clear to smooth over the line.

Your call, but that's my opinion... Brian

The new single stage urethane he's using can have clear coat on as well. (that's what I was told??) I was also concerned about the stripes without the CC on it.

This is my opinion, using single stage for the yellow he has to let it dry then put the stripes on then let dry again and then clear this might be the way he is going. This would be simular to the way I did my car,I b/c the orange let dry put the stripes on and cleared again let dry, then cleared the whole car. This is with alot of sanding and taping in between.
