View Full Version : M21 stuck in 2nd
kcart55 May 5th, 09, 07:26 PM As I work out the bugs in my '69, my M21 with a Hurst competition plus is now stuck in 2nd gear. When I installed the shifter, I followed the Hurst instructions for aligning the linkage. It shifted fine at first, eventhough it did stick a couple of times, I was able to get it out, but not now. I hope this is not something I have to keep screwing with
buenymayor May 5th, 09, 09:24 PM Sounds like the linkage is adjusted wrong, but you said you adjusted it according to Hurst. Take the linkage off and you should be able to get under the car and pop it out of gear. Usually when they stick in gear it is because it has two gears engaged at the same time. Make sure the car can't roll on top of you or fall when you get it into neutral.
kcart55 May 6th, 09, 04:59 AM Thanks! Fortunately, I have a lift :beers:
NHBandit May 6th, 09, 05:18 AM It sounds like you're doing this without the engine running ? Manual transmissions will sometimes "stick" simply because the gears aren't perfectly aligned when it's shut off but will work fine when everything is turning. For example when checking a Muncie on the bench for going into all gears it helps if you turn the input shaft as you shift it.
67conv.cam May 6th, 09, 05:50 AM did you use the line up pin in the shifter?? and then adjust linkage?? many times folks lose the pin and try to wing it..
kcart55 May 6th, 09, 06:57 AM I was coming back in to my neighborhood, downshifted in to second, and couldn't get it back out. And yes, I used the little plastic alignment tool that came with the shifter kit. I'm going to check it this afternoon.

I'm going to check it this afternoon.i had the same problem come to find out theres a pin on the cover that came off that works with the forks and there u have it, it got stuck.or it could be as easy as a bolt that came loose?
kcart55 May 7th, 09, 05:12 AM I disconnected the linkage to the furthest foward shaft (3rd-4th?) Ran the adjuster out two turns and so far it seems to shift better. It didn't make sense, but I guess it was still in second while I was trying to shift in to third? Time will tell
Steiner May 8th, 09, 01:43 AM I've found that when you do the adjustment, you need to run it through the gears several times and then try to put the alignment rod back through with it in neutral. At least with mine, it felt dead on when I aligned it but then after working it around some it needed to be tweaked.
