Recall news:
http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21543

GM officially recalling V8's already out in owner's hands. Some kind of starter shorting issue if battery cord becomes exposed. A poor camaro owner got her car stranded after only driving it for 40 minutes because of this.

If you have your V8 already bring it back and have this fixed!

DETROIT (AP) — General Motors Corp. says it is recalling about 300 new Chevrolet Camaros because a battery cable could rub against the starter motor, wearing the insulation and potentially causing the car to stop running or fail to start.

The voluntary recall applies only to some Camaros with V-8 engines. The company says in extreme cases the cable problem could cause a fire, but no fires have been reported.

GM spokesman Dan Flores says the company has made about 1,400 of the V-8 equipped 2010 Camaros and 300 have been sold. The unsold models will be fixed before they are delivered to customers.

Flores says GM will tow the cars to dealers and offer free loaner vehicles and oil changes.

Here is the part I cannot understand for the life of me? They started production in mid March and as of recall or about 50 days after production began, they have only produced 1400 v-8's???

At that pace they would only build 10,000 v-8 cars in an entire calendar year (of course even less in a model "car "year"?

In 1969 with NO robots they built 178,000 v-8s- and had just redesigned the ENTIRE body from the 1968 camaro. So much for Technology, as others have pointed out not hard to see why GM has BIG problems, no way to run a car company after this many years of planning this new Camaro!

And I say this as an owner of a 69 and having just ordered a new one.

I sometimes wish they had released new "pretty close to 1st gen" Camaros with modern suspension, transmission, engine, etc.....

The originals still turn heads whenever one goes by....

Oh relax it's a 30 minute fix and GM has been super proactive about it. Dealers are even giving out some free oil changes and gift certificates for the inconvenience.

Traction bars in 67, engine straps for V-8 cars in 68 or 69 and a host of other problems in those years with other cars of all brands. How reliable was a Toyota in these years.........not very. It's all balancing out now and as for Chevy junk Comsumer reports has the new Malibu as one of the best built and reliable cars available from anyone right now. We have beeb being served up junk since the enseption of the automobile. It's only now starting to change, it has taken the auto industry 100 years to finaly relize that they have to build qaulity cars that people want, not what they think we need. Vega, Pinto, Toyota Turcel and Nissan Pulsars are examples junk. The vega would not run the pinto was unsafe and the Turcel and Pulsar just fell apart around a solid drive train.

Good post Kevin. Rose colored glasses sometimes get stuck to some folk's ears.

A TSB is not the same as a recall, a TSB can be as simple as a procedure used during service. A recall is a problem that has to be fixed .
GM has been building junk, I hate to say it but it's true. Not every model and not every car, but the majority of them. Everyone I know with a GM car has had multitudes of issues, my parents Cadillacs' have been the worst, non stop silly problems on all of them. The same goes for all my buddies Chrysler vehicles.
I think these issues with the Camaro is a perfect example, sure it's a new car so issues will pop up, but it's built on a existing platform, and took an extra, what 3-4 years to release? I mean this car has almost zero time in the owners hands and is already going back to the dealer for a full on recall. If this is the last one then OK they get a pass, but who believes it will be?
For the record not all makes have a recall history a mile long, new model or otherwise. We bought brand new Lexus for my wife, brand new 100% redesigned model, and there has been a total of 1 recall, adding wording on the all weather floor mats telling people not to stack them on top of the carpeted ones.... that's it. Thats why I bought a Japanese car this time for my wife.
Not just GM bashing here just pointing out the obvious, I as much as anyone want to see GM build a quality vehicle, but currently they are not in my opinion. It's sad, but true.

I would agree with this staement if we were back in the late 70's early 80's. JMO, but I feel GM has been building quality cars for the past 5+ years. GM's problems of late have stemmed from fat cat management mentality and thier unability to react to the current economic environment. I feel that today, GM builds just as good a product as Ford, maybe better. Ford hasn't needed bailout money because of better management during these economic times, GM just didn't react fast enough or have the foresight to properly react the the economic downturn.

I find it a bit disheartening that some of you have to take every opportunity you can to to turn well meaning posts into personal hate rants! Take it to the "Off Topic" forum, this derailing of every thread that comes up about the 5th gen, Chevrolet or GM is going to stop one way or another! I'm not talking about stifling anyones opinions, or conversation over issues at hand, I'm talking about the argument provoking rants that keep being injected by a small handful!

I hope my comment was not taken as perpetuating the GM bashing. I was in my own way trying to defend, what I feel, is a quality product. It seems like the "thing to do" to jump on the bandwagon and bash GM even when they have proven that they can produce a quality product (see Malibu) I think the 2010 Camaro will be a bright spot in GM's future, so confident that I ordered one a couple of weeks ago.

Sorry, if you are referring to my post Dennis, but based on the topic ("recall on Camaro") and the discussion that followed I found it pertinent to the topic, no harm intended. It's not as though we were discussing "what we like about the new Camaro" and a hate fest started. The reason I feel so strongly about it is it really bothers me that the big three are what they are today, thats all no hate intended. :)
As for off topic, that area is useless for coherent discussion anymore, so hopefully this thread stays out of there.

I agree for the most part with you, but GM's hallmark brand, Cadillac, has and still is plagued with problems. as well as a few other models. Ford has definitely managed the company better but also they are changing with the times sooner, and the quality of most every model is ranked at the top of their classes. I still own a 98 Chevy truck and my Camaro, and I love them both so I'm not just hatin' on GM.

So what does the comments above have to do with the recall? (just using these two as examples) I understand how it triggered the though process but what you two are going on about does nothing but detract from the original topic. More threads about the new Camaro get derailed than any other topic and 80% of it leads to how badly GM is at doing business. If it wasn't happening over and over we wouldn't read others posting "I thought this was a Camaro site". It's gotten so the only reason I read what some people post is because of the comments that follow the post. I like you guys and most everyone here and I just don't see what satisification is had by repetitive gloom and doom reports and posting what's wrong with GM or the American Automotive industry. To me reading what I have in this thread is no different than a lot of what is posted in Off Topic but on a smaller scale. Does any of that make sense?

Fair enough Dennis. I avoid commenting on the new Camaro at all for that reason, but it bothers me to see how the big 3 have become so I guess it's a sore subject is all, I'll leave it alone from now on, unless it shows up in "off topic", god forbid...;)

Lexus considers it a "recall" to add wording to floor mats? Must be some real serious problems if you stack those mats, like maybe the gas pedal sticking to the floor or the brakes not being able to be pushed far enough to stop the car. :DI think GM is trying to be proactive about a manufacturing defect that the potential to be a serious problem. I would rather they fix it now then after the thing leaves me stranded or worse.

Exactly, people would stack the rubber ones on top of the carpeted ones, and the accelerator would stick, happened once or twice apparently. They added "do not place on top of other floor mats" or something to that effect on the driver side mat. Lexus is super proactive about stuff like that though, customer service is HUGE with them.
I was shocked when I got the letter from them, we bought it because Lexus is the most reliable vehicle produced as a brand, plus its an amazingly nice car to drive, when I saw the reason I laughed, I remember when we called it "natural selection" when someone did something like that...:D
I hope thats exactly what GM is doing and it's not a trend, I have yet to see one in person so I'm holding out my judgement on them. I have seen a real nice Challenger the last few mornings going in to work (a neighbor must have bought one) they are cool looking cars and I hope I feel the same about the Camaro. Has the Challenger been problem free?

We had a recall on our 2008 mustang GT to adjust the tension in the passenger seatbelt. It had some crazy conditions that it might fail if not handled. I'm exagerating a "tad" but it was something like if you were female, approximately 5', and had blonde hair it might not hold....I don't know. I gotta find the letter but it was a good laugh.

The Camaro Guy

Too much Gm in my blood. I have owned 62 cars ,all but 4 were GM. All the way back to 1962, loved my Corvair. 1/2 of those were "toy" cars and 32 were Camaros. Of the driver cars, only 2 had problems, the 71 Vega, blew up the engine at 180,000 miles. Blew up the crossfire on the 82 Z-28 at 9000 miles and GM replaced it. The last 2 Caddy's are wonderful, a CTS and a STS. The newer designed cars are much better but so are the imports. The Camaro is built off the holden platform which is a proven to be a very good platform. The V-6 is from the Caddilac division. The Buick auality is right up there with the Lexas. The trucks built in the US and Canada have less problems than those built in Mexico. Look at the price difference as well. Just some thoughts.

Yeah, this is why.

I'll never understand the GM negativity on this forum.

I wonder the same thing.
I have had nothing but excellent reliability in the 30 years that I've owned nothing but GM. I would be living in a dream world if I didn't expect some problems.
