: Anyone have 13 inch rotors AND "inside the wheel" valve stems?
1968camaro123 May 6th, 09, 06:34 PM Guys,
I have 17x8 inch Intro Pentia wheels on the front of my 68 with 4.5 inches of backspacing...I noticed in an online ad that was advertising CBB kits for first gens.
They said that there is an issue with wheels that have the valve stems on the inside of the wheel instead of on the outside of the spokes like normal?
Is anyone running the Vette C4/C5 brake setup with 13 inch front rotors and "inner valve stems"?
Thanks so much!
Donnie
Steviej70 May 6th, 09, 07:48 PM If you have the problem...You can buy flush mount valve stems. They work like a champ and look good. When you want to check pressure\air up tires...you have to insert an adapter which can be a pain.
tejasrs/ss May 6th, 09, 08:44 PM I'm having the same problem. I have 17x8's Boyds (Junk Yard Dogs) with the exact same backspacing and with Baer 13" Brakes. The valve stem is in the inside of the wheel. It barely scrapes on the caliper with the valve stems caps on. I was thinking if I found round valve stem caps instead of the "hex" ones, they may clear.

BigBlock1969RS May 6th, 09, 09:01 PM I had this exact problem on my 17s on all four corners had to run the flush mounts.
1968camaro123 May 6th, 09, 09:14 PM Guys,
Thanks so much. I think that I've only maybe seen those flush mount valve stems once but I'll jump on the auction site and see if I can find some!
Once again, Team Camaro saves the day for me!
Thanks again!

BPOS May 6th, 09, 09:18 PM I have the C5/C4 Hybrid setup with TTIIs and even the tape on wheel weights wouldn't work - wiped em off on my way out the parking lot.

1968camaro123 May 6th, 09, 09:21 PM Al,
So you can't balance your front wheels? Can you get by with the flush mount valve stems?
Donnie
BPOS May 6th, 09, 09:26 PM The wheels balance just fine - they initially taped the weights onto the rim, but once we figured out that wouldn't work they used the standard "pound on" weights on the inside of the edge of the wheel. Luckily, my wheels have the valve stems on the outside of the rim. I was just posting to illlustrate how very little space there is between the caliper and the wheel.
1968camaro123 May 6th, 09, 09:31 PM AL,
WOW! That is CLOSE! But as long as they're not touching, I guess the caliper shouldn't move AT ALL.
Thanks so much, I'm not with the car right now but I'm pretty sure that my Intro's do have a little lip on the back side where I could have the wheel weights hammered on.
Donnie
BPOS May 6th, 09, 09:36 PM The angle of that photo is a little decieving, but it IS close. That's why I went with the C5/C4 setup, as it is known to clear TTIIs without a spacer. The straight C5 setup is known NOT to clear.
1968camaro123 May 6th, 09, 09:39 PM By C5/C4 you mean, C5 calipers and C4 rotors correct?

Yes
Joe Harrison May 7th, 09, 12:16 AM Valve stems that close to a brake caliper and rotor I don't think is a good idea, even flush mount ones. The heat generated from the brakes could cause a failure of the stem and boom you have a low tire or blow out. Bad news I would think.
After seeing this I am going with wheels with stems on the outside for sure.

1968camaro123 May 7th, 09, 08:52 AM Joe,
I don't think the heat would affect the valve stem to the degree where it would fail...I've only ever seen a valve stem break from an impact of some sort really.
Thank you though for the heads up, I do already have the wheels and they look quite a bit cleaner with the inner valve stems IMHO. Most of the heat that is generated from regular stop and go driving with the occasional WOT blast is dissapated pretty quickly I would think, especially with the ribbed C5 caliper, slotted rotor and billet aluminum wheel.
Take care,
Donnie
