Finally got out to the storage location of the Camaro I picked up in November last fall. The car was originally fully restored in 1989 with a full sub-frame off, interior refresh and re-paint. Originally the car was a 350hp 396 SS. Engine is original heads and intake, but block was replaced with a punched out 454 for driving purposes and the original block is being stored. Z/28 stripes were added in the late 70's and were kept when it was repainted in 1989. Car only has 250 miles since 89. Everything looked really good except a small scrape on the driver rear quarter that happened when it was being moved several years ago. We pulled out the old fuel from the tank, and filled her up with new juice. All the plugs, points, and condenser were replaced because we weren't getting any spark. After that, the car started right up and we ran it for 20min and everything looked good, no leaks at all. All that is left is to go through the brakes, steering, and safety equipment and make sure she is road ready. It's a little dirty from sitting under a cover and has not been washed in the last 20years. It's only been around the block a few times since 89 to blow off the dust. Once I get it home, the Willwood brakes, Prodigy Bar 4-link, sway bars, Hotchkis parts, and Fikse wheels will go on the car. Here are a few pics from yesterday.

Fikse's test fit today. Looks like the 2" drop all around will put the top of the tire flush to the chrome wheel moulding.....perfect. :)
This is a 10" rear rim width and gives about 1/2" clearance on the shock body with stock rear suspension.

3/8" clearance on each side. Rims are 18x10, 2" lowering, tire is a 275/35/18

great looking car and nice job, but is that going to be enough clearance? there has got to be some body roll, no?

I am looking at putting a 1/4" spacer in if I have the clearance on the outside. I am still waiting for the currect lower bushings for the coil-overs so once they are in I can set the ride height perfectly and see where I stand.

Finally got the car back on the ground today after getting brakes bled, rough alignment done, and all the bolts checked. I had to set the coilovers at the top to get the equal ride height with the 2" front drop Hotchkis springs. Pretty happy with everything. Lot's of delays waiting for bushings and getting custom braided brake lines done but at least it is finished.

Got the car into the alignment shop today. Everything was pretty close on the laser machine. I was out about a 1/4" on the rear with the alignment and about the same on the front. It needed a good amount of shimming to get the cars camber/castor sorted out but it drives pretty nice now. The prodigy bar seems to be pretty good riding compared to the stock leafs. Much stiffer and more planted ride than before. My stock seats I think are going to be an issue with hard cornering. I already feel myself bracing against the door panel and console.

Went for a drive the other day and broke a rocker. Luckily I got the car shut off before it did any damage or came apart.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b245/g356gear/RockerFailure004.jpg
Pulled everything apart and found a bent pushrod and an oiling problem from another.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b245/g356gear/Valves003.jpg
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b245/g356gear/Valves001.jpg
So I picked up a set of Comp Magnum Roller Rockers, new 3/8" pushrods and guide plates.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b245/g356gear/RollerRockers001.jpg
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b245/g356gear/RollerRockers002.jpg
With the taller rockers, I then had to change to a taller valve cover, and went to a fabricated aluminum unit.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b245/g356gear/RollerRockers005.jpg
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b245/g356gear/RollerRockers004.jpg
They don't seem to take power brake boosters into account with these, so a little cut and re-welding and everything clears OK.

First time I have seen it Steve. Sits fantastic! Very aggresive attitude now.

As for turbos, I avoid them for heat reasons. Larry is fighting heat issues with MotV8tr. I would think about a Pro Charger. WAY quicker and easier to install. Less money. No heat issue.

For Fuel Injection, we can do a Accel Thruster and put a good base tune in it when your ready. Very home tuner friendly for a advance system.

Thanks for the tip. I was talking with Arizen about some of their seats with the houndstooth material but they are having supply problems with the seats themselves and now the fabric has been discontinued from their supplier as well.

Killer ride and the stance is just right!!

Were you able to get the Magnaflow tailpipes over the axle with the Prodigy setup? I have the Alston G-bar on my second gen and only have dumps because it looks way too tight to fit any tails.

Thanks! With the 2" Hotchkis drop springs in the front, I actually had to jack up the qa-1's almost to the top to get the wheel well edges equal to the top of the tire front to back.

I didn't even bother with the Magnaflow tail pipes since that wasn't the look I was going for.

Not to high jack the post, but we make 2 1/2" tailpipes for G Bars / Prodigy Bars. They do require a notched (Dog Eared) tank.

Here is a video of the orignal mock up set we had reverse engineered. Now they are mandrel bent, 9 bends and 1 cut and weld.

I picked up a set of Lemons Big block headers off a forum with 250 miles on them for a pretty good deal. I had blown a hole in my #4 cylinder header pipe and needed to get new headers anyway so the timing was good. They are a 2 1/4" pipe header with individual pipes and a 4" collector. They were ceramic coated and had O2 bungs for FI or fuel injection when it comes time for that. They fit super tight and some of the clearances are within 1/8". I had to trim my motor mounts for clearance on both sides and remove 1 grease fitting off my suspension to get full lock to lock without contact. No biggy but they are that tight.

Thanks for the feedback. The plan is to switch out the intake manifold for a Weiand dual plane model, so the amount of aluminum color is going to increase from all orange. If I painted the covers and the air cleaner they would be a grey similar to the ceramic coating on the headers or a darker gunmetal to match the wheels.

Ordered some new Arizen Racing seats several weeks ago to replace the stockers. I had them done to match in Ivory vinyl and deluxe houndstooth. I should have them next week and will get some installed photos up. Here are the actual seat pics from Mark at Arizen. Should really help with my sliding issues out of the stock flat bottom units under hard cornering. :)
Also got a set of Eddie Motorsports billet aluminum hood hinges in machined finish. Should help with some slop I have in the original stockers.

Hi Steve,
It was pretty straight forward. Once you bolt in the lower link bars, centre the differential, and set your pinion angle, they pretty much centre themselves. They do need to be welded to your axle tubes.

No problem, the thing I liked about it is that you can always go back if needed. You dont have to cut up the car to install the system and you use all the stock leaf mounting points.

Finally started to pull the car apart for the big color change. I am pretty happy with how solid the car is. Very little rust anywhere, even in the rear quarter lower areas. You can see a lot of the original Garnet Red paint, which is what I think I will be going back to. Here are some pics.

Got the last of the stuff off the car Sunday and Monday nights. I wasn't sure if the 15" corvette rally wheel would fit the back but they cleared the Willwoods by about 1/4" on the caliper. All thats left is put one of the original seats back in and deliver to the body shop next week. :)

Got the car into the shop this morning. Got a call around 4:30pm after they put the wheel to it in a few suspect spots and typical rust areas on these cars. Rear quarters had a ton of brass repair work in them...very bizarre stuff. Roof and trunk were all good with no filler to speak of. The strangest things were on the doors, hood, front fenders, and quarters. It was almost like the last body man was too lazy too align everything. The filler was on the panels and got progressively thicker, the lower you went down the car...on every panel. There was no evidence of damage on the insides of the panels that you could see or feel. When the wheel was put to it, the metal underneath the filler was straight and rust free. The hood was the same...no damage on the underside but about 3/16" thick filler skim coat on the whole hood. It goes tomorrow for media blast to get the rest of the car stripped. I guess we will then see what else is there. :)

A few cell phone pics from the body shop visit today. We were lucky we pulled out the headliner. When they did, a huge mouse nest and 2 dead mumified mouse corpses dropped on the guys. I guess thats what 20 years of storage gets you. Apparently the mouse poison that was in the car worked! :)

The media blaster decided to put a paint meter on car yesterday before he started blasting....just for kicks. Most of the car was around 40 mics. Lower quarters were around 220 mics!! Needless to say he was on his 3rd pass this afternoon and still going.

I think the same thing when I look back at old pics. I am not going to do anything that I can't switch back to stock. The car is a 350hp 396 car (2034 built) so it is a pretty rare piece. I could have mini tubbed and cut the car up but I really didn't want to go to the point of no return. Yes, the car is going back to the original Garnet Red with black hockey sticks. I think with the dark wheels and the white deluxe interior it will have a striking look to it.

Hey Steve I am going to start my quarter swap next week and I am most likely going to have some questions since this will be my first time doing the swap. Won't know to what extent until I strip the paint and remove the quarter, if I need a full quarter, 80%, or just a skin. Not sure about outer, inner and trunk drop off either. Were do you get your sheet metal from?

Thanks

I got all the AMD sheetmetal from Classic Performance in Calgary. I got full quarters from AMD but the trunk drop downs and outer wheel tubs were Goodmark since AMD doesn't have them.

Fitment with the AMD was pretty darn good and the gauge of the steel was good and heavy like OEM.

I have a dilemma of what to do with the original front fenders. They need repairs and patchwork to the lowers and are going to need a bunch of time to do. One needs a new inner brace to be re-worked. The other has a patch on the inside and outside sandwiching the original metal. Looking at an extra $500 per side in labour to remove, re-work, cut and re-weld. I have a feeling though, that number will increase to around $800 per side. I can get new AMD fenders for $450/side. Dilemma is to go aftermarket or save the originals. What to do????

Issues today with unequal length rocker panels. This is the factory original installation. Looks like we are going to have to section a piece out...about 1/4" long.

Hey Gear what is the final project going to look like? Is it going to look like the picture you just posted in stock trim, or do you have other plans in mind. I think for Plane Jane COPO's and sleepers the stock look works, but I am a fan of pretty well any of the stripe options available. I think that the stripes really accent the car and set it off, not to mention gives a much sportier race feel to it. Or are you looking to just make the paint more appealing?

Alignment is great on the passenger side everywhere. Driver side is another story. We are tight at the cowl and wide at the header. We have decided to put the car on a rack and check the subframe alignment and see if the cowl could be off on the drivers side. We could make everything fit with the sub and cowl in their current position but I am not comfortable with that. If the car is apart...do it once...do it right.

Had the frame guy come and look at the cowl but everything seems to be pretty close. Ended up relief cutting and doing some adjustments to the fender mount locations and that has given us a lot more adjustment than the factory ever allowed for, which in turn has helped out the gaps a ton.

Is that an original GM SS hood, or did you use a repro' hood? I had some alignment issues on my car with the repro and ended up buying an original and PAPOW, my alignment issues were solved.

The cowl has a fade over the top onto the firewall so they are going to prime and paint that area separate from the rest.

Hey Gear what paint did you use on the upper dash panel and the rear package tray trim. Not sure what those parts are called. It looks like a matt black. Kind of like trim black.

Not sure what it is, but mine was original and looked like a semi gloss like in the engine bay. The picture above is from the COPO barn find thread. That car is Garnet Red as well, so I grabbed a pic from him that shows what mine is supposed to look like.

Looks amazing gear. I am following just behind you and using your thread as a guide. Let me know how I am doing. Curious about the taping off for seasm sealer. Looks like youy put seam sealer between the quarter and the rear tail panel. Any info on those areas would be appreciated. Also it looks like you had a coat of primer and now a second coat of primer. What did you use? How many coats of each. Also curious if you are using original hood and trunk lid.

Thanks

Good to hear you are progressing as well! With the new quarters, there was a little metal work to get everything lined up perfectly with the original tail panel. The sealer helps to smooth out the joint and give it a nice finished and even look....just like the factory did it. The order of metal prep for paint was Bare metal - sealer- metal fabrication - body work - 2 coats of Slick sand - boarded out - 3 coats of 2K primer - 5 days dry time - board it out again - prep for paint. The only non-original panels I used were the header panel, lower valance, rear quarters, outer wheel tubs, and truck drop downs. Everything else was re-worked original panels.

Put the car up on the hoist prior to final prep to deal with some rocker dents that the car had. While it was up in the air I had the 4 link welded in place. I never was super confident in having the cradle just bolted in place....especially if the car is getting more power.

Thanks 69z. Final prep for paint starts Monday. It will have had over 14 days in final primer to completely dry and shrink. They like to sometimes go closer to a month to get everything dried right out and get all the bodywork and primer completely shrunk before paint.

Hey Steve,
They ran the bead along the outer edges of both tabs and along the edge that runs along the inner frame rail. I didn't want it completely welded into the insides of the frame rails in case it ever needs to come out down the road.

We have paint! I had a couple of colors to choose from since PPG has more than one formulation for Code 52 Garnet Red. One is a brighter red like Regal Red from the mid 60's GM color chart. The other was a deeper red and matched the rear speaker area, dash end, and floor rails that were still in their original factory color. I think the darker Garnet red will be good with the black stripes amd darker wheels.:)

Car is all washed up and clean, in line and ready to go in the booth tomorrow, for paint Friday and dry time over the weekend. Doors and fenders will be re-hung so they can get the stripes laid out, painted, and then have the final 2 coats of clear applied. Doors and fenders currently only have 1 coat of clear.

They will get the panels back on early next week and I should have it back in my shop by the end of next week for final assembly, detailing, and clean up over the next few months. With the sand and gravel they put on our roads in the winter, it's usually the end of May before everything is swept up and the roads are clean enough to enjoy.

What was the darker PPG color Code 52 Garnet Red you ended up using.
I am just looking for a reference color when I get to the color choice stage of my 52 52.

Hey Z,
Black grill was factory on the SS. I believe the COPO's and Z28's had the Argent silver grill. Car is fully running, no mechanical stuff needed. I will drive it onto the flat deck to get it home to my shop and keep working on assembly until the spring.

Yes...that's the way it was done on SS396 cars.

Black-out Paint Applications
Certain first-generation Camaro models had semi-gloss black-out paint applied to the body to influence the appearance. There were two types, a "ground-effect" black-out applied to the rocker-panel/body-sill area for certain exterior trim options, and a blacked-out tailpan applied to SS-396 cars.
Body sill black-out paint was applied to Z22 (RS) cars in 1967 and 1968, and to Z21 (style trim), Z22 (RS), and COPO 9560/9561 cars in 1969. But there were several body colors that were simply just too dark for this paint scheme to be effective, and for these colors (more below) the body sill black-out paint was omitted. Additionally, the body sill black-out was omitted for special models like the 1969 Z11 Indy Pace Car convertible trim package and the 1969 Z10 coupe trim package. A Chevrolet Product Bulletin dated 2-4-69 describes the Z11 (Pace Car trim package) package and includes this instruction: "Body sill to be painted white instead of black." Although no instructions have been found for the Z10 coupe, it would be natural for this same philosophy to have been followed.

There was also a paint color exception for the SS-396 tailpan black-out, but it was limited to black vehicles. In other words, only black (and special models like Z11 and Z10) SS-396 cars did not receive the (semi-gloss) blacked-out tailpans.

I think he was asking if the black paint was supposed to stop at the top of the tail panel or wrap all the way over the trunk lip.

Thanks Gear. Looks like you are going with a white houndstooth interior. Nice choice. I am a huge Black Houndstooth fan. For me the Deluxe houndstooth combo is the only choice.

also love the 4 wheels discs. What system did you go with? I think I already asked about the motor and trans specs. I will have to scroll back and see if it is listed. I think you also posted wheel and tire info as well.

No snow in Vancouver this year. A few flurries but it was gone by the next day. I guess you will have your car on the road by the summer at this rate.

Car originally came with the white houndstooth. Interior is all original except I did pick up a new set of carpet and I have a set of houndstooth Arizen Racing seats I had made last spring. For brakes I have 6 piston Wilwood in the front and 4 piston in the back with the integrated internal parking break set up. Car still has the original 396 with Turbo 400, 12 bolt posi in the back.
Running 18" Fikse's all around 10's on the back with 275's.

Have you picked your brakes and wheels yet?

Hey gear that is going to be a very sweet ride. I am going to stay stock for now until I do the drive train upgrade. Not sure what I wil do for disc brakes just yet, stock or otherwise, and for wheels I think I want the Torque Thrust II's. Not sure on rubber yet, but think I will go 15 inch with a fairly stock looking tire. Perhaps when I see your set up I may change my mind. So far I have not been a huge fan of after market wheels. I am currently sporting 15 inch rallys.

Which shop did the work? Turned out very nice.

Thanks, really happy with the end product......and the car is all steel again and probably 200 lbs lighter!!
To tell you the truth, it has been snowing for a month, so it was now or never. The bodyshop wanted it gone so nobody damaged it while it was there. Once a car gets to this stage they dont want it around anymore.

Even with a posi it was a challenge to get it down my side driveway. With those 17" Corvette spares on the front and the weight of the big block up front, the rears were just turning. Took a few runs but I made it. Due to the -20 temp, the snow didn't even stick to the car.

So I did something a little different with the front bumper. I used a spare steel core and brackets and welded the brackets up to the back of the bumper. This allowed the bumper bolts to be welded in and grown down smooth. It then went to powder coat and then in for a coat of paint. Kind of gives the car the enduro bumper look with the steel strength and durability.

So its been a real battle trying to get anything OER or repo to fit even close to original. A few pieces I have been able to modify to make work but it takes lots of time for each piece. Progress has been frustratingly slow but it is happening.

NOS trunk weather seal...so much different from the rubber OER material....and the trunk actually closes with the NOS stuff. Got the jack and POSI decals installed as well. My original POSI decal was a little off level so I did it the same way.....adds a little character I think. :)

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b245/g356gear/100_4497.jpg

Original door handles and lock cylinders polished up. OER side mirror looks great but fits like *** and needs to be replaced.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b245/g356gear/100_4500.jpg

A set of 20 year old Softseal door rubber seals that fit quite well. The OER ones were over 1/2" off on the mounting points and could not be modified to fit my original doors. Dash all cleaned up from all the body shop dust and re-assembled.

Hey great job gear. I am in the same boat as you with the OER stuff. I had to cut away half of the quarter window seals just to make them fit and they are still way off. It was crazy cause I would get the doors to close perfectly and then add the next layer, from door seals to door panels and on and on, and each time I had to make significant mods to make it work.

Not sure if you have got to the trim yet or if you are going that route, but I have the Z21 option which is all of the chrome exterior trim and it was a nightmare as well. None of the holes for the wheel well chrome lined up, so I had to dremel them all out. The rear louvers didn't fit the factory holes, The rocker spears are made of tinfoil and the extra amount of time spent making it all fit is a lot of work. I am glad that someone else feels my pain just like I feel yours. I plan to find decent used parts at some point and swap out the parts that are sub par.

My soft seal door rubbers were new and actually fit not that badl. They have No metal inserts however and they are pretty poor quality compared to original. I had to modify my trunk seal just to get the trunk to even close. After triming the bottom of the seal it now fits fine.

Antena was a really poor fit. Rear package tray just slipped into to place no mods at all. I also bought a repaint seal kit. All of the gaskets needed to be cut to fit clean. I also got the rubber bumper kit and it is pretty weak. The rubber is much harder than original and does not fit everywhere that great. I kept my old ones and ended up just cleaning them up. I am glad I kept all of my old parts as I ended up restoring as many as I could once I realised how the OER stuff fit.

Your car looks amazing. Can't wait to see it finished. You are really close now. The dash looks brand new. I thought I would have been done longe before now as well, but all of the little things just take so much longer than I thought they would.

Killer car.

Let me know the brand. I did not glue my trunk seal or door seals in yeat as I was waiting to see how things settle in first. I had to modify my trunk seal to close. Hey 69Z. The trunk seal I got locally from a Camaro parts guy who had 1 set left...$120 but I have seen them on Ebay for around $150-200. My trunk closes perfectly. An NOS set of door rubber seals seems to go for $1300-1800 range if you can find them. The dash is original, just wiped it down with some cleaner. A little vinyl or leather condition works well, but don't use anything with silicone in it!! The trans tunnel are the original pads but the floor pieces are new from OER.

Looks like I will pass on the NOS door seals if they are that much. Certain things are worth it. Since I am not doing a real Z there is no point in blowing money needlessly. However the aluminum after market trim parts are not worth it even though they are cheap. The rocker spears are really bad. Rear louvers not too bad. Door sill plates are worthless I found. I am going to try to polish up my originals and see how they turn out. They are really faded and tarnished but solid and dent free.

Maybe June? They just started street cleaning here and there is still lots of sand and gravel on the roads. We just got some rain today to wash down the streets. The city uses sand here in the winter...no salt, so it takes some time and a few good rain showers to get the streets cleaned off properly.

I went over everything with a wire wheel to get all the loose parts off. Then a light scuff over everything else, cleaned it with the proper reducer and then shot it with the etch coat.

Got the rear seat in, original seat belts all cleaned and re-installed. Got the carpets in, sill plates installed, and the basics for the console back in over the last couple of nights.

Really nice project Steve. How much did your paint cost you? I'm told due to the situation in Japan after the earthquake PPG can't get 80 percent of their tints restocked here in the US. The body color and the white with black houndstooth seats are really sharp. Thanks for the update.

Thanks! Original quote with metal work was around 15K. After adding in a few extras, front fender repairs, etc....we are closer to the 20K mark than the 15K mark now.

When I look at the old photos of the car and what was underneath....no regrets at all!

Got the rear suspension all cleaned up after the body shop. Got the rear bumper on, rear rims on and dropped it down to the ride height the car will be at. Almost there!

All 4 wheels on the car tonight after more cleaning. A few more little trim bits, a set of Marquez LED driving/turn signals, and some Anvil carbon fiber bits in a satin finish to finish it all off.

Finally got the original door panels back so I could finish the interior. I also had to do some Dremel mods to the carbon fibre close out panel to get it fitting properly. The front end sheet metal fits a lot differently now than it did before ( actually square now).

Sick car man! Do us all a favor, since its June and all, and take that damn car outside in the sun and snap some photos of that baby sittin on those wheels. Excellent work, nice subtle changes, not too much, not too little...just right!

I took a tip out of another forum thread and used red scotch brite on the valve covers and air cleaner and then sealed them up with Wizard's metal sealer. Worked great and cleaned up a lot of the scratches that would not polish out completely. I also decided to go away from the chrome trim ring around the headlights and just stay with the single polished ring that holds the headlight bulb in place. Everything else around the headlights would be black. I think it gives it a cleaner look and goes with the theme a little better.
