View Full Version : Project "TQMNSTR"...69 Camaro
g356gear May 7th, 09, 03:27 PM Finally got out to the storage location of the Camaro I picked up in November last fall. The car was originally fully restored in 1989 with a full sub-frame off, interior refresh and re-paint. Originally the car was a 350hp 396 SS. Engine is original heads and intake, but block was replaced with a punched out 454 for driving purposes and the original block is being stored. Z/28 stripes were added in the late 70's and were kept when it was repainted in 1989. Car only has 250 miles since 89. Everything looked really good except a small scrape on the driver rear quarter that happened when it was being moved several years ago. We pulled out the old fuel from the tank, and filled her up with new juice. All the plugs, points, and condenser were replaced because we weren't getting any spark. After that, the car started right up and we ran it for 20min and everything looked good, no leaks at all. All that is left is to go through the brakes, steering, and safety equipment and make sure she is road ready. It's a little dirty from sitting under a cover and has not been washed in the last 20years. It's only been around the block a few times since 89 to blow off the dust. Once I get it home, the Willwood brakes, Prodigy Bar 4-link, sway bars, Hotchkis parts, and Fikse wheels will go on the car. Here are a few pics from yesterday.

g356gear May 9th, 09, 08:41 AM Prodigy 4-link and the Fikse's mounted up and ready to go. :) Just waiting on the coil-overs and everything should be good to go.

g356gear May 18th, 09, 02:59 PM Fikse's test fit today. Looks like the 2" drop all around will put the top of the tire flush to the chrome wheel moulding.....perfect. :)
This is a 10" rear rim width and gives about 1/2" clearance on the shock body with stock rear suspension.

Pro-Street69Camaro468 Jun 23rd, 09, 06:15 PM Nice looking car like the color too.I realy liked the look with the Rallies but I guess I'm old school.
g356gear Jun 28th, 09, 11:55 AM Got the Magnaflow system installed yesterday. Dual exhaust with a true-X pipe and 2.5" stainless pipes. I just have to add the turn down dumps and it will be all done.

g356gear Jun 29th, 09, 07:25 PM Checked my rear clearances today.......boy was I glad I spent a bunch of time centering the differential perfectly.
3/8" clearance on each side. Rims are 18x10, 2" lowering, tire is a 275/35/18

Motown 454 Jun 29th, 09, 07:30 PM I'll say you did a nice job centering it. Looks Good
Chevy1 Jul 1st, 09, 06:48 PM Nice work, beautiful Camaro, keep the pics coming...
keypilot Jul 2nd, 09, 09:14 AM great looking car and nice job, but is that going to be enough clearance? there has got to be some body roll, no?
g356gear Jul 3rd, 09, 08:30 PM I am looking at putting a 1/4" spacer in if I have the clearance on the outside. I am still waiting for the currect lower bushings for the coil-overs so once they are in I can set the ride height perfectly and see where I stand.
DOUG G Jul 4th, 09, 05:43 AM Looks good so far.... :beers:
g356gear Jul 12th, 09, 01:23 PM Finally got the car back on the ground today after getting brakes bled, rough alignment done, and all the bolts checked. I had to set the coilovers at the top to get the equal ride height with the 2" front drop Hotchkis springs. Pretty happy with everything. Lot's of delays waiting for bushings and getting custom braided brake lines done but at least it is finished.

g356gear Jul 17th, 09, 03:02 PM Got the car into the alignment shop today. Everything was pretty close on the laser machine. I was out about a 1/4" on the rear with the alignment and about the same on the front. It needed a good amount of shimming to get the cars camber/castor sorted out but it drives pretty nice now. The prodigy bar seems to be pretty good riding compared to the stock leafs. Much stiffer and more planted ride than before. My stock seats I think are going to be an issue with hard cornering. I already feel myself bracing against the door panel and console.
Camaro2nv Jul 17th, 09, 04:23 PM Car looks bad arse! Cool mods!
g356gear Aug 10th, 09, 07:24 PM Went for a drive the other day and broke a rocker. Luckily I got the car shut off before it did any damage or came apart.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b245/g356gear/RockerFailure004.jpg
Pulled everything apart and found a bent pushrod and an oiling problem from another.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b245/g356gear/Valves003.jpg
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b245/g356gear/Valves001.jpg
So I picked up a set of Comp Magnum Roller Rockers, new 3/8" pushrods and guide plates.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b245/g356gear/RollerRockers001.jpg
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b245/g356gear/RollerRockers002.jpg
With the taller rockers, I then had to change to a taller valve cover, and went to a fabricated aluminum unit.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b245/g356gear/RollerRockers005.jpg
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b245/g356gear/RollerRockers004.jpg
They don't seem to take power brake boosters into account with these, so a little cut and re-welding and everything clears OK.

Well...first thing to go would the crappy headers currently on the car.
I am really looking at switching over to FI or even a twin turbo set-up if the finances permit. If I decide to go that direction, the headers will not be needed.

Keep us posted.
mk1aintnomark Aug 27th, 09, 03:49 PM Wow nice ride. What's the story with the turquoise '64?
ProdigyCustoms Aug 27th, 09, 04:14 PM First time I have seen it Steve. Sits fantastic! Very aggresive attitude now.
As for turbos, I avoid them for heat reasons. Larry is fighting heat issues with MotV8tr. I would think about a Pro Charger. WAY quicker and easier to install. Less money. No heat issue.
For Fuel Injection, we can do a Accel Thruster and put a good base tune in it when your ready. Very home tuner friendly for a advance system.
68z28sd Aug 28th, 09, 03:38 PM hey frank. jason from south dakota here. i just started painting the mustang today. for those who do not know it is all gm power train. it starts runs and drives great, a little stiff but it has no roof or interior, or glass i figure 800 lbs. i assume that will help the ride what do you think?

That car is a 97% original SS327 convertible ordered new for his mom. 60,000 miles, original everything except tires and some wear items.

Hey, I think you may be able to get covers for 4th gen seats that match your interior. I thought I saw white/houndstooth in one of the catalogs.

Thanks for the tip. I was talking with Arizen about some of their seats with the houndstooth material but they are having supply problems with the seats themselves and now the fabric has been discontinued from their supplier as well.

bowtie1Z28 Sep 7th, 09, 10:32 AM Killer ride and the stance is just right!!
Were you able to get the Magnaflow tailpipes over the axle with the Prodigy setup? I have the Alston G-bar on my second gen and only have dumps because it looks way too tight to fit any tails.

Thanks! With the 2" Hotchkis drop springs in the front, I actually had to jack up the qa-1's almost to the top to get the wheel well edges equal to the top of the tire front to back.
I didn't even bother with the Magnaflow tail pipes since that wasn't the look I was going for.

68z28sd Sep 8th, 09, 03:52 PM i have the prodigy g-bar on the mustang, my exhaust guy snaked them in there beatifully. i would like to post some pics of this car on the site. if some one could help me with that i would appreciate it, i could e-mail them to who ever i can't seem to figure out how to do it myself.
ProdigyCustoms Sep 8th, 09, 06:13 PM Not to high jack the post, but we make 2 1/2" tailpipes for G Bars / Prodigy Bars. They do require a notched (Dog Eared) tank.
Here is a video of the orignal mock up set we had reverse engineered. Now they are mandrel bent, 9 bends and 1 cut and weld.

g356gear Sep 20th, 09, 08:24 PM I picked up a set of Lemons Big block headers off a forum with 250 miles on them for a pretty good deal. I had blown a hole in my #4 cylinder header pipe and needed to get new headers anyway so the timing was good. They are a 2 1/4" pipe header with individual pipes and a 4" collector. They were ceramic coated and had O2 bungs for FI or fuel injection when it comes time for that. They fit super tight and some of the clearances are within 1/8". I had to trim my motor mounts for clearance on both sides and remove 1 grease fitting off my suspension to get full lock to lock without contact. No biggy but they are that tight.

g356gear Dec 20th, 09, 12:11 PM I finally got the new air cleaner and new plug wires in to work with the Lemons headers. Still not sure if I want to paint the valve covers and air cleaner or leave them in natural aluminum finish.

BA. Dec 20th, 09, 05:33 PM I like the raw alum. look as you have it there. Looks cool. I think painting them might be some color overkill.

Thanks for the feedback. The plan is to switch out the intake manifold for a Weiand dual plane model, so the amount of aluminum color is going to increase from all orange. If I painted the covers and the air cleaner they would be a grey similar to the ceramic coating on the headers or a darker gunmetal to match the wheels.
UNEZRYDR Dec 21st, 09, 03:53 PM Looks like a real nice ride! Great job.
