View Full Version : She's on the road! - 69 Camaro Vert - Jersey Blue Claw
rob07002 May 13th, 09, 10:58 AM Well I got to do what I've only been dreaming of for the past 2 years.... Drive the car!!!
Initial impressions are fantastic! It does everything I thought it would and more. All the parts really seem to compliment each other and with some adjustment, debugging, and seat time, I doubt you'll be able to wipe the smile off my face.
Now, I only have about 20+ miles of test time on some wonderful Jersey roads, but I am very happy with ride quality, handling, braking, engine responsiveness, and power.
Still have some minor things to work on like getting the hood painted, but she's a driver and want to thank some friends for all their help.

djbartu May 14th, 09, 05:12 PM Awesome! I also drove my convertible (with the new motor/5 speed) for the first time a few weeks ago. And, once the bugs were worked out, I was pretty thrilled too, and still am. I still have a lot of work to do to finish all the projects in my mind, but at least I can enjoy the car this summer. I'm working on a much smaller budget, so my car will not be quite the build you are doing.
I was wondering if you could answer a few questions on your roll bar. I assume you have a 4 point ... is that custom made, or installed (modified?) from a kit? I couldn't tell too much from the photos but is the whole rear seat still usable? I realize you mini tubbed your car, so mounting points are going to be different in my application. I hope to go with a 6 point, or something with a sidebar. Safety is my main concern, as I plan to drive my car a lot, with my family (I am currently in the process on mounting 3 point seat belts in the rear seat).
Once again, very, very nice!
Below are two pics of my progress.

Sweet ride! Very nice looking engine compartment.
The roll bar is a custom 4pt, so no kit was used, but I hear nice things of the DSE bar, but not sure if you can use in your vert. If you want a bar that is truly functional and least obtrusive, I reccommend going custom as it's the only way to get a nice fitting bar.
One thing that you should consider is putting people in a rollbar equiped car without proper harnesses, and usually not reccommeded putting passengers in the back even with belts since the bar (main hoop and/or cross bar) can become a hazzard if in an impact where the person's head could impact the bar. It's been a subject of many discussions on here and other sites like pro-touring.com and latergal-g.net.
You mention wanting to put your family in the car and would hate to see something terrible happen beacuse of rollbar trauma.
Just some food for thought.

Thanks Jeff. Yeah, there was no way the SS hood was fitting with the intake I'm running. Even the 2" cowl hood is tight and I'm giving a drop base air cleaner one last shot before I go an d fab something custom.
BTW the Repro SS hood, complete with louvers and insullation and painted LeMans blue is for sale locally.
Thanks again.

Thanks for the info. I don't mean to change the topic of this post, but since we're on the roll bar subject I would just like to ask one more question. Wouldn't the three point belts (with shoulder restraints) I'm installing in the rear help to negate the possibility of a rear seat passenger's head coming forward and contacting the roll bar? I know no one can predict exactly what would happen in an accident, but I do believe rear three point belts will be a great improvement over lap belts.

Yes, that should reduce the chance of head injury greatly but what about the rear down bars? Unless you run them low, they'll be close to head height and a 3 point won't prevent lateral movement. Not trying to piss you off, but just consider cons of a bar.
I went through the same decision, but ultimately chose to put a bar in it given the purposes of the car and extreme rarity that I'll have someone in the back seat.
djbartu May 15th, 09, 04:34 PM Not trying to piss you off, but
Piss me off? Not at all. I appreciate every opinion, that's why I ask someone who has done something before for their experiences. To me, that's the best part of these forums. The info is invaluable. With my work schedule and family, I really don't have a lot of time to hang out at all of the shows talking to other car owners. The internet, Team Camaro in particular, is my main source of information and inspiration! Thanks for the help. And, to tell you the truth, I really don't want to install a roll bar (a lot of extra cost and work), I just want the safest vehicle possible. Like I said before, No one can ever predict when or how an accident will occur. Just last weekend, about 10 miles from me, there was a tragic accident involving a restored Nova waiting to turn into a local car show. It was rear ended by an SUV and the Nova burst into flames. That news video (a camera crew was on the scene filmiing the car show) haunts me every time I think about taking my family in my Camaro and I wonder if there's really any way to be truely safe. Anyway, sorry for sharing that unfortunate story, but I do respect everyone's input, as well as everyone's taste in how they build their own project vehicles.
Car nut May 15th, 09, 06:02 PM Both cars are nice. How is that stainless tank? Brian.

I do feel safer with having the bar in it, so I think you'll be ok with the 3 points.
