Has anyone made their own (pics) and how was it made ?
I've been quoted $150 (I know it will look great) but it's outta my budget.

We make them all the time. I recomend a qualified sign shop or a pinstriper.

What about designing your own and then printing it large format at Kinko's. Just make sure the fonts don't get blurry as the piece is enlarged? You could do it in Word.

You could surely make a decent sign for less than $50. I guess it all depends on what you want. Go to your nearest plastics store and buy a piece of material. Hit a scrapbook or craft store and buy the letters you want in any style and color. Stencils also work well just be a little creative. Nothing wrong with paying someone to make it but, if you don't want to spend $150, why not try doing it yourself. It will probably take a couple hours once you have the plan drawn up. As you can see that's why it will cost you $150 to have one made. Your time is free to you.

Thats not a bad idea. I have a sign shop that does vinyl letters (signs) and the usual Calvin peeing and such grafix.... Now I'm thinking...hhhhhmmmmm.

Doug - if you have a photo editing / graphic's program or even MS Power Point you can make your own for very little cash. After you have created a graphic page and converted it to a file type you can upload to a photo web site then you use their printing service. Using Fototime.com I can buy a print up to 30" x 40" with a 2000x3000 pixel picture for about $30 and a 20" x 30" print would cost about $17

Once you have the print you can mount it on foam poster board or put it in a frame. Start with a good background pic and add the text info and you can have just as nice a sign board as the high dollar ones...

Good question... dpi (dots per inch) is printer talk for ink placed on paper. Pixels are digital versions of dots used to measure a monitors display and by cameras to record pictures and they reference display or picture size. For example my camera resolution is about 6 megapixel (3008 x 2000 = 6,016,000 pixels) with a maxium display of 3008 x 2000 @ 72 ppi (pixels per inch). If you do the math dividing 72 into 3008 and 2000 you get 41.7" x 27.7" and that is where Fototime and my Paint Shop Pro says I can print 30"x40".

The thing is to get that 40x30 size you are printing at 72ppi and the professional printing standard is 300ppi. At the pro standard the largest prints I should be making is 6.6" x 10". I haven't had a 3000x2000 @72 ppi resolution picture printed at 40"x30" but have had smaller 800x600 @ 72 ppi shots printed at 8x10 and 8.5x11 with great results. By the pro standard those 800x600 shots would only make 2.6"x2" pictures.

Sorry for such a long answer but if the pro sign board maker uses the digital pic's you supply he's limited to the same printing sizes and resolutions (ppi) you are.

The only showboard you need is one that "shows" your ET and MPH........showboard.....

We have a wide format printer/plotter in the data center at work that can print as large as 34 x 44 ---- every once in a while I have one of my staff run a "printer test" to make sure the ink doesn't dry out in the printer  -- of course there has to a test picture to print ;) -- did I mention that first gen Camaros make a very good subject material for this particular print test? :D
