View Full Version : 3.875 stoke crank... 396 SBC
69ProTouring Jul 16th, 02, 11:48 AM Anyone using one of these? I'm seeing them in the magazines, but I don't know anyone personally that is using that setup. .030 over 350 block and 3.875 stoke = 396 CID. I think it would have great torque. What do you think?

LarryC5 Jul 17th, 02, 05:52 AM I have a 396 small block stroker. The DD2K had it well over 500hp and just over 500 ft lbs of torque. The combination I put together was:
AFR heads 210's fully ported
Comp Hyd. Roller Cam
JE 10.1 pistons
Eagle 6" Rods
Cola 4340 crank, all internally balanced.
Victor jr. Intake
Bill Mitchell 850DP
Hooker Super Comp Headers
Crane Gold Race Roller Rockers
Stef's alumin oil pan with windage tray and baffel
etc...
The motor ran really good. The popularity of this motor combination apparently was due to the lack of available 400 production blocks in the scrap yards. If you go this way, you will not be disappointed. I did use a late model roller cam block for this engine.

pdq67 Jul 17th, 02, 08:13 AM Just think if you had a pair of "splayed valve, mini-big block" heads on it, you would have a small BB!!
He, He!! pdq67
Eric68 Jul 17th, 02, 03:03 PM I would think that you wouldn't have a lot of piston choices with the odd stroke.
Why not just go with an aftermarket tall deck 4.155 bore block and a 4" crank? http://www.camaros.net/forum/wink.gif That would get you a small block 427!
Now all you need is a pair of SB2.2 splayed valve heads for that small-big block combo PDQ is talking about. http://www.camaros.net/forum/cool.gif
Wait! You can bore one of those Dart blocks to 4.25" I'm pretty sure. http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif That would get you a 454" small block! But now we're talking about "cubic money"! LOL
pdq67 Jul 17th, 02, 03:25 PM He, He!!! Oh, the "more power, Scotty" bug is flying around our site!!! LOL. pdq67

CamaroNOTcamero Jul 17th, 02, 05:24 PM Nah, lets all start building pro stocks!!!
Lets put some titanium rods in this engine too!
LarryC5 Jul 18th, 02, 05:52 AM What about the titanium crank http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif
boodlefoof Jul 18th, 02, 06:05 AM I think you mean unobtanium Larry! http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif
There is one crate motor company that I know of making these little monsters... www.amerspeed.com (http://www.amerspeed.com) Give them a call and they might be able to give you an idea of the extra work involved in putting in the bigger stroke crank.
Eric68 Jul 18th, 02, 03:27 PM I'd have to add dual chrome racing dipsticks just to keep up with a titanium crank engine. Might have to chop and channel the sun-visors too. LOL
69ProTouring Jul 18th, 02, 03:55 PM Ya know, this is why this is my favorite website. http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif I was just reading about that 396 in magazines, and I know Nelson Racing Engines has that combo available in a crate form, too.

gheatly Jul 19th, 02, 06:19 AM Build the 396 and get a set of SB2 small block heads. You can get a fully ported set used from a company in North Carolina that sells parts from NASCAR teams.
