The car was originally factory A/C equipped. When I got it the car was only a shell but had the heater box and heater control still in it, but nothing on the firewall. I have installed an American Grafitti cover and heater core and the heater box. Just purchased a reconditioned heater control for an A/C car. I have also installed a new blower motor. The previous owner cut the plugs off the wiring to the heater control. There is a switch on the top of the heater control that actuates when the door on the heater box opens. I have no relays or resistors and don't have a clue as to what is needed. What else am I going to need to purchase to make the heater work?

I am also surprised that nobody answered. Must be the time of year..everyone is busy or out in their car. Anyway... you may want to try AAW, American Autowire as they may be able to help. Email them at

I myself have a '69 and I don't know if the heater boxes are alike or not. Do you still have the heater core ? The door's are controlled by cables, and all you should need is the fan switch. You can download the intstructions to Install an a/c from Vintage Air and that should help you.

I have viewed it a couple times because I want to know the answer also. I have thought about it because I have a non working AC and am considering replacing it with the same box.
Do you have the AC wiring harness?, that and a wiring diagram would help alot.
There needs to be wiring to the motor, speed resistors, and switch on the dash controller.
You will need to install the resistors in the airflow path, if your using the AC wiring, put it in the new American Grafitti engine compartment cover, thats where the factory AC ones are. You don't need the relay because there is no compressor, but the blower wiring runs through it so you need to jump it out. You don't need the thermal cut off switch.
The flaps in the heater box are controlled by mechanical cables, you need those.
The AC only flaps in the cowl and kick panel are vacuum actuated and you can just set those for fresh air and not connect them.
Does that help get you started?
Please post an answer when you get it figured out!

Thanks. I have a bit of research on this and I think that I have it figured out.
I have the original A/C heater box and have installed an American Grafitti cover and blower motor in the engine bay. I have just received an A/C harness (AAW brand) and have purchased a rebuilt heater control for A/C cars. I already have the cables that were on the car, along with the diverter door switch.
I believe that if I mount the A/C resistor in the American Grafitti cover, so it will be cooled by the air blowing over it, and mount the A/C relay on the firewall and hook up the A/C harness, it should work.
I have kick panels for a non-A/C car and I am not going to put the vacuum actuator in, don't have one anyway.
I was wanting to leave this in such a condition that I could install factory air at a later time.
Right now the heater box is getting a new coat of paint and I am waiting on a defroster duct. If you have ever tried to install a defroster duct, you know that it has to go in before anything else under the dash.
BTW, does anyone know if a heater reseal kit is available for and A/C heater box? All of the ones that I have seen state "for non A/C onlyy".
I should have all of this installed within a week or two and will post a follow up.

After giving this much thought, I am considering putting the factory air setup back. I know it will be expensive and I am wondering how much it would add to the value of the car if it was put back to original factory air.
