: How much can YOU stuff under a cowl.....
NHRA1877 Aug 25th, 03, 03:04 PM Well im really looking into hoods now. Heres the deal. Over the winter im getting a RPM airgap intake and a speed demon carb. I also have a MOROSO Air cleaner. I want to get a GoodMark cowl hood, but im not sure if all of that will fit under the hood. I also think a 4in, is a little too big for what i want. Is there any company that makes a 3in hood? or will all the stuff fit under the Factory cowl hood?
DonCasanova Aug 25th, 03, 04:37 PM With a Holley Strip Dominator intake(probably taller than Air Gap), 1" spacer, 800 DP, Summit 14" drop-base air cleaner with 3" element on my big block, the factory cowl hood just makes it on my '69. You can see the top half of the air cleaner thru the cowl when you drive. Hope this helps.......DC
Novaguy73 Aug 26th, 03, 09:41 AM Well concidering my nova is the same chassis and such, i can fit my small block, a weaind team G intake with the cast in 2 " riser, plus another 2" spacer and my holley 800DP then my 14"x5" K/N air filter. Under my 4 3/4 inch cowl. So maybe you can do some math off that. Good luck
NHRA1877 Aug 26th, 03, 09:47 AM got any pics of the car with that cowl? Theres alot of spare room im guessing right?
BBCamaro Aug 26th, 03, 10:38 AM nhra, harwood makes a 3 inch cowl that is very very nice, and fits almost perfect, also check out vfn they make nice products and probaly offer a 3in ch cowl, that is what i am going to get once i am ready goodluck

WillS Aug 26th, 03, 12:15 PM I am not sure anyone is intrested in doing this, but I will ask. Can someone with a stock steel cowl hood actualy measure the distance from the center-line of the bolt hole for the motor mount to the underside of the hood (directly above carb). I too have a potential hood clearance problem, and wonder if the cowl hood would sole it.
Silver69Camaro Aug 26th, 03, 01:48 PM If it's any help, I have a small block with a Performer RPM, Road Demon, and a 4" K&N filter with the 1+" drop base all under a stock SS hood (same height as plane jane hood).
Joe 69 Aug 26th, 03, 04:17 PM Hey NHRA,
I just went through this. I have a 502 with an air gap manifold 950race Holley carb. I went with the Good Mark 2" cowl hood. No problems. I used a air clearner with a 9/16 rise in the base plate and a K&N 2 1/4 air filter with room to spare. You should have no problem. graemlins/thumbsup.gif I will have the car in Somerville Friday night if you want to look at my set up. Thanks, Joe
NHRA1877 Aug 26th, 03, 05:18 PM thanks alot guys, looks like i will be fine. I like the look of the stock cowl, and i think that on a street car a 4 in is too gaudy, so im going with the goodmark hood. Eventually i would like to get my hands on a harwood 3in, but i`ll go with the stock for now, thanks alot guys.
Yellow68SS Aug 26th, 03, 06:15 PM I have a 4 inch on my car and thought it was going to be too big and i could have gotten away with the stock cowl hood. That was until i found out my hood would not shut with a 1 inch spacer on top of my Team G without a drop base air cleaner and with out the spacer it was just about to touch. I could actually push the middle of the hood and touch the aircleaner but if you are running a dual plane i would think you would have no problems.
MarkM Aug 27th, 03, 04:07 AM 468. Steal hood, 2" cowl. Air Gap intake, Edelbrock carb, 4" air cleaner on a 1" drop base. With about 3/4" room left for a spacer smile.gif . To the eye, it doesn't look like it will fit, but it does.

Geese AL are we going to allow these admissions of theft to be posted???
MarkM Aug 28th, 03, 04:35 AM Yep. Freebie!
No, I hate typing on a laptop. I make some many mistakes on this thing.
cavemanmoron Aug 30th, 03, 03:09 AM 427 big block
solid motor mounts
GM 1969 Cowl induction hood
Edlebrock performer manifold
Holley 859 d/p
edelbrock air cleaner
4 inch k&n
The wing nut leaves a mark under the flat plate inside the hood.
I can see the top of the filter when driving,if
the sun is behind me. smile.gif graemlins/beers.gif
Joe G Aug 30th, 03, 03:27 PM There is a lot of room under the stock cowl hood. Just be aware that the stock cowl hood air cleaner and cowl seal require a lower manifold. When I put the stock set up o my 396 with Performer, Holley and 1" spacer, the seal hit the hood. I had to take off the spacer. When I had the 14" open element filter on it, I had plenty of room.
