View Full Version : Front Coil Springs
tim68rsss May 16th, 09, 07:37 PM SB coil springs, left front sets lower than the right front by about 3/4" and tire rubs. Can spacers be added or should I replace the springs. Car has stock suspension.
Just thought of this, car is a ground up restoration and haven't had the front end aligned yet. Today was first day on the road, that part was satisfying:) Would an alignment issue cause this?
go2fast May 16th, 09, 09:45 PM They may not have been installed right. If they are, they should be replaced.

Jim's right. Take out the spring that is lower. If you feel on the lower control arm there is an indentation where the end of the spring hits. Same for the upper portion of the spring. If it's still lower than the other side, like Jim said you'll have to replace the springs.
69Rook May 17th, 09, 12:05 AM Yep, Thats what happened to me. I did nt know that the springs had to be set into the lower a-arm just right (at that knotch) - had to get a spring compresser and spin the spring into place.
But that may not be the problem if the lower side is rubbing on the tire.
The spring not sitting right would be why it may be higher on one side.
tim68rsss May 17th, 09, 07:54 AM I'll double check that the springs are in the notches, but I think they are. If so, any suggestions on which springs to buy and who would have the best deal? This is a 69 Nova SS with stock suspension. Car did sit for 20 years with no motor in it, springs could've lost their strength.
69Rook May 19th, 09, 03:41 AM I got the Eibach 1" drop springs. Good price and recommended on the forums. Car is not running yet so I cant tell you how they perform.
Hotchkis is also good but priced a bit high.
SPARKY69 May 19th, 09, 04:52 AM Start over again, pull them out and put them side by side ,if they are different, but a new set!!
Sauron67MM May 19th, 09, 05:10 AM The top end of the spring is to be seated properly in the frame pocket. Many people locate the bottom end of the spring at the hole in the lower control arm pocket, which is a common mistake; the hole is only for water drainage.
Upper and lower control arm bushing bolts should be tightened while the car is on it's feet, not hanging in the air.
tim68rsss May 20th, 09, 06:11 AM Plan on checking to see if they are installed per Sauron67MM comments and if not pull them to check the height. Worth while to check spring tension? If so, what should a stock set be?
A set of springs aren't very much, I believe Advance Auto carries the TRW brand for less that $70.
Three504spd Aug 3rd, 09, 06:38 PM Along this line of questioning, my passenger side coil/control arm is making a loud metal to metal sound. Now set me straight, compress coil, set the coil against upper control arm "stop" first or locate the lower control arm "stop" first and set the coil in there? This noise is making me insane it's only the passenger side, I pulled the sway bar thinking it was hitting the subframe bumper but the noise is still the same. HELP! loosing patience & hate to drag it to the shop to have them fix it extra $$$ not needing to be spent. Thanks.
p.s.- The noise is loudest when gently "bouncing" the front end of the car & is less if not heard when really "bouncing" or lifting on the front end.

It really would have been better to start a new thread than bring up an old almost related one, but anyways.
To get the spring is in right:
You want the upper end of the spring set so the end of it lines up with a small hole you can see from above (near upper a-arm mount)
Lower end simply needs to fall into the grove in the control arm, not necessarily having the end at the deepest part (near the drainage hole), just where ever the end lands with the top in correctly.
To find the noise: I would recommend having the front tires up on ramps. Have someone else carefully bounce the car and try and actually locate the noise before trying any repairs. Just make sure the car is not going to fall on you.
