Could someone explain to me the difference between torque and HP. I think I have a pretty good idea, but I'm not sure, so if someone could get my mind right on this, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks, Sundy191

I will try
Torque is a measurement of twisting force, i.e. lb-ft or ft-lb. Horsepower is a calculated relationship between torque and rpm.
HP = T x rpm/5252 (or something like it). This is why t and hp values on the curves or graphs always equal each other and cross at 5252rpm.
Usually a torque engine is designed or built to operate below 5252rpm and a horsepower engine above. Actually all that is happening is that the cam timing events are picked to favor torque production either below 5252rpm or above it. Thats why you gain hp upstairs and lose t downstairs or vise versa. Help me out here guys for more info if needed or desired. pdq67
PS. Check out the post I made on big blocks with short strokes. This stuff is getting hashed over quite well.

Simply stated, torque makes acceleration and horsepower makes speed. For a street-driven car, I prefer favoring torque - that's what launches you. Big power at 7000 rpm doesn't do you much good on the street.

thanks folks,i kind of thought it was torque that slams you into the backseat at launch & horsepower that creates high speed.thanks again for all the input.sundy191

OK here's a question for you 1/4 mile guys.... if torque is acceleration, then is it best to shift at the rpm that torque drops off for quickest times?????

With a well designed engine you should shift at the max HP RPM and the RPM should drop down to the Max torque mark.
