I have a Crane solid roller p/n 168601, what material should my dist. gear be? I have the stock MSD 85551 iron gear on there right now.

What does Crane recommend? Was there any lititure with the cam?

Bingo http://www.prager-gmbh.de/CraneCams/CraneCatalog/Page362-367.pdf Crane is known for press on cast gears on their rollers. I have one as well. You can use a standard gear or melonized. I run the melonized to be safe. No brass gear is required for this cam and I would firmly recommend against it.
